Chapter Three

1552 Words
Alex’s POV “Hey sleepyhead.” A voice broke through the fog in my head, pulling me reluctantly out of sleep. It was Stacy’s, my friend with whom I spent the night at a hotel. My eyes cracked open to see her already awake, scrolling through her phone beside me in bed. “Hey” I muttered back to her, still waiting for my brain to catch up. She was already awake, scrolling on her phone. I rolled to the side of the bed to check the time, and it was six in the morning. “s**t!” I mumbled as I felt an incoming headache. “Are you alright?” she asked, concerned. “Yeah… just a little headache” I answered, dragging myself out of bed. I stumbled a bit across the room, heading for the shower to freshen up. The warm water rained over me, washing away all the sleepiness. While washing up, I felt a sting in my knuckles. Events of the previous night replayed in my mind. I had just come to meet up with some old friends, including Stacy, and I was hanging out with one of them on the balcony when my eyes caught her leaning against the railing alone. She seemed to be enjoying the cool night breeze like I was, and I found myself stealing glances at her. She looked young... way younger than my usual type, so I tried to ignore her, but I couldn’t. She wore a pink split tank top and a black mini skirt with cute heels. Her copper ginger hair falling perfectly on her face in layers. While contemplating talking to her, an important call came in which drove me further away from the noisy crowd. When I came back, I was met with the sight of her being harassed by a drunk. No one was doing anything; they just watched her struggle with that drunk. The anger hit like a flash of fire, and before I knew it, my fist had connected with his jaw. Over and over, until I could barely feel the sting in my knuckles. After the bastard was dragged away, I got to take another look at her up close. She was ethereal, like a dream I had no right to have, and my pulse jumped the closer I got. She couldn’t have been more than twenty. Too young, too innocent-looking… but my mind didn’t care. “No Alex she’s too young for you!” I snapped at myself silently, attempting to drown the dirty thoughts. When her friends rushed over, I took it as my cue to leave and did. I spent the rest of the night trying to kill the thoughts of her with alcohol and even s*x, but flashes of her beautiful small and curvy body kept replaying. “Get over it… You have work to do,” I snapped myself back to reality. I turned off the shower and stepped out, wrapping a towel around my waist. Heading to the couch, I grabbed the new three-piece suit the hotel staff had prepared for me, just as I had ordered. I’d chased away more than one distraction with meetings and schedules, and this morning would be no different. Focus on work… that’s the only thing that mattered Stacy had already got out of bed as well, with a small towel wrapped around her body. She turned to look at me and her eyes widened. “Just when I thought you couldn’t look hotter.” She teased, her eyes fixed on my bare chest and waist. “If I wasn’t so sore right now, I’d jump on you again” she continued, biting her lower lip seductively. I let out a chuckle at her statement. “Yeah you would.” I had always known I was a fairly attractive man since I had everyone tell me and, truth be told, I always used it to my advantage. “When are we meeting again?” she asked, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “Later today? Tomorrow?” “Sorry, I can’t make any promises,” I said, slipping on my shirt and straightening the cuffs. “I’ve got back-to-back meetings with investors today. We’re talking expansion, new partnerships, all that fun stuff. My week’s packed, starting with this morning.” I continued, an exhausted breath escaping my mouth. “Aw… that sounds like a lot!” she sympathized. “It is.” About fifteen minutes later, I managed to put myself together enough to leave the hotel and start my day. I hopped into my car and drove off to my office. The cold air conditioning crashed on my face as I sped on the highway. My mind drifted back to her again. Her pretty eyes glistened in the dim light, making it hard to look away. “Focus Alex.” I whispered on my breath. “Besides, you’re probably never going to see her again.” It felt strange for me that I couldn’t get my mind off her, especially since I grew accustomed to women catching feelings first but no matter how much I tried to deny it I knew I wanted to see her again and maybe get a taste of her. My thoughts were interrupted by a call. It was Edward, my superior at work and the president of the company. “Hello, Alex.” His deep, husky voice was as cold and clipped as ever. “Hey, Edward! What’s up?!” I answered, sounding way too cheerful, just to get under his skin. “Ugh!” He grimaced, his voice laced with the irritation I enjoyed fishing out of him. Our relationship had always been strictly professional, with a hint of casual ease on my end that he never quite reciprocated. We first met in college. He was an assistant to one of the professors, and I was a wide-eyed first-year student. His aloof, standoffish demeanor was nothing new, and he always shut me down whenever I tried to get to know him. But that only seemed to make me more glued to him. Genius, determination, and an endless stream of big ideas, he had a mind I couldn’t help but admire. Eventually, he left to take over his dad’s company, Sterling Peak, an autonomous vehicle engineering firm. Years later, after graduating and gaining some experience of my own, I applied to Sterling Peak too, working my way up through the ranks to the role of Vice President. And now, here we were, face to face again… or rather, phone to phone. Right back where I’d started, still magnetized by him, whether he knew it or not. Even though he acted cold towards me, he always acknowledged and appreciated my efforts in whatever I did as his partner and assistant. “I don’t usually do this… but I need your help.” Edward continued, almost sounding nervous . “Oh! My help?” I answered, expressing my shock. It was indeed true that he hardly asked for any help. “I’ve encountered a situation. I forgot an important file at home, it’s essential for the investors’ meeting.” He explained. “I see. That’s a problem. Why can’t you just go grab it yourself?” I asked, suppressing the curiosity bubbling in my voice. “I cannot return home at the moment. There are… ” he paused, as if hesitating to speak further “… other personal matters I must get to immediately.” He continued. “That sounds like a lie” I muttered silently. I knew that because one of the things I learned about Edward from years of knowing him was that he was a terrible liar. However, he didn’t seem like he wanted to say why, so I just let it go instead of pestering him about it. “Alright, I get it. So you need me to go to your place and get the file for you?” I exhaled deeply. “Yes. I understand it’s an inconvenience, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could make a stop.” His sharp voice flickered with relief. “No problem, I’ll handle it. Just send me the address, and I’ll grab it for you.” “Thank you. I do not ask for favors lightly, but this is necessary,” Edward continued. “Of course. I’ve got it covered. Don’t worry about it.” I chucked quietly at his statement. “Just send the address.” The call cut and Edward sent the address. I headed to retrieve the documents as he wanted. It was the first time I had ever gone to his house as he was a very private person, so it was a very intriguing thing for me. I pulled up to the large gate and the security let me in. “Touché!” I exclaimed as a small grin plastered on my face. I always knew he had taste, but I wasn’t ready for the giant beauty of a house I was welcomed with. I walked up to the huge door decorated with small flowers around it and rang the doorbell. There was no response the first time so I rang it again and the door unlocked revealing the last person I ever thought I’d see behind it.
