ZEPHRY
The door to my office was pushed open by my disheveled sister.
"Zephyr, it's Athena. We need you!" she said to me before rushing off again.
I didn't ask any questions, just followed her immediately. In the infirmary, I found that my mate was hooked up to some machines, and they were beeping like crazy.
“What is the situation?” I asked as I rolled up my sleeves. If they needed my blood, then they were going to have it.
“I can't tell exactly. She has been unconscious since the day of the surgery. She suddenly went into an arrest," my sister said out loud as the healers rallied around her, hanging bags of infusions and giving her injections.
" Give me that, let me give you more blood,” I said to my sister, who handed me the special syringe that she gave me yesterday.
Without hesitation, I plunged the needle into my arm and only stopped when it was full. I placed it on the table and backed away. My sister picked it up with a padded glove and stabbed the needle right into my mate's heart.
The gesture raised my eyebrows.
"It was the fastest way to get the blood through her system," Veylana said to me, and I watched the machines stop beeping fast, and the healers sighed in relief.
I found myself drawing close to the bed. The healers that were close, moved swiftly out of my way as usual. This was a pain that I had long gotten used to a long time ago. I took her hand in mine and just watched her face. I inclined my ear and listened to her heartbeat. I felt good as it began to sound regular.
I didn't realize that the room was now empty until my sister called my attention.
"I have a theory, but I don't know how you would receive it," Veylana said to me and I nodded for her to continue.
"I think she needs you to recover. I've read about the tentative healing powers that a mate bond holds. I know she is your mate. Everyone witnessed how she didn't drop dead after your touch. The story is already spreading all over the kingdom,” Veylana said to me, and I sighed.
"I don't think I have the time to babysit anyone, Veylana," I said, and she glared at me.
"You better fix this attitude of yours before she wakes up, or you'll have a miserable relationship. I'm not asking you to stay with her around the clock. You have things to do, I get that. I mean that you should find time to come and sit with her every day. It might hasten her healing,” Veylana said, and I ran my hand through my hair.
"Fine, I'll find a way around it. Do you have everything you need to take care of her?” She gave me a little smile and a stiff nod.
With another glance at my mate, I left the hospital room and returned to my office.
There was a council meeting in about thirty minutes. I still had some paperwork to handle. I sighed as I sorted out the ones I could attend to immediately and saved the rest for later.
The elders were gathered in the courtroom when I arrived, so I took my seat and waved to them to begin. I didn't have all day.
“Greetings, Alpha. Greetings, fellow council elders. We will begin today's briefing by addressing the recent events that have occurred in our pack. The warrior training for the last batch was recently concluded. The pack's beta has once again done a good job. We will be concluding on the set time for the next set to begin theirs,” one of the elders said, and I nodded my head.
These meetings were often tedious, but I always paid attention. It was not difficult for a coup to be planned under your nose. Though the curse has preserved my life for as long as I can remember.
I listened as they deliberated on other things until they brought up Athena.
“Alpha, you of all people know that you are well respected and feared in the whole seven kingdoms. Nobody dares wage a war on you, but even if they try, they won't survive. No one dares to question your authority, but we have questions about the female assassin that was sent to this pack. We have a lot of questions as to why she is still alive after the blatant threat she has shown herself to be to you, and us, by extension. She should be in the dungeon at the very least, not receiving state-of-the-art treatment,” the elder said, and I stared at him coolly.
Someone chipped in from the other side of the aisle.
“Alpha, that woman should be put to death according to our laws! Even if she miraculously survived your touch, she has no right to the breath in her lungs after the stunt that she pulled!” The other echoed the same sentiment, and I just watched them have their fun.
Naturally, Thane was looking smug from where he sat in the audience.
I sat up, and everywhere immediately went silent.
“On the agenda of the meeting this evening, is there anything else left that doesn't have to do with me?” I asked the elder who had the meeting agenda scroll in his hand, and he looked through the agenda, clearly confused about what I was talking about.
But he shook his head no.
“I will allow this madness to slide because this is the first time the pack has been faced with such a situation, and you don't have any prior experiences to reference, but let me make this clear, if I catch any of your noses in my personal business again, I will take it upon myself to relieve you and your family of such noses. Mind your business as you have done in times past when it comes to things that concern me," I said calmly, and turned over to face Thane.
"This is my final warning to you, Thane. Know your place and do not try to instigate my council against me again.” Thane turned a shade of red, but his face looked mad. I didn't care.
Without a word, I left the council meeting.
