I gave the directions to Drake as he drove me to Carl’s house, which was at least a thirty-minute drive. It was quiet for a few minutes when he asked me, “Are you happy, Laria?”
That question caught me off guard. “I am happy my sister is responding to treatment if that is what you are asking?”
“In your relationship. I couldn’t help but notice your reaction to what your mother asked.” He said as he glanced at me before looking back at the road.
“I…uh.” How do I answer him? I am not happy in my relationship. Who would be happy getting abused and beaten up?
“Please don’t lie to me. I know we don’t know each other that well, but I can’t help but care for you as a friend.”
He did sound like he cared. How long has it been since someone has cared for me? Too long.
