CHLOE'S POV
As our gaze locked , an inexplicable connection sparked within me. I gasped and stumbled backwards, trying to pull my gaze away. But I couldn't; I just couldn't. Not when his eyes seemed to hold the entirety of my being . In that single moment , it felt like he was the only one that mattered to me.
Perhaps he was, and I had just realized it.
For five full seconds, our gaze held.
The alpha's mouth was hanging open in surprise. It seemed he had felt what I had felt too. It was so alien, the feeling ,so unlike anything I have felt with Alpha Lucas. With Alpha Lucas , it had been one-sided and weak; he never realized that fate had bound us together. But with this man , it was different ,welcome, beautiful.
Inexplicable.
He broke eye contact first. As he slowly pulled his gaze away, something in me whimpered In protest. I wanted him to look at me again, wanted him to see the universe trapped in his eyes. But his eyes moved downward to the sleeping child in my hands and his expression morphed into confusion.
“Alpha, what is it?” One of his escorts asked again. “What did you see? Is it an enemy? Do we need to attack?”
With the confused expression still on his face, he pointed at me and the child in my arms. The other werewolves gathered around him and stared down at me for long minutes. Alpha Colton finally broke the silence.
“ Who are you and what are you doing here?” He asked. There was none of the smitten love I'd imagined I would see on his face. It was as though he was trying to hide the fact that we were mates.
“Careful.” One of the other werewolves said. “She might be human.”
“No.No I'm not.” I said hastily, getting to my feet slowly. All eyes turned to me again, and I felt the courage dying in my chest.
“Speak,” Alpha Colton urged. I raised my eyes slowly and stared into his eyes, and for the second time that night,a surge of connection sparked between us.
“I am a werewolf, like you,” I whispered.
“If you are truly a werewolf, what are you doing here then? You do realize how dangerous it is for you to be alone out here, don't you ?” The alpha asked.
“ I know.” I replied, eyes downcast. “I only hid down here because I needed protection.”
“Protection from what?”
I opened my mouth to reply but closed it again. A thought just occurred to me. What if these men were I cahoot with Alpha Dean? What if I told them all about my escape, and they dragged me back to Alpha Dean to continue my life of misery?
I knew the alpha's around these parts were a tight-knit group, and you knew they wouldn't want to anger Alpha Dean by rescuing me from the forest and taking me to their pack.
“Well…? Alpha Colton prompted.
I looked up slowly , my gaze resting upon his face. His expression of suprise had been replaced by a look of real concern, like he was truly worried that a young woman with a sucking child was all alone In this dangerous forest.
He was truly concerned about me. He looked trustworthy.
“Alpha Lucas.” I said finally in a hollow voice.
They all exchanged gloomy looks full of meaning. My heart skipped a beat. What if I had miscalculated and they were truly in liason with former mate?
“Well, this would not be the first time we have found a werewolf running away from Alpha Lucas rule of tyranny.” One of the men said with a sigh.
I summoned up courage and spoke again. “I.. I thought… I thought you were friends with the Alpha.”
“We?” Alpha Colton asked in surprise. “No, definitely not. We are from a different pack, one who has been at loggerheads with your alpha's for many years now. This is not the first time a wolf has been running away from that pack and into ours. Perhaps we can help you.” He continued. “Maybe we can take you to our alpha.”
“We shouldn't, Alpha.” One of the werewolves snarled. “She could be a spy. An impostor. You remember what happened the last time we tried to help a stranded stranger in this forest?
“I am not.” I interjected. “I promise, I am not any of those things.”
Alpha Colton narrowed his eyes suspiciously at me for a moment , trying to reach a decision. “She is not a spy,” he murmured. “We shouldn't save her.”
I could see the Alpha was itching to tell his pack members the truth. I could see it in the eyes that bored into mine, that he ached to announce that I was his mate. But it seemed something was holding him back.
Instead, he stretched out his hand to me , an intense, burning look on his face. “Come on Omega”, He whispered. “Let's get you to safety.”
The ride to Alpha Colton pack was long and hard. I rode with him on the horse, my back pressing against his chest, my baby in my arms. His own strong protective arms went around mine, shielding me, offering safety and love. I sighed in contentment as we rode to his pack . The feeling was still alien, something I had never had the luxury of feeling prior to now, and yet u welcomed it with open arms.
Anything was better than dying in the hands of Alpha Lucas and his hounds. We got to the pack in a matter of hours. As we rode through the main street, my eyes roamed around. The pack was small ,a sparse community of about a hundred werewolves.
Alpha Lucas’ pack is twice as big as this, i thought. If the alpha should choose to attack……
No , I shook the thought from my head , I wanted Alpha Lucas to be a forgotten memory, and it would remain that way.
We rode in silence until we got to the largest building in the pack. It was built with pure-white stone, adorned with white columns and an enormous front staircase. It reminded me of a bank or a temple.
Alpha Colton came out of the horse first as his men carried the deer inside. He looked up at me, the moon light turning his face pearly white..
For a second ,our gaze locked, and my world shifted in its orbit again.
He stretched out a hand to me slowly. “Take my hand.” He murmured.
Without hesitation, I slipped my right hand into his waiting one and helped him down the horse. As I got down, his hands slipped around me, keeping me from falling to the ground.
In all my years ,I'd never experienced such tenderness from anyone. Not my stepfather, nor my first mate. And here I was being treated so carefully by a complete stranger.
“You never tell me your name.” He murmured to me.
I automatically inclined my head again; I wasn't used to being talked to this way , much less by a whole alpha. “My name is Chloe.” I whispered.
“Chloe,” he echoed, tasting the words as though it held untold secrets. “Chloe Helen's Moon, did you know that? I think its a fitting name.”
“I….I guess.”
“Let's go inside.” He said, grabbing my hand. “I'm sure you must be tired. And we must discuss this new… Development between both of us.”
I knew what he meant, loud and clear, even if he was being vague about it.
We were going to talk about the mating bond between us.
Perhaps my fortune was about to change , I thought. The prospect made me dizzy with a horde of emotions.
Swallowing my terror, I followed him up the staircase to the waiting doors of the pack house. Two guards who stood on either end of the entrance bowed as we walked forward. They threw the doors open , ushering us in.
Alpha Colton led me inside the pack house by the arm, while I clutched my baby to my chest , terrified. We stepped into a large foyer, which faced a sweeping flight of stairs on the other end of the room.
The furniture was completely white, from the soft rug that graced my feet, to the large couch and the chandelier above. Even the shelves and picture frames were painted white. A grand piano stood before a pair of French doors. The pack house wasn't as large or as grand as Alpha Lucas’ had been, but it had one thing that Alpha Lucas’ lacked.
Warmth.
A football distracted me, and I turned my head in its direction.
Someone was slowly descending the staircase, frightening even from this distance. Her mere presence sent shiver after shiver down my spine, and when she spoke, all sense of warmth immediately vanished.
“Who is she?” She asked.
