ASTRA
The guards were rotating for new shifts and I knew that I had to get a move on. Time was of the essence.
I snuck behind tree trucks, battle armor, and shields until I got to the entrance of the prison.
The guards there had been friend of Athena before this mess set in years ago. As per our agreement, if I could successfully sneak past the guards and get to the gates without being caught, he was going to let me in for about an hour or two.
This was also subject to whoever was the supervisor on duty or who was visiting at the time.
I bowed in greeting as the gates creaked open and I walked in.
Mum was shivering today. It was bad, worse than last night.
I quickly set down my bag and began to pull out the medicine I was able to steal from Dad's drawer. They were labeled as painkillers, but I had one of the healers who used to babysit me check them out.
Being a sixteen-year-old in the middle of all of this was quite a task. But Athena was no longer here. I wasn't even sure she had survived that dastardly assignment that Alpha Enzo had sent her on.
Moon goddess, when you bless me with a mate, may he not be anything like my father or Alpha Enzo. They both deserve the karma that is coming to them.
“Mum, it's me, Astra. Let me help you up. I have brought you some meds and some soup. Here, let's get these into you," I said to my mom as I helped her to sit up. She began coughing violently, and I held her until she doubled over and coughed up some blood.
Tears filled my eyes as I watched her suffer in silence.
When the sickness started, I ran to my dad expecting that he would at least do something for the mother of his children. He had slapped me across the face and threatened to send me to a juvenile hearing for consorting with a criminal.
Alpha Enzo was obviously not going to help, and Ginny? That witch! She was rather going to pour battery acid down my mom's throat in person than to help her.
I held her until her breathing became normal before I rummaged for a bottle of water and the pills. Tomorrow I will see about getting something for the cough. The healer would hopefully help me, at least for old times' sake.
My mom grabbed my hand, and I turned to look at her, completely ignoring the tears streaming down my face.
“My miracle baby!" My mom said to me in a cracked voice. I burst out crying. Whenever she told this tale, as I'm quite sure she was about to tell, it always felt like she was talking about another man and not the bastard that I had come to know as my father.
“Mom, stop, please!" I said to her as I sobbed.
“Shhh, it's okay. It was never your fault to begin with. I lacked what was required to keep the man I fell in love with, and in the end you paid for it. Things weren't going pretty well for us, but it wasn't as bad as requiring a mistress who shamelessly carried his child even though I was still alive and breathing. Seeing that I wasn't a troublesome woman, the pack turned the other cheek, hoping that whoever she birthed would be his heir."
"He had no rank in this pack until recently, so I didn't know what the fuss about an heir was about. My sweet Athena was only two when she gave birth to that accursed child!” My mother began to cough violently.
This version of the story was pretty new to me, so I paid attention to her. I handed her my handkerchief and a bottle of water after she had settled down.
" Thank you. When she gave birth to that witch and died in the process of delivery, I thanked the goddess that neither I nor Athena were anywhere around her, or we would have been labeled her murderers. Yes, your father is quite unhinged. Then things got worse as I was forced to care for the brat. As soon as she was able to recognize her father, I watched Azul do everything that I begged him to do for Athena." She let out a deep sigh and continued.
"After a couple of years, he suddenly stumbled into my bedroom. He wasn't quite drunk, just tipsy. We had s*x for the first time in forever, and then you were conceived. My miracle baby. I thought things would be different, but I suffered a worse injustice. I watched that bastard prioritize his bastard over his children. But Athena was totally in love with you, and she took great care of you. You are loved, treasured, and the price!” My mother said to me and began to cough violently again. But I couldn't help her because the guard had come to tell me that my time was up.
I tried to beg him, but he carried me out of the prison.
“Please! At least let the authorities know that her condition is bad! Please! She needs help!" I screamed and begged him to help my mother.
"You know that this is beyond me! You have to leave right now, Alpha Enzo is on his way here!” The guard said to me and I felt my blood run cold.
Alpha Enzo couldn't catch me here. I will never be able to see my mother again.
I stayed quiet until I was taken out of the prison.
“Run in that direction, you will find yourself at the back of the pack barn. You're on your own from here," he said to me, and I took off without a second thought.
It was when I got to the barn that I realized that I had left everything that I had carried with me to the prison earlier.
