Chapter 17

1200 Words
While Amelia had checked whether anyone was looking in her direction, she turned her head to see if she would take some of her clothes and leave the room, but her focus caught CCTV cameras fixed just at the end of every partition of the compartment. Ugh!!!! She exclaimed while expressing how disappointed she was. In a few seconds, she went mute. “Even though I escaped from this building, where do I know? Who do I know? Where will I run to? How am I sure I would survive this move? All these cameras are fixed here just to monitor me…” Many rhetorical questions kept popping up in her memory. No one to answer anyone. She shook her head and then skidded down gradually until she was seated on the bare ground since she was leaning on the wall. In a few seconds, after many deliberations, she sighed and let out a deep breath from her nostrils. “Even if I don't make it to escape here, may I have a look at the way things are going on in this building? I'm already spending eternity here without knowing anything else except my room.” She mumbled to herself and rose energetically. She cared not whether someone was looking at her or not, she confidently left the room and began to trek down the staircases. It seemed to her as if she were on a different planet. She began to see everything anew. She admired almost everything that was used to adorn the building, not minding that she was on an escape mission. Though she rightly knew that it won't be possible for her to exit the building and even if she does, she has no place to go to hide. Had it been in Michigan, she needed no one's help to run for her safety, but Italy happened to be a strange man's land to her. “Mia, where do you think you're going?” She got shocked into her marrow not just by what the person said, but because of the voice that addressed her. It was friendly but familiar and authoritative, She paused in dismay. “Greetings sir” She muttered reflexively. “That doesn't answer my question in any way. Where are you going?” The voice responded. 'I can only die for once. It's either I succeed and live or remain in captivity for the rest of my life.' She mumbled to herself, then shrugged off the intimidation by the voice and continued moving forward, though at a different pace. “And I repeat, where are you headed to?” The voice reiterated. “I'm just observing the building” She replied while already looking sideways to see the person questioning her. Her eyes caught Damon who sat on a chair arranged as an office chair and tickled continuously on his laptop while two bodyguards were standing behind him. Their bodies were built like that of fighters. But that wasn't the main thing that got her glaring at them on end. Both of them were carrying guns, not minding that they were inside an apartment. A glance at them got her shivering, she took two steps backward, but finally continued moving forward. “What could they be doing with those guns, even inside a fenced apartment? What seems to be that important to them?” She muttered as the fear of what might happen next kept her standing without making more movement. “Take her into the room and lock it, then bring the keys to me here.” Damon commanded without lifting his head as he was busy pressing the keys on his laptop. "Yes sir!” One of the guards replied while already making a step in advancement toward Amelia. “I'll go in by myself. I knew I'd been entrapped. But life is not supposed to be this difficult.” She hurried backward, not allowing the armed guard to catch up with her. “This is modern-day slavery. I'd never bargained for this. I have never had this kinda dream, even the weirdest one…” She kept muttering some unclear words to herself as she walked up the stairs. Just a few seconds, as she was being followed by the guard, tears began to settle in her eyes. While still trekking to the room, tears began to drop from her eyes. She managed to clean it with her bare hands, but she started to have a runny nose. Gently, she caressed her nose with her hands and sneezed. As she stopped hearing the guard's footsteps, she turned back only to be astonished as the guard was right behind her walking with such temerity just as someone operating commanded by a supreme being. She didn't stop but increased her speed. Despite all she was doing, the guard neither said a word nor gave any signal. Rather, it appeared like she was less concerned. “Can't you utter a word to me? Or are you in this game together?” Amelia whispered to the guard, but he gave a deaf ear to the question. “This is an infringement of someone's right. Can't you say a word to me?” She muttered with her cracked tone as her face was gradually getting bathed with tears. She approached the door and was about to enter the room, but something caught her attention, and she halted. “Say something to me. I'm a human like you.” Amelia muttered as he breathed in forcefully, creating a hissing-like sound. The guard neither flinched nor jerked. She waited until the guard was closer, then she grabbed his cloth loosely as tears were still dripping from her ear and she was sweating as most of the veins in her forehead came to view. “Young lady, I'm on duty, and I'm not supposed to touch you without being commanded to do so. If you don't mind, permit me to do my work diligently so that you'll hear peace of mind and I will retain my job.” The guard mumbled as he was keeping his voice lower to be certain that his boss doesn't hear his conversation with Amelia. “Can't you be of help to me? I'm languishing in misery here.” She implored him passionately. Please take your hands off my body. We're being monitored, and I've exhausted my time with you. I need to report back to duty.” He replied blatantly, not minding the fervor Amelia applied while requesting the favor from him. Amelia kept clinging her hand to his cloth, but he forcefully grabbed her hands and pushed her into the room. He managed to take her closer to the bed before pushing her gently towards the bed and hurrying out of the scene. While Amelia was maintaining the position at which she fell on the bed, she heard a cracking sound from the door after hearing it being slammed, indicating that the guard locked it just as Damon requested. “Amelia, this might be your end. But strive to live and witness the end”. She muttered to herself then grabbed the pillow and used it to wipe her tears
