CHAPTER 17

1055 Words
VEYLANA It was way into the night when I finally went home because nobody was going to take care of Athena the way I would. And the hospital staff didn't want to get on Zephyr's nerves again by not taking care of my mate. My mate! I just made peace with dying single, and then he showed up. They finally made his wolf yield control, and he shifted into his human form. Realization dawned on me as I examined his back. He had the mark of an Omega. My mate was an Omega wolf, a very rare breed of male, and I was blessed with one. Well, the goddess knew what she was doing because I was going to protect him with every breath that I had, and I was going to kill anyone who dared to get in between us. I gently pushed the door into the room where Athena was supposed to be sleeping in, and I gasped as I found her sitting up in bed with her head in her hands. She turned in my direction when I gasped and tried to get out of bed. “Are you insane?! Stay right there! I have to call Zephyr!" I said to her and quickly put a call across to Zephyr, completely ignoring her panicked expression. I didn't need to say anything to Zephyr because as soon as I barged into his office, he was on his feet and moving. When we got back to the room, I found Athena at the edge of the bed, not at the center as she had been. I glared hotly at her as I approached her. “I explicitly told you not to move, and you did exactly that!" I said to her as I came to stand in front of her. But her eyes were no longer on me, they were on my brother, who was staring right back at her with an expressionless face. This i***t! “Water," Athena said to me tiredly when she finally pulled her eyes away from my brother. I got one bottle from the fridge. It wasn't too cold, so I hoped she would be able to drink it. I uncapped the bottle and handed it to her. Gently, she took a sip through the straw and sighed in relief. “Thank you,” Athena muttered after she drank the whole bottle of water. I nodded my head and gestured that she get back in bed. When she did, I lifted the top of the bed using the button at its side. Athena smiled in gratitude. " Do you think you can eat? The cook can make you some soup. I haven't stocked up my fridge in forever, so no home-cooked meals from here,” I said to her, and she shook her head. “I just want to sleep for a bit, I'll try to eat later," she said to me as she blinked sleepily. That was when Zephyr stepped forward, but she was already asleep. I quickly checked her and sighed in relief. “It's just sleep. She might wake up later in the night though. Let me go and have something brought up in case. What did you do with those bastards? I haven't been able to leave the side of my mate," I asked Zephyr as I arranged a duvet over Athena. She was going to make a full recovery, and that was all that mattered at that moment. “They are currently dining with the moon goddess. How's the male doing? I hear you were blessed with a male Omega. The goddess has finally smiled upon you with favors," Zephyr said to me, and I smiled at him. "Well, I had long given up on finding my mate. Then Athena arrived, and now mine is here as well,” I said to my brother, and watched how he was staring at his mate. He was acting like he was dealing with one of us. " Zephyr, you do remember that she is immune to your curse, right? Why don't you go to her the way you want to? I'll be back shortly after my visit to the kitchen and to check up on my mate,” I said to Zephyr, who looked at me with an expressionless face, but I ignored him and went to do exactly what I said I was going to do. My mate was still unconscious when I returned to his room. His chart was at the door, so I read it to keep myself up to date on what they had done and what they expected from his recovery. I had barely skimmed through the first page when my mate began to make some sounds from the bed. Sounds that could only be interpreted as the sounds of pain. I tossed the charts and went to him. By instinct, I took his hand in mine and caressed his face with the other one. His eyes cracked open a little to see me. I moved my face closer, hoping to ease whatever nightmare was chasing him. He didn't smile, didn't give any facial expressions. His eyes rolled into his head and the alarms on the machines went off. Something had happened. “What happened?!" The first medic to burst into the room asked as I stumbled away from the bed. What did I do? Did I kill him?! “Veylana! What happened?!" He asked me with a force that snapped me back to reality. “He seemed to be having a nightmare, and I held his hand. He opened his eyes and this happened!" I said, and the doctor nodded his head before rearranging some wires on his chest with a sigh. “It's nothing major. He probably got disturbed in his sleep, or a nightmare, as you call it. He's unconscious, though, but hopefully the next time he opens his eyes, he'll be conscious long enough for us to assess if he's making progress in his healing or not. Which reminds me, what is your relationship with the patient?” the doctor asked me, and my eyes stayed on his. The implication of what he said was the reason for the alarm had me sagging in relief. “Veylana!" he yelled as my knees buckled. “He's my mate."
