Chapter Four

LILY’S POV “Holy s**t!” I gasped, my eyes widening in disbelief. The same tall, striking figure who had fought off that creep, the one I couldn’t get out of my mind, was standing right in front of me. I’d told Kristina all about him, and we’d tried to find him at the club afterward, but he’d practically vanished. Yet here he was, looking even more handsome than I remembered. He wore a different suit that still looked like it was made just for him, hugging his body and showing his strong build. I had never been so jealous of a piece of fabric. My eyes traveled across his body back to his dark pupils and the slight lines near his mouth, which somehow only added to his allure. There was something effortlessly attractive about him, like he’d long ago outgrown the need to impress anyone. His dark, chiseled features and the confident ease in his movements made him dangerously attractive, mature but magnetic, with the strength of someone used to getting his way. He looked just as surprised as I was before opening his mouth to speak. “Hi!” he greeted, his smooth, deep voice snapping me out of my daze. The way he sounded made me breathless. “Oh… uh… hi,” I stammered, blinking rapidly and trying to pull myself together. “I’m so sorry for being rude; please come in!” I added, stepping back to show him the way. “Gosh, Lily, get yourself together!” I muttered under my breath. He walked in slowly as Marie came back from the bathroom looking surprised at the guest that stood in the house. “Good morning Sir, what can we do for you?” Marie asked politely, looking in a daze too at his beauty, I’m sure. She briefly glanced at me asking with her eyes if I knew him. I froze for a moment, thinking of whether to tell her the truth or not… I picked the latter and mouthed “No” to her before she glanced back. “Good morning, ma’am,” he replied, his voice smooth and composed. “I’m Alex, Edward’s assistant.” “Oh! You’re Mr. Alex? The boss called just a few minutes ago, saying you’d be by for a document he forgot.” He chuckled softly, giving a slight nod. “Yes, that’s exactly why I’m here.” Marie smiled, gesturing toward the couch. “Please, take a seat. I’ll go get it.” She hurried off, leaving us alone in the room again. Soon another silence filled the room as I stole a glance at him, my mind racing with a dozen thoughts. “This stunning man works for my father?” I could hardly believe it. “The man I’d wanted to see again so badly was actually my dad’s assistant?” it sounded so unreal. I tried to keep my face calm, but I could feel the shock creeping through my expression. “We meet again,” he said with a slight smirk, clearly enjoying my reaction. His gaze was direct, unflinching, and it stirred something reckless in me. I inhaled sharply in an attempt to wipe off the shock I had written on my face. “Yeah, we meet again.” I replied, returning his smile with another. He nodded toward my wrist. “How’s the wrist?” he asked, his voice dropping a bit, softening as he noticed the faint bruise. “Oh, it’s fine!” I said, still looking at him, caught in his gaze that made the rest of the world disappear. “You kind of vanished last night…” I added, keeping my tone casual, though I was holding my breath. “I wanted to thank you again, but you’d disappeared before I had the chance. I almost thought you were a ghost or some kind of guardian angel,” I laughed, hoping he didn’t notice the warmth rising to my cheeks. He laughed too, a deep, rich sound that somehow made him even more attractive. “Yeah, I guess I was your guardian angel,” he teased. “But I didn’t think the woman I helped would turn out to be Edward’s daughter…right?” I nodded as my stomach knotted at the mention of my dad. Memories of the earlier incident crawled up again but I pushed them back. My main focus was to burn the image of Alex in my memory and perhaps use it later. “He called me cute.” I thought silently, trying to stop myself from blushing at his compliment. “So like... What do you do at the company?” I asked, not really interested in his position at my dad’s company but to make him continue talking so I could drown in his perfect voice. “Oh! Edward’s never mentioned me to you?” he asked, his voice filled with disappointment that caught me off guard. “Uhh… well… dad doesn’t really talk… about work…” I answered dastardly. Another laughter erupted from him, making me furrow my brows in annoyance. He was clearly teasing me and I didn’t notice quickly. He saw my reaction and stopped, still chuckling quietly. “I’m sorry, I know how Edward can be.” He gave me an apologetic look, then added, “I’m the vice president of the company… so, pretty much your dad’s right hand.” He grinned, watching my reaction. A surprised laugh slipped out of me. “Yeah, right. I’d believe the world was ending tomorrow before I’d believe he had a ‘best friend.’” He smirked, still looking amused. I felt a little rush, like I wanted to keep him talking just so I could keep drinking in that deep voice of his. “Soooo, when do you get off work?” I asked, raising an eyebrow, fully aware of how suggestive it sounded. “Why? do you want to take me out to dinner?” he shot back, his gaze warming with a flirty edge. The way he looked at me made my stomach flip, a deep pulse settling low in my belly. “Can I?” I asked, lowering my voice with a smirk, feeling bolder than I ever thought I could be. He went silent, still smiling as his gaze flicked over me, and I could almost see the words forming on his lips. But before he could answer, Marie’s footsteps broke the tension. I turned away, my heart pounding, as she handed him a large brown envelope. “Are these the files?” she asked, carefully handing them over to Mr. Alex. He flipped open the envelope, inspecting the papers inside before nodding in approval. His large, veined hands caught my attention, and for a moment, I couldn’t look away. Thoughts of those hands wrapping around my neck, having their way with me… inside me, flickered through my mind, and a shiver of excitement rolled through me, making me swallow hard. Once he’d confirmed the documents, he turned to leave without a word, heading for the door. “Wait!” I blurted, reaching out and grabbing his thick arm before I even realized what I was doing. The heat of his body seeped through my hand as I held on, my fingers curling around the firm muscle beneath his suit. Marie’s eyes went wide as she took in my sudden movement, and I quickly shot her a look, subtly signaling for her to give us a moment. She hesitated, then nodded and walked off, leaving Alex and me alone. He paused, his eyebrow quirking slightly as he turned to look down at me, curious. “You didn’t answer my question,” I said, my voice steady, meeting his gaze with a calm defiance. A slow smile played on his lips as he gently pulled his arm away from my grip. For a split second, I considered holding on, but I forced myself to let go, not wanting to push him too far. “Look, Miss…” “Lily,” I interrupted, my eyes narrowing, daring him to keep up the formality. “My name is Lily.” “Miss Lily,” he continued, his tone steady, his smile barely faltering. The formality somehow felt like another layer of his distance. “I know you’re grateful I helped you out,” he said smoothly, clearly ignoring my frown. “You don’t have to thank me again.” “But I want to take you out,” I pressed, refusing to back down. He chuckled, a little smug, as if my persistence amused him. “That’s cute, Miss Lily, but really, there’s no need.” He gave me a look, one corner of his mouth curving up. “If you really insist, you can always drop a little gift by the office… I’ll get it, don’t worry.” “Right, the office…,” I thought, feeling my hopes deflate as I realized he wasn’t going to make this easy. Maybe I’d have to settle for a detour to his office, after all. “Okay, fine,” I said, stepping back, but refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing my disappointment. “It was nice meeting you, Lily.” His voice softened, the seductive undertone slipping back for just a second, as his gaze lingered, sparking something deep in my chest. “What is he playing at?” my stomach flipped again as I watched him walk out the door into his car and drove off. My mind immediately went to Kristina. “Oh my gosh! I need to tell her! She’s gonna love this.” I mumbled dashing to my room, thanking her in my mind for making me party so hard last night, I had to stay home the next day.
