The Calm Before the Storm
Three days before the warehouse became a trap, their worst nightmare, it was a sanctuary, a safe space. Though everything wasn’t yet in place, it all just felt right being there together at that time.
The penthouse apartment which had become their shelter overlooked the glittering, neon-lit skyline of the city. An empire, made entirely for one to rule and the other… well, she was never supposed to touch. But right here, tucked away from the prying eyes of the world , the dangerous politics of the mafia didn't exist.
Maya stood by the floor to ceiling glass, her fingers wrapped around a warm cup of tea, watching the rain streak down the pane. Two strong arms suddenly wrapped around her waist from behind. Dave pulled her back against his chest, burying his face into the crook of her neck. He smelled of expensive cologne, rain, and the faint, metallic scent of gunpowder and for Maya his scent was a constant reminder of the world she walked in.
"My love, you're thinking too much," Dave whispered, his voice low and raspy against her skin. His hands, usually so ruthless and hard, were incredibly gentle as he turned her around to face him.
"I'm worried Dave," Maya murmured, looking up into those dark eyes that always seem to pull her in. She reached up, her thumb tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "The tensions between your family and the alliance... it’s getting worse. If anything happens to you…"
Dave silenced her with a soft, lingering kiss that tasted like a quiet promise. Pulling away from her lips he cupped her face in his hands forcing her to look at him “Nothing is going to happen to me, to us, to what we have. I made a promise to you, one I intend to keep till the day I breathe my last.”
Maya smiled. With many thoughts pressing on her mind she pressed her forehead against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart hoping the world, Thor lives could be as steady and calm as the rhythm she listened to. She memorized the warmth of his embrace, holding him tightly as though he was so fragile and would break or fall apart if she let go.
The Raid
Three days later, the warmth of the penthouse was a distant memory. The icy concrete wall bit through the fabric of Maya’s shirt, but she barely felt it. All her senses were locked onto the man pressing her flat against the surface.
Dave.
His breath was hot against her neck, ragged and shallow from the frantic escape through the maze of the abandoned warehouse. Outside, the screech of tires and the heavy thud of combat boots echoed closer and closer. They were surrounded.
"Look at me, Maya," Dave commanded softly, his fingers gripping her jawline.
Maya looked up, tears streaming freely down her face, cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. She knew this was the end, yet her eyes searched his face, desperately hunting for the tiniest glimmer of a silver lining in the dark.
Attack…attack…attack. The warning bells rang loudly and continuously in her mind. But in that exact moment, under his intense gaze, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. The gunfire in the distance, the approaching armed men, the threat of death… it all blurred into background noise. In this tiny, fractured second, only the two of them existed.
Dave crashed his lips onto hers.
The kiss was fierce, desperate, and heavy with the terrifying finality of their situation. Maya kissed him back with a matching intensity, winding her fingers into his hair, pouring every ounce of her unspoken emotion into him.
Dave pulled back just an inch, his eyes burning with a fierce, protective light. "I love you Maya, today and always. No matter what happens always remember that. You are my world and I will always come back for you." he vowed fiercely, his voice a gravelly whisper. "I promise you, Maya... I'd always come for you."
Using the back of her palm, Maya quickly wiped away the fresh tears on her face. She didn't say a word. She just leaned up, kissing him one last time, tasting the bittersweet finality of his promise.
CRASH.
The heavy metal doors were violently pushed open, splintering against the concrete frame.
"Hands where I can see them! Ground, now!"
A group of heavily armed enemy troops marched into the room, their weapons raised and lasers targeting Dave's chest. Dave immediately threw himself in front of Maya, shielding her body with his own as they were forced to their knees.
Rough hands grabbed Dave’s wrists, forcing them behind his back. The cold click of metal handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the tense room. Another soldier grabbed Maya, slamming cuffs onto her wrists as well.
Dave struggled against his restraints, his eyes wild as he looked over at her. "Don't touch her!" he snarled at the guards. "Take me, let her go!"
Maya, still on her knees, spoke out loud, her voice remarkably calm. "What took you all so long?"
Dave froze. The frantic panic in his chest suddenly halted as he looked at Maya utterly confused. "Maya... what's going on?"
The tears were entirely gone from Maya’s face. She didn't look like a terrified girl cornered in a warehouse anymore. Slowly, a menacing smile spread across her lips.
A guard stepped up behind her. Without a word, he produced a key and unlocked Maya's handcuffs. She casually slipped her hands free, rubbing her wrists as she stood up to her full height. She looked down at Dave, her eyes cold and unreadable.
"I'm sorry it all has to go down like this, Dave," Maya said smoothly, stepping over the cuffs lying on the floor. She turned her back to him, looking directly at the lead guard. "Take him away."
Dave's mind shattered. As the guards aggressively pulled him off the ground, he refused to take his eyes off her, his breath catching in his throat. Handcuffed, bruised, and utterly defeated, he forced himself to look back at her one last time as they dragged him toward the exit.
He locked his eyes onto hers, a final devastating gaze that burned with a roaring storm of shattered love, agony, and a rising, venomous fury. For a single split second, something cracked behind Maya’s cold facade. A heavy wave of raw guilt flashed across her features, her chest tightening as she watched the man she loved get broken by her own hands. But before the emotion could even settle, it vanished. Her expression went entirely dead again, hardening into stone as fast as it had broken, leaving no trace of the girl he once knew.
He had promised he would always come for her. And as the heavy doors slammed shut behind him, leaving Maya alone in the dark, she knew that when he finally broke free, he would keep that promise.
But he wouldn't be coming back to love her.
