Chapter 7: A Lead Gone Cold

1038 Words
[ZACH] I exited the police station with a sense of triumph. The inspector's background investigation into Jerry Jenkins had yielded a significant discovery. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of constant communication between Jenkins and Caspian Black. While their call records showed nothing incriminating, the frequency and secrecy of their interactions raised suspicions. It was clear that they were working together, and this connection was the key to unraveling the mystery. Jerry Jenkins' arrest was the pivotal moment in our quest to bring down Caspian Black. With this new evidence, we finally had a lead to pursue. I retrieved my phone and dialed Pearl's number. "Miss Collins, we've got a new lead in the case," I said. "Yes, sir?" she replied, her voice cautious. "We've arrested Jerry Jenkins, and we're bringing Caspian Black in for questioning tomorrow. Can you meet me at the station at 9 am?" I asked. "Yes, sir. I'll be there." "I expect you to be prepared, Pearl. This is a crucial moment in the case." "Yes, sir. I understand." I hung up the phone, my mind already focused on the next step in the investigation. The following day, I woke up early, feeling a sense of determination wash over me. Today was the day we would finally bring Caspian Black in for questioning. I headed to the police station, my mind already focused on the task at hand. When I arrived, Pearl was already there, looking a bit nervous. Detective Mitchell greeted us and began briefing us on the latest developments in the case. Once Detective Mitchell was satisfied that she had everything she needed, she headed to the interrogation room. The Jenkins brothers were already there, looking smug and arrogant. Caspian Black walked in a few minutes later, a smirk on his face. Pearl and I observed from the viewing room, eager to see the outcome of the investigation. Detective Mitchell began the questioning. "So, Caspian, we've got evidence linking you to the poisoning. Care to explain?" Caspian shrugged. "I don't know what you're talking about.” And that's when the charade began. The Jenkins brothers vehemently denied any involvement with Caspian in the whole charade, and Caspian himself claimed he was innocent. I knew it was all a lie, but without concrete evidence, we couldn't hold him. As the questioning continued, my frustration grew. The Jenkins brothers' alibis seemed airtight, and Caspian's smug smile was starting to get under my skin. Just when Detective Mitchell thought she was making progress, Jerry Jenkins dropped a bombshell. "I just felt like spraying that substance in the elevator to see who would be the victim. No big deal." Pearl and I exchanged a stunned glance No big deal? I slammed my fist against the table, making Pearl jump. “Unbelievable!” I mouthed, my voice muffled by the glass. But before I could even process my emotions, Detective Mitchell walked in and delivered the final blow. "Mr. Davis, we have to let Caspian go. We don't have enough evidence to hold him." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. We had worked so hard to bring Caspian down, and now he was walking free. The thought of it was infuriating. As I seethed with frustration, Caspian had the nerve to place a hand on my shoulder, his eyes gleaming with mockery. He leaned in close, “You think you can scare me? I’ve been in this game longer than you. But I’ll give you a piece of advice: walk away. This isn’t a battle you can win.” My anger boiled over, and I felt a fierce urge to punch him square in the face. My fist clenched at my side, my arm tensing with the effort of restraint. But I didn't restrain myself. I took a step forward, my eyes blazing with fury, my face inches from Caspian's. I was about to launch myself at him, to tackle him to the ground and unleash all my pent-up rage. But just as I was about to explode, I felt soft arms wrap around my biceps, her soft body pressed into mine, a calming presence in the storm of my anger. Her fingers digging in with a reassuring pressure. Her touch was like a cool breeze on a summer day, soothing my frazzled nerves and calming my racing heart. I felt a surge of gratitude towards her, thankful for her intervention. Her calm and composed demeanor was a stark contrast to my own fiery temper, and it helped to bring me back down to earth. As I looked into her eyes, I saw a deep concern and understanding or was that fear? She knew me, knew my limits, and knew exactly when to intervene. Her gaze was like an anchor, grounding me in the moment and preventing me from doing something I would regret. I felt my tension ease, my muscles relaxing as Pearl's calmness seeped into me. Her touch was a reminder that I wasn't alone. I took a deep breath, feeling my anger dissipate, and nodded in appreciation. Her grip on my biceps loosened, but she didn't let go, keeping a steady hold on me until she was sure I was under control. As I looked over at Caspian, I saw a mixture of surprise and amusement on his face. His eyes were still gleaming with mockery, but there was a hint of unease behind them. He seemed to be reevaluating me, realizing that I wasn't as easy to provoke as he had thought. His smirk had faltered for a moment, and I could see a glimmer of concern beneath his confident exterior. He seemed to be thinking, "Maybe I've underestimated this guy." But as quickly as it had appeared, the concern vanished, replaced by his usual arrogance. He knew I was a force to be reckoned with, and he was adjusting his strategy accordingly. Caspian, still trying to get a rise out of me, sneered, "You're not even a real threat, Zach. You're just a nuisance.” I didn't react. I didn't even flinch. I just turned to Pearl and nodded. "Let's go.” We walked to the parking lot, got in the car, and I drove away without a word.
