I woke to find Rory spooning me. Cute, or it would be if I just meet the guy, Roarke was already up and moving around and from the smell of it making breakfast. Score that smelled like bacon! I push Rory off me and sit up
"What the hell man?!" I ask with sleep still heavy in my voice. "I hope you just rolled over and cuddled the warm thing or I'm going to hurt you first." Rory now deprived of his cuddle buddy opened one multifaceted eye and looked at me.
"You were so warm." He purrs. Nasty that's what that is.
"Get a grip, Rory," Roarke says. "She's here to save the world not spoon you."
"So what are you two anyway?" I ask knowing that I may not want the answer.
"He's a werewolf," Roarke said pointing a cooking spoon at Rory. " And I'm a vampire." he turns to look at me, "But I think you already knew what I was." he smiled showing off those pointy teeth again.
"Cool cool and what's the relationship here?" I ask stretching.
"Partners in crime," Rory says pushing his hair out of his eyes. Now that he's in the light or what little light there is in the shack, I can see he's got soft-looking blonde gray hair. It looks good on his boyish face, Roarke is more of a manly man sort, like tall and very muscled, but Rory is leaner and a little shorter but still taller than my 5 foot 7 self.
"BREAKFAST!" Roarke calls and we each get a plate of eggs and bacon, though I know these are not chicken eggs cause of the strange color, they're teal, and I'm not going to ask what they are. They still taste like eggs. And f**k bacon is bacon. I don't question the rules of the world I've found myself in. We eat in relative silence, only the scraping of silverware on plates is heard. Roarke didn't eat anything but then that seems on par with what I know about vampires, but if he thinks I'm gonna let him sink his fangs into me, he's dead wrong.
"Ok so how far to this base of yours?" I ask putting my plate aside after a second helping. I was full but that wasn't going to last and I knew it, I guess the best thing about being a bigger girl is that with all this power returning to me I will lose some of my weight but it's not going to be there forever and at some point, I might need to drain something of energy, like our vampire friend but without the blood-drinking part. If this place was too far away I wasn't sure if I could get by on what I have alone. I don't too take the energy of something else but it's better than passing out and being unable to defend myself from whatever might come sniffing around.
"It's not far maybe half a day," Roarke replies. "We should make it well before night. And..."
I cut him off, "And we don't want to get caught out after nightfall, right?" He smiles and nods.
"You sure she's not from here?" Rory asks eyeing me. I give him a sweet smile, causing him to stiffen.
Also that smell from before? Yeah, it's stronger now and I rather like it. I can't wait to see what is causing it. I take a deep breath of it letting it wash over my senses. I wonder if the books about werewolves giving off special scents for their mates are true. Maybe the reason I'm smelling this wonderfully yummy scent is that my mate is out there somewhere or maybe he's closer than I think, I glance at Rory and wonder if the smell is coming from him but I'd rather avoid walking over and sniff him. It might be rude and well I just got here.
"Ok Savior and Rory, let's go." Roarke says making for the door.
I was going to ask if that was a good idea, but Roarke opened the door causing pale sunlight to spill over his face, and to my surprise, he didn't burst into flames so I guess that's one we got wrong. I stand and follow out the door.
Rory grins at me. "He's a different breed of Vampire. His mother was a... " Roarke growls at the comment and glares daggers at Rory, who in turn just puts up his hands in defeat. "Sorry mate, I didn't think you'd mind." Roarke huffs and closes the door behind him.
"We have a hike ahead of us, so let's be on our way." Roarke says taking the lead, with me in the middle and Rory at the rear.
The morning is clear for a foggy one and the sun hardly hits the ground but you can see it behind the clouds.
This is gonna suck in these shoes, flip flops are not made for hiking, at least I'm wearing jeans and a loose tank top. Once I get my wings though I'm gonna need something new to wear. Maybe I can make new clothes when that happens. Getting my wings back should be close to the last thing I get power-wise, so maybe by then my ability to change on the fly will come back. I sure hope so, I do not want to see what they do to make clothes fit over wings.
At least it's cool here, it would suck if it was hot, though this is a moor, so humidity might be a problem, But that's a problem for future me. Right now I'm on a nice morning walk in a meadow with some very nifty-looking flowers. These were like field flowers from Earth but they were in neon shades of colors. LIke that hot pink, bright you always wanted to try as an eyeshadow but never had the courage to and the bright purple of a sign. They were awesome to look at, but things that bright usually are to keep things from eating them, so I don't touch them.
At about midday we stop for field rations, nothing fancy just some dried meats and crackers with water but it helps. We keep moving and I keep from bitching cause Roarke says we're close. Soon a small castle comes into view. Yeah, a f*****g castle.
At the gates, Roarke speaks to someone who doesn't look like a guard and he, in turn, gets the gate up.
"Here we are, Savior," Roarke says. "Welcome to the Keep." He leads us inside and I'm starting to get the feeling that a lot of people have been waiting for me as there are eyes on my every move. "I'll show you to a room then you can get out of the otherworldly clothes and into some that stand out less." He says eyeing me. I shrug. "Then we'll have a little meeting and introduce you to everyone and then dinner." I nod, deciding to keep my mouth shut as it could get me in trouble. Well here goes nothing, time to start saving a world.
