Carson's mind was in utter disarray all afternoon. Every time Edward displayed a flicker of discomfort, he couldn't help but envision Miranda's chubby face in his mind.
He could not stop himself from recalling her fluent voice in the kitchen as she recited medical formula and the confidence and persistence on her face as she talked about treating Edward.
"Wake up!" He kept reminding himself that Miranda couldn't be trusted with Edward's life because it was risky.
But what if she could make it? Carson couldn't prevent himself from thinking about it since he knew that Miranda's grandfather was a renowned doctor.
Regardless of her foolishness, spending over a decade under the guidance of an experienced and exceptional physician would surely instill some knowledge of medicine within her.
Carson, as a matter of fact, was constantly wavering.
For one thing, he couldn't trust a fool like Miranda under any circumstances, but for another, he feared that he might delay Edward's chances of survival by denying Miranda's proposal if she could do it.
Amidst the silent vigil in the yard, chaos erupted within the room.
"Why so many nosebleeds?!"
"The blood won't stop! He's got blood coming out of his mouth! What's going on?!"
A series of anxious voices rang through the room.
And then Andres burst out of there, crying, "Oh, no! Edward seems to be dying!"
At this word, all the people in the courtyard stood up.
Carson shuddered even more. At last, as if he had made some great decision, he retired from the room with a grave face.
"Andres." Carson exited the door and shouted, "Go get Miranda."
Not knowing what Carson's intentions were, Andres obeyed and ran out at once.
Carson turned back into the room, looked at Kate as she broke down in tears, and said hesitantly, "Kate, could you come out with me? I have something to tell you."
"Yeah." Kate paused and then followed him out.
"What’s wrong, General Neils? Just tell me." Kate urged Carson, who had been silent.
Carson didn't know how to state it even though he tried to. After some hesitation, he uttered, "Kate, Miranda's grandfather is a well-known doctor."
At his words, Kate froze for a moment and then looked perplexed.
Carson lowered his head. "I mean, I want Miranda to try and treat Edward."
"This is... Are you serious?" Kate guessed what Carson meant, but her eyes still widened in disbelief the moment she heard his words.
After all, no one could associate Miranda, a vicious woman, with the dependable doctor.
Even Carson found his words a little implausible, but he had to say, "I know Miranda seems unreliable, but her grandfather really has a lot of authority. As she grew up around her grandfather, I think this could be... Edward's only chance of survival."
Kate remained silent for a long while, caught between conflicting thoughts.
During her moments of indecision, Evie rushed out and called for her attention.
"Kate, come in! Edward woke up. He... He wants to talk to you."
Evidently, Edward was trying to say his last words. A tremor ran through Kate's body, nearly causing her to stumble. After a momentary daze, she quickly dashed into the room.
After only a few steps, she stopped, looked back at Carson, wept, and said, "Let Miranda try it. Given the situation, it can't get any worse!"
Miranda had been waiting downstairs. She knew that if Edward were really in an urgent condition, Carson would come for her!
She had the confidence!
And when she met Andres, Miranda was relieved.
"How is Edward now?" In front of Kate's house, Miranda finally saw Carson.
Carson responded, "Terrible. He's had a fever on and off all afternoon. Now suddenly, his nose bleeds, he vomits blood, and his face turns pale. Are you sure you can cure him?" Carson asked, somewhat uncertainly.
Miranda whispered, with her head down and her hands tucked into her quilted jacket, "I was sure of it in the afternoon, but now I'm not. I'll go in and have a look!"
By the time Miranda opened the door, Edward had passed out again.
The instant Miranda entered the room, the people who were looking after Edward gave her a look of disgust.
"Miranda, what are you doing here? Get out of here. Don't you think it’s messed up enough?" Evie said.
Teachers seemed to possess a professional inclination toward disciplining people. As soon as Miranda walked in, Evie furrowed her eyebrows and tried to kick her out.
However, ignoring her, Miranda walked right over to the bed, grabbed Edward's wrist, and began checking on him.
"What are you doing?" Evie tried to push Miranda, but Kate stopped her.
Kate bowed her head and said, "Ms. James, let Miranda check on Edward."
"She... check on what?" Evie's eyes widened in shock.
Kate looked down as she didn't know how to answer the question, so Carson replied, "Miranda's grandfather is a doctor."
Hearing this, Evie was startled for a moment and then got exasperated.
"General Neils, are you kidding me? Miranda is ignorant, but how can you, as a leader, allow her to act recklessly?"
