Chapter 4

"Coralie." I hear his soft voice.

"Hey you." I greet him.

He smiles lightly.

"You know, you're sitting on my spot." I joke

"Oh yeah, right." He says.

I can tell his mind is drifted far off. The look on his face doesn't comfort me at all.

I manage to flip my tail out of the water and plant myself on the rock next to him.

"Is something bothering you?" I ask tenderly.

He stays silent as if he is not ready to speak to me.

I glance over the sea and admire the way the last tip of sun kisses the line where the ocean and sky meet. Pink, red and orange colours within the clouds and sky. The deep blue colour of the sea compliments the calming atmosphere. I feel the wind build up against my wet face. The constant sound of the waves makes the whole sunset seem so, majestic. This is why I love sunsets.

"Well.." I hear Triton. "I know that your father agreed to allow me to go with you." He says.

"I know, isn't it awesome!" I blurt out. I look over at Triton and he doesn't look happy at all. I guess I got ahead of myself. Maybe he wants to stay in Atlantis.

He lifts his head to look at me. "Coralie, I have worked hard to get where I am. I am the head guard of the great King Neptune. He is a very powerful merman and a god. I made an oath to take care of him and his family.

I don't think me going to land with you and pursuing our relationship in secrecy is ethical of me. Also, what happens when you graduate from Mystic High and we have to come back to Atlantis. Soon you'll have to take your father's place as Queen. You need a prince Coralie. Your father would be displeased with me if he found out about us. " he says.

A hurtful feeling goes through me when he tells me I need a prince. As if he is not good enough. I hate that he feels that way. He is right about everything. I should probably go alone. He is risking way too much for me.

"Triton look.." I place my hand over his for some comfort. "If you don't want to try and see where this might go to, then we don't have to. I understand you're risking way too much here and I know I rushed you into it. Although I still want you to come with me to land. You're the only merman I trust. " I say shyly.

"Coralie, Of course I'll come with you to land, I care about you way too much to let you to go alone. I do like you. Please don't take this the wrong way hey. I want us to try. I just don't want to disappoint the King." He says.

I smile from ear to ear. Triton places his arm around me and pulls me closer. His warm chest soothes me. I glance back over to see the beautiful sun finally set.

"For what it's worth Triton, I will personally make sure you don't lose your job because of me ." I say to him.

I swim down the stairs and enter the Throne room. My father, mother and Triton are discussing matters probably rules with Triton and I see his head nod in agreement.

My mother sees me entering the room.

"Coralie darling." She announces my presence.

"Good morning!" I greet everyone in the room.

Honestly I am very excited about going to land and gaining my own pair of legs and something called toes. I've heard tales about humans from my father. I have never been to land or seen anything like it.

"Coralie. When you and Triton get close to shore. There is a magic sea weed you must eat that allows you to gain your legs." My father says.

"Okay. How do we get it? Where do you find it?" I ask.

"Because I am a god, we have these things at hand. With my trident I can transform any sea weed into the magic sea weed. Here you go." Says my father.

He hands over a little box similar to the box I got on my first birthday. It was a gold antique box. Passed down to every born princess. In my box was a gold badge with the kingdom's emblem on it and my name engraved. It was given to me by Uncle Zeus.

I open the box my father placed in my hand, it's the magic seaweed. Its purple and it shines so brightly it's blinding. Probably because it's made of magic from the gods.

" Once you're close to shore, eat this sea weed and your tail will transform to legs. After the transformation takes place, each of you will be given a necklace with a device that will allow you to contact us in Atlantis or allow you to wish for your tail or legs." Says my father directly to Triton and I.

Triton and I nod as we listen to the instructions. After my father finishes, he takes both my hands into his palm.

"Coralie, remember that you're a Princess and daughter of a god. When you're on land you might find things out about yourself that you never knew about here in water. Please look after yourself." He says to me.

"Yes father." I reassure him. We say our goodbye's and Triton and I head off to conquer land.

Triton and I have been travelling for about three hours now and all we've seen is open water. The big blue. We play "eye spy with my little eye" and every time we just say "water". We're already beginning to get sea sick.

"Where will we even stay Triton?" I realise I didn't bother to find this out.

"You're father has told me a lot about himself. Did you know he used to live on land before your uncle Zeus made him god of the sea? He gave us his old house to stay in." Triton informs me.

"Wow! I had no idea he lived on land. That is why he always told tales about land." I put everything together.

Finally we reach the reef, this means we're getting close. We see a school of fish swim by. Lots of kelp and sea weed around us. Everything is green. The coral looks so pretty. They give colour to the nature. Blue, pink, crimson and peach. All of it , just effortlessly beautiful.

We swim by and we feel the waves of the shore pick up.

"Coralie, I think it's time to eat that sea weed. I'm hungry." Triton says. I nod in agreement. I reach over for the gold box and open it up. There are two pieces of sea weed. I offer one to Triton and I reach for mine.

As I bring it towards my mouth ready to chew and swallow, he says.

"Remember, once you transform we won't be able to breathe under water." says Triton.

Before he even finishes, I have already swallowed. It just slid down my throat. " I won't be able to breathe?" I ask him in panic.

My hearts starts racing, I keep hearing the voice in my head saying, you going to drown, you're going to die!

Triton probably sees the panic on my face and says. " After the transformation just swim up to surface. Stay calm." He tells me.

I pull myself together and wait for it to take place. I keep telling myself, you're a mermaid you won't drown, to shut the voice in my head. Suddenly I see this extremely bright light shining from the bottom of my tail, and moves up to my hips.

Triton's tail does the same. I feel a tingling sensation in my tail. I almost like how it feels. Moments later I see two little feet hanging from these long pillers. " My legs!" I say, not realising all my oxygen leaving me. My eyes go big and Triton points up.

I remember he told me to swim to the surface. I swim up to the surface and take a huge breathe, Triton follows me. We swim to shore and I feel my hands in the wet damp sand as we're crawling. We scan over the environment, there's not a single soul on the beach.

Triton and I look at our legs, five minutes of trying to understand how these things work.

"Triton, I just realised, we're naked." I say laughing.
