Chapter 6: Repaying a Life-Saving Debt

Ethan’s eyes froze, turning cold as he looked at Olivia. “If you want to risk your life, go ahead and try.” A mocking smile tugged at Olivia’s delicate features. “How do you know I haven’t already? What if I just lost 200cc of blood? Would you still ask me to donate to her?” “Olivia, stop being unreasonable. The maximum blood loss during menstruation is between 20cc and 60cc. If you’re going to make excuses, at least make them believable.” Olivia let out a bitter laugh. She had spelled it out clearly, yet he still didn’t believe her. If he cared even a little about her, he would have asked more questions. If he knew her at all, he would know she wasn’t the type to let someone die without trying to help. That was the difference between love and indifference. Hannah’s small cut sent him into a panic. Yet when Olivia had gone through a dangerous miscarriage, he hadn’t even noticed. As Olivia’s heart ached, she noticed someone standing at the hospital door. She froze in place. The day she had fainted, she vaguely remembered seeing a figure. She had also heard a man’s gentle, low voice calling out to her. Forcing her eyes to open, she saw this man before her now. She remembered clearly that she had tightly gripped his arm, weakly pleading, “Please, save me.” When she had woken up, James had told her a handsome man with glasses had brought her to the hospital. Olivia smiled wryly to herself. She walked over to Shawn Yates and softly asked, “Are you Hannah’s brother?” Shawn nodded slightly, his voice gentle. “Miss Olivia, if you have any health concerns, I can—” Olivia resigned herself to her fate, closing her eyes briefly. Fate really had a twisted sense of humor. The man she had wanted to repay for saving her life turned out to be Hannah’s brother. She let out a bitter laugh and said, “Mr. Yates, could I have a word with you in private?” Just as she was about to lead Shawn Yates to the stairwell, her wrist was grabbed by Ethan. “What do you need to talk to him about? Why can’t you say it in front of me?” Olivia sneered, “You think you’re entitled to know?” “Olivia, since when did you become so unreasonable?” “Is it me being unreasonable, or are you just heartless?” Without waiting for Ethan’s reaction, she pulled free from his grip. Under Ethan’s icy stare, she led Shawn Yates to a corner. Olivia’s once-beautiful face had turned deathly pale. She lifted her head, looking at Shawn Yates with a bitter smile. “Mr. Yates, you saved my life that day. I never had a chance to thank you. I didn’t expect to repay you so soon. I’ll donate blood for your sister, but I have one request. I hope you’ll keep what happened between us a secret.” Shawn furrowed his brow, his voice still gentle. “The child was Ethan’s, wasn’t it?” Olivia gave a faint, detached smile. “It doesn’t matter anymore. The child is gone. I just don’t want this to affect my decision.” She didn’t know how Ethan would react if he found out. She just wanted to avoid unnecessary complications and leave Ethan’s side as soon as possible. Shawn’s expression darkened for a moment as he studied her face. He could see a resemblance to his mother in her features. Concern flickered across his face. “But you lost a lot of blood back then. It’s only been a few days. Are you sure you can handle it?” A mocking smile tugged at Olivia’s lips. “That’s my problem. I just want to repay my debt. After this, we’ll be even.” “There’s no need for you to do that. I’m not that kind of person. If your body can’t handle it, I won’t force you.” “I don’t like owing anyone, especially someone connected to Hannah. Mr. Yates, I hope you won’t forget our agreement.” With that, Olivia nodded slightly to Shawn Yates before walking over to the waiting nurse. “Take me to donate blood.” “Olivia!” Ethan pulled her back, his gaze sharp as he stared at her down. “What did you talk to Shawn Yates about? Are you hiding something from me?” Olivia met his gaze coldly, a small, sarcastic smile playing on her lips. “What, worried I’m looking for a new sugar daddy? Don’t worry, even if I were that desperate, I wouldn’t go after one of your friends.” With that, she yanked her arm free from Ethan’s grip and straightened her back, following the nurse inside. Ethan’s heart felt like it had been punched. He watched Olivia’s retreating figure, his fists slowly clenching. Twenty minutes later, Olivia emerged from the room. Her small face was deathly pale, and her lips, usually a soft pink, were now drained of all color. Her eyes were dull, and her body swayed unsteadily. She supported herself against the wall as she made her way down the hall. Ethan quickly followed, bending down to scoop her up. His gaze was filled with an emotion he couldn’t put into words. “I’ll take you somewhere to rest.” But before he could move, a nurse called out from behind him. “Mr. Ethan and Miss Hannah is emotionally unstable. She’s crying and asking to see you. You should go check on her.” Olivia’s expression remained blank, but the corners of her pale lips curled into a bitter smile. While she was donating blood, she had already felt herself losing consciousness, her vision going black. She had forced herself to walk out of the room. When she saw Ethan walking toward her, she had a small glimmer of hope. She wanted to tell him that she couldn’t hold on any longer, that she needed him to take her away. But after hearing what the nurse said, she let out a self-deprecating laugh. Between Hannah and her, Ethan had never once chosen her. Sure enough, after a brief moment of hesitation, Ethan put her down and said, “Wait here.” Olivia watched calmly as Ethan set her down and rushed into Hannah’s hospital room. She quickly lowered her head, hiding the tears welling up in her eyes. “Miss Olivia, let me take you home,” Shawn Yates offered, stepping forward to help her. But Olivia pushed him away. She looked at him defiantly and replied coldly, “Mr. Yates, the debt between us is settled. I don’t owe you anything anymore!” With that, she supported herself against the wall and slowly made her way out. She felt her legs trembling, her vision growing darker, and her strength waning. But she forced herself to keep going, to leave the presence of the Song family and Ethan. She hadn’t gotten far before her body finally gave out, and she collapsed on the floor. Just as she was about to hit the ground, a strong arm caught her around the waist. A man’s anxious voice called out, “Olivia!”
