Chapter 8: Heart vs. Head

[PEARL] "I'm so gonna get fired," I thought to myself, my mind racing with the implications of my actions. Holding Zach back like that, it was so unprofessional. As we drove, my mind flashed back to my first day on the job, the HR officer's stern warning echoing in my mind. "Pearl, as Mr Davis' assistant , you need to maintain a professional boundary. He's the CEO, and he expects nothing but the highest level of professionalism from his employees. Don't get too close, don't get too familiar. He's a man who values control and order, and he won't hesitate to take action if he feels that's being compromised.” I remembered nodding, taking the warning to heart. I had no intention of crossing that line, of compromising my professionalism or risking my job, even though I'm in love with him. But now, as I glanced over at Zach, his face set in a determined expression, his hand gripping the steering wheel tightly, I couldn't help but wonder if I had made a mistake. Had I compromised my job by holding him back in that manner? Had I crossed a line that I shouldn't have? It was a long drive, the silence between us was oppressive, heavy with unspoken words and unresolved tension. I could feel the weight of my actions bearing down on me, the fear of consequences, the worry over Zach's countenance. His grip on the steering wheel never wavered, his eyes fixed on the road ahead, his jaw set in a determined expression. I knew that look, that intensity. It was a mix of frustration and disappointment, a sense of feeling defeated. His eyes seemed to bore into the road ahead, his jaw clenched in a silent snarl. It was as if he felt his efforts had been wasted, that everything he had worked for in bringing Caspian to justice had slipped through his fingers. And I was caught in the middle, my job, my professionalism, and my concern for Zach all tangled up in a knot of fear and worry. I was lost in my thoughts, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios and fears for my job, when Zach's deep voice cut through the silence, breaking the tension like a sudden crack of thunder. "Miss Collins," he said, his tone low and gravelly, "thank you." I turned to him, my eyes meeting his, and felt a jolt of surprise. "For what?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "For holding me back," he said, his eyes never leaving mine. "For stopping me from doing something I would have regretted." I felt a wave of relief wash over me, “You're welcome, sir.” But my mind was racing with questions. What had triggered his outburst? What secrets was he hiding? I wanted to press him for answers, to understand the history between him and Caspian, but I hesitated. I didn't want to cross the line into his personal life. Zach nodded, his eyes still intense, but his expression softer. “Take the rest of the day off, Miss Collins,” he said, his voice gentle. “You’ve earned it.” I hesitated, unsure if I should accept his offer. But Zach was already pulling over, stopping the car in front of my apartment building. “Go on, Miss Collins,” he said, his voice firm but kind. “Take a break. We will see at the office tomorrow.” I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and gratitude and watched as Zach drove away, leaving me to wonder what secrets he was hiding regarding his history with Caspian Black. Later that night, Julie and I were lounging in our pajamas, binge-watching our favorite TV show, when she suddenly turned to me with a curious expression. "Pearl, can I ask you something?" she said, her eyes sparkling with intrigue. "Sure, what's up?" I replied, pausing the TV. "I've noticed you've been really stressed out lately, and I'm guessing it has something to do with work," Julie said, her brow furrowed. "Is everything okay with your boss?" I sighed, feeling a flutter in my chest. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just a lot of pressure, that's all." Julie raised an eyebrow. "Pearl, you're a terrible liar. What's really going on?" I hesitated, unsure of how to share my feelings. But Julie's gentle tone put me at ease, and I found myself opening up in a way I never thought possible. "Julie, it's just...my boss, Zach...I don't know, he's just really intense and sometimes I feel like I'm walking on eggshells around him," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Julie's eyes lit up with understanding. "I think I see. And how do you feel about him, Pearl?" I blushed, feeling my heart race. "I...I think I might have deep feelings for him, Julie." Julie's face lit up with excitement. "Oh, Pearl! That's amazing! You have to tell him!” "I know, I know," I said, shaking my head. "But it's not that simple. He's my boss, Julie. And even if he felt the same way, which I highly doubt, it would be a total disaster. I could lose my job, or worse, ruin our professional relationship." Julie nodded understandingly. "I get it. But Pearl, you can't keep your feelings bottled up forever. Maybe you should try talking to him, see how he feels. You never know, he might surprise you." I sighed, feeling a mix of anxiety and hope. "I don't know, Julie. I need some time to think about it.” Julie nodded and put her arm around me. "Take all the time you need, Pearl. But remember, life is short, and you should take a chance on love when you can." We sat there in silence for a moment, watching the TV as the characters navigated their own complicated relationships. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be honest with Zach, to see if there was a chance for us. But for now, I just wasn't sure if I was ready to take that leap.
