The Grind
If you were like me you probably watched all the shows on TV about a young girl moving to the big city and living in a luxury apartment with the perfect view as soon as she stumbles her small town ass off of whatever train, plane taxi she took to get there. air perfectly done and a welcoming smile where ever she goes. You would think that for an story that is so widely spread that there would be at least a little scrap of truth in it right? Nope. Not at all. Complete Bullshit. My small town butt found this out the hard way when I thought I was grown enough to leave my pack and live among the constantly smiling and cheerful humans I saw on the TV as a child. having said that, this is what trying to imitate TV will get you.
Turns out that Taxi's are way to expensive to use to go any long distance and when your family refuses to help you jump ship out of their preplanned life they have set out for you a plane ticket is out of the questions as well, so know what you do? you get on a crowded greyhound bus at two in the morning (because you don't want to be caught by over protective family)with what ever you could carry on your back and your old gym duffel from high school, which by the way is not a lot at all when you think about it but enough to be a pain when trying to haul ass in the middle of the night to the bus terminal three counties away(your county has no bus terminal because why would you ever want to leave and you can't leave from place they would recognize you) while trying to dodge the night patrol and you can't shift or they would sense your wolf's consciousness in an instant because f**k me right?
Sorry. City life has made me very cynical but back to the story.
So after having spent an ungodly amount of hours on a bus packed with unwashed bodies and a screaming toddler(who takes a bus at two in the f*****g morning? f**k you Karen) you finally you arrive at your destination. You're tired, covered in sweat and your hair is no better then a rats nest tied up on the top of your head but some naive part of you is still hoping that the dream you've been having in your head since childhood is going to start up any moment now that you've finally made it to the city. You are of course wrong again. Your first intro into city life is not one, not two , but THREE creepers cat calling your with comments on your ass as you lug your stuff to the address you have saved to your phone of the "Quaint Studio Apartment, Great for first time renters".
Well you get there by sheer force of well and desperation to continue believing that life cannot get any worse than this moment, you are of course disappointed and when you arrive to find out that your landlord is a slum lord and quaint is the bullshit term used to describe an apartment that's so small its basically a room with a with a stove, a leaky sink and a fridge so old it was probably installed when the building was first built. The bathroom(using that term loosely here) is no more than a toilet, sink with suspicious stains all along the rim and drain, and a shower with cracked tiles and a rusted shower head. After having gotten settled and trying in vain to clean the room as well as you can without no supplies, you create a makeshift bed using your sheets and duffel bag to lay on and using your backpack as a pillow. In the morning you will wake up feeling like someones hit you with a bus which would be an act of pure mercy at this point because reality will have hit you and the weight of your actions will finally settle in your mind.
You're f****d.
By the grace of god you find a job within walking distance of your hovel as a waitress. You then get your first paycheck and realize there's no way in hell you can live off this and your checks so you have to get ANOTHER job. Life sucks and you're run to the ground trying to save money and not die from exhaustion trying to pay for your over priced four walled shack. after a year of this you decide to use you're savings and take out student loans to go to school so you can get a degree and move on with your life. its good to point out that not once this year have you been able to shift nor have you come across any other wolves in the city. if your experience went anyway like mine it will bring you to the present day where I am moving my still minimal belongings into the dorms and letting out a huge sigh of relief because for the first time in months I'm not looking at stained walls that must have been stained by years of chain smoking and unwashed hands.
Apologies for the rent but as you've read my life has been s**t and so it gets to be s**t for you too. now back to the present day.
~Present Day~
I unload the last of my stuff into the room, by unload I mean i placed the two bags I came with on my new bed as well as another medium sized duffel i bought to transport some of the rest of my stuff. What an upgrade. I'm moving into the dorms a few days early because I really didn't want to spend another day in that gross building or have to deal with the creepy landlord "checking in" to make sure I was doing alright. just another excuse for him to stare at my chest the entire time. a real charmer.
The other side of the room was still empty which I expected with the early move in and all. I chose the bed closest to the window in case I ever needed to make a quick exit. I'm hoping my roommate wont mind when she moves in but even if she does I'm not moving. After a year of taking s**t from everyone I just don't give a crap anymore.
After an hour of unpacking I decided to take a walk around campus to get a better idea of the surroundings. The campus is in the downtown part of the city and looks like it was built to resemble an old castle. pretty neat I guess except for the part where they decided to follow through with the aesthetic and not install AC in the dorms as if we were actually living in those times. For the amount of money that goes into the school from the tuition paid, you would think they could have splurged a little on that end.
Anyways, I continue my walk around campus which brings me through to the main downtown area where most of the cafes and shops are. Even though I've lived here for a year I haven't had enough time to really walk through the area because I was always working at either the restaurant or the cafe. I had to quit my job at the restaurant where I got my first job at since I wouldn't have time with classes and everything but I'm going to keep up with my job at the cafe. its a short walk from campus and I've made a few good friends here. speaking of friends, I walk into the cafe to see my very flustered friend Renata. She has a customer in front of her who keeps shoving her drink in Renata's face. Renata's face lights up when she sees me but in the two seconds she wasn't paying full attention to the angry women in front of her, the harpy decided that it was a big enough offense to try and throw her hot coffee in my friends face. seeing what was about to happen i rushed over and grab the woman's arm just as she got the lid off and was raising her arm to throw the coffee. Unfortunately the coffee splashed out from the struggle and splashed down the front of Renata's apron but thankfully not her face. The woman starts screaming like I had hit her and tries to slap at me using her free hand since I was still holding the arm with the coffee. I push her hand away but the hot coffee in her hand splashes on my arm and I flinch at the burn. This gives the woman the moment she needed to pull her arm away away from my grasp and for a moment it looked like she was going to throw the rest of it in my face now but as she goes to throw it, a hand reaches out and slaps it from her hand. We both look up in shock to see a man standing there hand still extended between us as if shielding me from her. I can"t really see his face that wall since he's much taller than my 5'5" self and hes facing the now meek looking woman while partially standing in front of me. By this time hear my friend Renata coming back with the manager. I hadn't even noticed her leave during the commotion.
As the manager takes over the situation Renata runs over to me with a wet towel for my arm and starts fussing over me.
"Oh my god are you okay? I'm so sorry!" I try to push her hand away but she insists on keeping the cold towel on my arm.
"I'm okay, I swear. Its just a small burn." she looks at me like she doesn't believe a word coming out of my mouth. "seriously, I'm alright. that guy stopped her before the crazy b***h could her worst." I point to the guy who was standing with the manager who seemed like he was trying to get an idea of what had went down. as if he heard me he turned his head to glance at my friend and I. Seeing his face fully for the first time I realized he was the handsomest man I had ever seen. he looked no older than twenty five and curly black hair that ended just above his collar. His eyes a piercing blue and bordered with thick lashes that only made their color stand out more. He had sharp curving brow that gave his face an intense look and high cheek bones and a thin sculpted nose. Finished with a sharp jaw and he had the looks that would place him in the high fashion magazines and runways. especially with his towering height that seemed to dwarf everyone still standing in the cafe. The most interesting and most terrifying part I only noticed after I had gotten over my shock and smelled the air.
He was a wolf.
My whole body went on red alert and all I could think of was how I was going to get out of there. I push Renata's hands off me and get up quickly. she stands up tom and grabs my hand.
"Hey whats wrong." I pull my hand away a bit more harshly than I meant to and she looks a bit hurt but covers it quickly. crap now I feel bad. But not bad enough to stay.
"I'm sorry but I need to leave. I need to go NOW." I try to say this low so that he won't hear me though I know there might not be a point depending on how recently he shifted. The more often a wolf shifts, there better there senses will be while in human form. It's been so long since the last time I've shifted that my senses have considerably dulled. I just didn't Know how much they had dulled until now. I can't believe I didn't notice him when I first came in. Stupid!
I pull away from a still concerned Renata and haul ass out of there hoping he won't notice me leave. on my way back to the dorms I take the longest route possible, sometimes going in circles, backtracking as well as going down every stinking alley possible hoping the stench will cover up my scent and keep the wold off my trail in case he tries to track me down. It's already rare seeing a wolf out of there territory but there's no way he wouldn't have noticed the change in my smell from not having shifted in over a year and from living with humans. he might try investigating and if he does he might lead my old pack back to me.
Fuck my life!
I finally make it back to the dorm and barricade myself inside. Hopefully in a few days he'll be out of the city and I'll be free again.
