The soldier's words dashed all hope and added to the gloom in the room.
"We can't take him to the hospital. Then shall we just watch him die?"
Andres' words were inevitably tinged with a sobbing tone.
No one responded to his words. Obviously, everyone knew that in Edward's current condition, if he didn't get medical attention in time and let his wound get worse, he'd either die or lose his leg and become crippled.
Just then, Edward began to tremble in bed.
It was a spasm caused by the body feeling severe pain.
But the people in the room didn't understand it, worried and surprised. Andres yelled, "He can move, which means he's waking up!"
"Hold him down." Miranda whispered in Carson's ear as he hunched over, saying earnestly, "Don't let him touch his thigh wound. The powder has just set. And if the wound opens up again, he'll bleed again. But I have no more powder."
Carson didn't know why he unthinkingly trusted Miranda at that moment, but he reached out and put his hand on Edward's leg as she instructed.
By the time the spasm was over, Edward's breathing was no longer steady and had become disturbed, but he was still unconscious.
There was no time for further delay. Edward's life hung in the balance if they waited any longer!
Miranda pulled Carson's sleeve and whispered, "Come out with me!"
But Carson's reply was cold.
"Miranda, don't piss me off."
Miranda got depressed by his vicious tone. Once, she had been the youngest and most renowned surgeon, with people lining up for her medical expertise.
But now, she had to put up with this injustice that she shouldn't have to bear in order to save a patient!
Miranda felt supremely wronged!
"Carson, I have something important to say." Miranda didn't look at anyone but into Carson's eyes.
Carson's eyes turned icy, piercing Miranda like shards of ice. His dark, unfathomable gaze momentarily froze her.
The kind of pressure that built up on the battlefield was not something Miranda could handle, so she could not help shaking violently.
But she still stared dauntlessly at Carson, stubborn and persistent.
Caught in Miranda's unwavering stare, Carson lost his composure momentarily.
He vividly remembered the moment when he radioed in, deciding to pursue the drug dealers solo after his entire team was wiped out during a raid that turned into an ambush
Her gaze now must have been just like how his had been back then.
That was weird. Why would that strike him? Carson could not help laughing at himself since he didn't suppose this woman would have that expression.
With the room full of people staring at him, Carson finally straightened up.
"You’d better have something to say, otherwise, you will pay for it." Carson's tone was aloof and harsh, but eventually, he got up and went out.
And Miranda followed him with her head down.
The two went to an empty room.
Miranda suddenly stopped and turned around. While Carson couldn't react in time, Miranda bumped the tip of her nose into his chest.
"Ouch!" She winced in pain, instinctively reaching up to rub her nose.
Carson frowned and took two steps back. Seeing Miranda's expression get better, he asked, "What are you going to say? Just tell me!"
Looking at Carson's chiseled, deep face, Miranda involuntarily grasped the corner of her coat, her palms tightened.
"I'm going to treat Edward."
Their voices rang almost simultaneously.
Carson thought he had a hallucination and gave Miranda an astonished look before asking, "What did you just say?"
With her words out and no chance to regret them, Miranda felt emboldened.
"Carson, as you know, I learned medicine from my grandfather when I was a child. I can handle this kind of injury."
"You can't." Carson interrupted her. He knew Miranda, okay? A lazy, greedy, stupid, lying, and aggressive woman.
However, Miranda didn't get discouraged but kept her back straight. "It's better I treat him than let him die."
"If you treat him, he'll die earlier." Carson regretted this conversation. He should never have believed this woman and come out with her to listen to her nonsense.
He refused to hear it anymore, turning and walking away.
Seeing Carson about to leave, Miranda was utterly anxious. In a hurry, she began to recite her most familiar medical formula.
"What do you want to do?" Carson turned and stared intensely at her.
Miranda spoke firmly, "As I said, I'm going to treat Edward."
This time, Carson stood still for a long time, but eventually, he answered, "No way."
Then, he turned and walked out, both Miranda's call to him and her recitation of the medical formula did not stop him from leaving.
Seeing Carson's back disappear in the doorway, Miranda slid into a chair behind her in despair.
Her mind was blank and buzzing, while she never expected to hit rock bottom like this!
She was knowledgeable and skilled. However, she couldn't do anything but only watch things getting worse, which was really suffocating.
Her heart felt as if it were sealed shut, causing immense discomfort.
Oh, no! Why did it make her like this?!
Miranda longed to scream into the air, seeking to release her anger.
A sense of powerlessness swelled within her, accompanied by a nauseating feeling in her stomach.
She felt sickened. It was truly baffling how she could be reborn into such a despicable person despite her extensive medical knowledge and skills.
