VEYLANA
Athena was starting to regain most of her color, and I was relieved. Her heartbeat and breathing were starting to normalize, and Zephyr was less of a bastard after spending a few hours with her.
Recently, he had a table moved into the room and placed next to the bed. That way, he could hold her hand as he read through some documents.
I personally think that it is sweet, but Zephyr would blow a gasket if I voiced that thought.
“You are staring again," Zephyr said to me without looking up. I rolled my eyes and went to check the charts that I had been keeping since Athena was moved to my room.
“Well, I'm staring at something worth staring at. How are you? We haven't gotten around to talking about your feelings on finally having a mate, someone that you can touch without sending them on a one-way trip to the afterlife,” I said to my brother, desperately trying to hide the smile that was fighting to show up on my face.
As expected, Zephyr gave me an unimpressed look.
I was the only one who dared to do such things with him. It's not like he had another family member who could stand his coldness.
“There is nothing to talk about. She is here and that is all that matters. Once she is awake and well, we can start talking about picking an heir for the seat of the Lycan Alpha, as we already agreed to do as a council," my brother said to me, and I swear to the goddess I wanted to bash his head in.
It's just sad that this is what his mate was going to deal with.
“You know, unless you just want a puppet who can f**k with you, you're going to have to work on your personality. It stinks from a thousand-mile radius," I said to Zephyr. This time he scowled at me.
Athena made a sound, and both of our attentions were drawn to her.
“It looks like she's waking up!” I said in barely concealed excitement as I rushed to her side. I turned to see that Zephyr wasn't coming any closer.
I stepped away to give him the space he would need to come close to her, but he still didn't move.
“What are you doing? Come closer and help her! You might be able to call her wolf," I said to Zephyr, who looked at me with a vacant expression.
“She has no wolf," Zephyr said to me, and I felt my heart sink to the floor.
She lost her wolf as well?
Those bastards! What did they do to her?!
“No!" I whispered as I watched Athena slip back into unconsciousness.
That would explain a lot. Because let's face it, her healing was too slow. It's like she was almost human.
“But that doesn't change anything. You made a commitment to her when you declared that you would take her as your mate in exchange for her life. You don't have to back down now because things just took a nosedive," I said to Zephyr, whose expression didn't change.
“I already knew this before making the commitment. Rather, I had my suspicions. This was the proof that I needed," Zephyr said to me, completely ignoring what I said about him abandoning her.
“Good, you better not dump her! Poor thing has probably been through hell and back twice," I said to Zephyr.
Without waiting for his response, I pulled out the bowl of cool water I had placed beside the table and began to clean her up.
I raised a brow at Zephyr when he didn't leave the room.
“What?" He asked me as I stared at him.
“Until there is an official ceremony, you have no right to be here. Get out," I said to my brother, who didn't look amused at my words.
Well, it was too bad. I was going to be everything this woman needed until he assumed full responsibility for her.
Knowing my brother, that could take another century!
" I don't want to,” my brother said and crossed his arms over his chest. The gesture reminded me of our days as children before the curse set in.
" I didn't ask you what you wanted, I asked you to leave the room and give the lady some privacy. Until the ceremony, she is to be treated with the utmost respect accorded to a woman who isn't married,” I said to my brother, who stared at me like he wanted to argue some more before he sighed and walked out of the room.
I took care of her hygiene needs, changed her clothes, took my sweet time while I was at it, then I went to get my brother.
I don't know what I was expecting, but I didn't expect to see him standing out there as he spoke to one of his betas.
“Let's continue this later," my brother said as he noticed me before he walked by me to enter the room.
I bowed to the beta in greeting and turned to go in when a sweet scent filled my nostrils.
That was unexpected to say the least.
The scent got stronger, and a feeling that I couldn't ignore welled up in me.
I needed to go hunting, and I needed to go right now. I couldn't fight it.
Without a word to my brother, I made my way out of the pack house where my apartment was located.
A pressure in my mind made me open my pack link.
“Where are you going?" Zephyr asked me, sounding annoyed.
“Out, you should be fine with your mate for a couple of hours," I said to him and blocked him out. I needed to focus on the task ahead.
I wasn't paying attention to where I was going until I found that I was standing at the edge of the pack woods.
