Chapter One - Twilight
Twilight.....
At a park called Minsyu park in South Korea. I'm here sitting on the bench, looking far away but my mind was afloat.I only dreamed about the memories with my Korean boyfriend named Gyung-suk. The breeze is cold and I feel every inch of it in my skin. This is the park when we first met and this was also our end when we separated. I still remember clearly how our last moment ended.
"Anyeong haseyo!" Gyung-suk greeted me warmly. He smiled at me as if he dearly loved me. I will never forget those smiles, my heart just loves the way his eyes twinkles.
Even myself could not believe every time we were together. I’m a big fan of K-pop and K-dramas, and every time I see Gyung-suk she can be compared to people like them. He's handsome, tall, extremely attractive and well built body. He placed his right arm on top of my shoulder and we both stride toward the massive tree and sat under it. Like what he always do, he laid his head on my lap and he was enthusiastic telling me about the history of Korea. As he was telling the story I just stared at him and it was as if I was dreaming that I had a boyfriend like Gyung-suk.
We spent the day together until twilight. Suddenly, he said he needed to go. He helped me stand up and bid his goodbye. “Anneong!” He smiled at me and kissed me on my forehead and he turned away. I did not expect that day to be our last meeting. It happened a year ago, but the memory is still fresh on my mind. I wonder where he could have gone off to, where is Gyung-suk?
It's been over a year since I last met him.
My mother took me to Korea to study there in college, she was a contract worker there, but after Gyungsuk was missing, it happened that she was laid off from her job, because the company that she is working at was bankrupt. So we did nothing but to go back home. I continued my study here in Manila.
One day in my class.
I’m not feeling well, I always feel this way because I don’t feel like going to school. I sat at my desk and was still depressed, I still think of the memories of Gyung-suk and me.
Later, my classmate approached me.
"Kirstein! Why are you always looking so sad and looks desperate, huh?" My classmate Eumie said. I looked at her and I saw her eyebrows furrowed. It was as if I had done something wrong and she just looked at me like that. "Oh, nothing, I'm just worried about something,"
I said softly to her, while I was still depressed at my desk. "I know! It’s about Gyung-suk again? Right? That fantasy of yours!" Eumie scoffed and she crossed her arms at the same time. At very first, I thought Eumie was a true friend, I only told her about Gyungsuk. But despite my trust in her, she just laughed at me.
My classmates have always bullied me. I just kept quiet and I just ignored them. "Oh, you have to fix your hair, look at how you look?" she said to me even knowing that someone else hears. One of our classmates’ name Kate came in.
"Looks like your best-friend is sad again huh?” She said as she arrived.
"Oh, she's not my bestfriend!" Irritated Eumie said.
"Well, after class, let's eat outside, do you like to come with us Kirstein?" Kate asked.
"Kate! You already know that she doesn’t have any money to take her with us?" Eumie smirked.
"I know, I’m just kidding! Anyway, did you iron your uniform? Looks so filthy,” Kate said sarcastically and she touched my sleeve.
I did not know what I was going to excuse, actually, my father didn’t pay our electric bills, that’s why I didn’t iron my uniform. I just adjusted my sleeve.
They keep mocking me.
While we were waiting for our teacher, they managed to tease me again. After a while, my other classmates arrived too. They were happy talking and gossiping, I just kept quiet in my desk. But suddenly Kate approached me and showed my classmates, my stiff hair and tangled uniform. "Is that the one with a handsome Korean boyfriend?"
Kate said sarcastically. They laughed even more when they saw my appearance, I just stared at them and feeling helpless. When I was young, I was a ‘lame’ when called, I didn’t know how to fight back.
...
After class, I was walking alone to the bus station.
I sat in the waiting shed, soon suddenly two women sat next to me, and I heard, they’re talking Korean language.
I looked around and noticed that they were Koreans. They look so beautiful with their trendy outfit. They look like the k-pops I watch on TV. Unbeknownst to them I understood what they were talking about. I’m not serious listening. But they are talking about weird and unusual things.
"Geunjugaogo issdaneun geos-eul asibnikka?" one of them said in Korean language with her companion. "I'm excited but scared at the same time!" Said the other girl in Korean.
"Ulineun saeloun guseong-won-ieoseo ulineun museowohabnida.," Said the other.
And as I heard them, I was amazed at what they were saying, I was suddenly surprised to hear that they had mentioned the name Gyung-suk. "Ulineun joyag-eul heulliji anhseubnida. Ulineun gyeong-oesim-eul Gyung-suk moshaessda," I trembled in my seat as I heard this. I suddenly felt strange.
But I think maybe he just has the same name? In those moments I was uneasy, I listened to them carefully. A woman said she was excited to go to the Octagon club to see Gyung-suk. "What kind of club is that?" I whispered to myself, but I think it is impossible that Gyung-suk is what they are referring to, Gyung-suk is in Korea and he is missing, and how can he get here? I just shrugged at what I heard.
