CHLOE'S POV The first werewolf lunged at me and slashed at my thighs with razor-sharp claws. I fell to my knees with a gasp of pain, my body clinging to my chest. The other werewolf snarled and took a snapping bite at my arm. I dropped my bag and collapsed to the ground, gasping with agony. I had never felt pain like this before, pain that tore at my bones and left me weak and unable to fight back. The werewolves kept biting at very part of me that was open to their fangs. Hot blood slipped down my cheeks as one of them slashed at my face. Another ons smacked my head, sending it knocking into the linoleum floor of the kitchen.. I looked up at alpha Lucas in a haze of pain . He was laughing. Laughing at my misery, laughing at my pain . I felt the life draining out of me. My eyesight was blurring. My eyes were popping. I was dying. I was going to die. I looked at the child still sleeping peacefully in my hands, and a flame of hope sparked in me. I wouldn't die. I could not afford to die, not when my child's life was at risk. That hope burned in me and gave me strength. I suddenly felt super-human strength surge through me. In a single movement, I stood to my feet , flinging both werewolves across the room. They hit the opposite wall and feel to the ground, utterly dazed. I glanced at my hands, surprised. I'd only intended to push off the guards, but instead I had unleashed a superhuman strength. Then I remembered: I was a lycan. Of course, these wolves were no match for me! My hands were glowing with a strange blue aura. My skin felt uncomfortable and unnaturally warm. My heart hammered with light and power. I was powerful. I looked up at alpha Dean, who was staring at me astonished. “But…but…it can't be.” He stuttered, “Your stepfather told me—” I didn't wait for him to finish the sentence. I picked up my child and boiled out of the back door, into the waiting darkness. I could not tell how long I ran. All I knew was that I had to put as much distance as I could between Alpha Lucas and I. I dashed into the forest that surrounded the pack house. My heart pounded in my chest as i raced through its denseness, my footsteps rustling the dead leaves on the forest ground. An owl in the branches above hooted, as though it was cheering me on to freedom. The adrenaline pushing through my veins gave my legs an extra burst of speed, and I raced as though the devil himself was after me. Perhaps he was. Alpha Lucas was the special devil sent to me. I knew I couldn't afford to let my guard down. Alpha Lucas could as well be behind me now, and I hadn't fully mastered my new-found powers yet. If I faltered, he would find me and drag me back to that miserable pack house. That thought alone makes me grasp in fear. Sharp branches whipped against my arms and face , leaving behind painful scratches and nicks. Sweat trickled down my brow, mingling with blood left from my wounds. My baby weighed me down, but I clutched him to my chest , unwilling to let him go. I finally got a clearing in the forest. I leaned forward and clutched my knee with onw hand , panting heavily. I couldn't go any further without my breath first. I glanced behind me: the Alpha and the guards were no where behind me , thank the Goddess . I looked at the baby who had strangely been sleeping throughout all this. It was funny how the slightest. It was funny how the slightest noise of a door opening could wake him up, but my being attacked by the werewolf and running through the forest while holding him could not. I swept my sweaty brow, and smiled at his beautiful face, caressing it with one hand . He was worth it. He was worth all the trouble. I looked around me: the howling of Wolves had faded into the distance. Ahead of me, I could see a stream that separated alpha Lucas' pack from the next one. Once i cross that stream , I will be free from his tyranny at last. I looked at my pale, blood-stained hands. The stranger blue aura I had seen in it had gone. What had happened then ? How did it happen? All I could remember was a flash of light, and some sudden flow of strength into my limbs. The only people I heard could do things like that were… No! Surely not. It could definitely not be me. Definitely not me. The wounds on my hands and ties were stinging and burning like acid. My head was throbbing,my eye sight was still a little bit blurry. I knew this was the effect of the werewolf bite on my body ,but my spirit was fueled with hope. Only a few more steps , and I will finally be free. There was a sudden rustle in the bunches and I perked up. I clutched my son to my chest and dashed behind a cluster of bushes just as several men came into the clearing, caring a dead for them. Another man took up the rear, straddling a handsome black horse..He was bare-chested , his dark hair held up in an attractive man- burn. “Nice hunt today.” One of them grunted, and the others mumbled in assent. “Right,” another one said, and turned to the man on the horse. “Perhaps, we should pitch our camp here and continue our journey in the morning, Alpha Colton?” The man on the horse looked around warily, his eyes roaming tye surroundings. “No, I think not. I sensed something in those bushes. Something… unusual… We'll head on to the pack instead.” I watched as the men murmured in affirmation and picked up the dear. Then they started to wall out of the clearing. As they did so, I felt a spark of connection as the Alpha named Colton stopped in his tracks and started to sniff the air.” He turned his head in my direction as escorts gathered around him. “What is it ,alpha?” One of them asked. Alpha Colton waved his hands in dismissal. Then he slipped down from his horse, and began to circle in the forest, his noise in the air. My heart beat like a tribal drum as my eyes followed him with trepidation. Any moment soon and I'll be sniffed out and dragged back to that accursed pack. I knew the alpha's in these areas were a close–knit group, and this man wouldn't hesitate to hand me over to alpha Lucas once I was discovered. I shuddered at the devastating prospect. No, I thought. I couldn't let myself be dragged back there. I couldn't let myself be handed over to Alpha Lucas like a lost puppy. Who knew what that alpha would do to me and my baby once I went back to his pack? I made a move to stand and flee, but then something happened. A twig brushed my infant face, causing a painful nick, and the baby opened his eyes, startled. I could see his face slowly collapsing into a grimace of pain, and I knew anytime soon, he would let out a wail and I would be discovered. “Shh… Shh…” I tried to sush my baby, but soon began letting out soft, tearful whimpers. I glanced up at the alpha, who was a few feet away, still sniffing and frowning. I cradled the baby in my arms and hoped against hope that faith will smile on me, and my baby would quit his whimpering. But I didn't have such luck. My baby opened his toothless mouth, squizzed his face and let out one loud cry of pain that startled even me. Every single eye in the forest moved in my direction. I watched as the Alpha and all his men rushed forward to where I crouched. My heart thundered with fear as Alpha Colton reached the schrubs, and slowly pulled them aside ,revealing my hiding spot. His dark grey eyes met locked with mine , and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
