There came a tapping, scratching at my window. I rolled over and tried to ignore it, but it would not let up. Whatever was out there was intent on getting my attention. My eyes protested being opened, this early, and my body felt like a glowstick that would c***k but refused to glow. I groaned and with some willpower dragged myself to the window. I pulled the curtain back and screamed like a little girl. There was a MASSIVE bat-like creature outside the window, scratching and tapping with its claws the size of my fingers. I stumbled back and scrambled away from the window as Roarke, shirtless I might add, and Rory burst into the room.
"What the actual f**k is that?!" I scream, still on my butt on the floor. Some savior I am, on the floor hiding behind the menfolk. Roarke started to the window and Rory helped me to my feet.
"It's a familiar," Rory said making sure to keep me behind him. "The Overlord bastard must have sent it." He growls. Roarke throws open the window and the large bat enters and he f*****g purrs at the thing. "Oh, it that yours?" Rory c***s an eyebrow. The bat thing landed on the floor and oh holy crap it was huge. I mean it's ears nearly touched the ceiling., I have no idea how it even fit in the window.
"She's from my inside man." Roarke said rubbing things ears.
"That's all great and good, but why did it come to my window?" I inquire moving from behind Rory.
"She," Roarke said placing emphasis on the gender of the bat, " And she comes to the person with the most power in the area, and that used to be me." He explains. " She must have been drawn to you or she wanted pets and came to the nearest window." He shrugged.
"Uh-hu, that's a flimsy explanation, my dude." I ooze at him. "She just happened to be attracted to me cause of my power, or she wanted pets instead of doing her job which I assume was to bring intel from the inside."
"She has needs, and wants too." He cooed at the bat. That was just creepifiying. "She won't bite." Roarke says as he watches me eyeball the giant bat sitting in my room.
I creep closer to the giant bat, she looks soft and I can't say that I haven't wanted to pet one before, back on Earth. They always looked like little friends to me, so this seemed like a perfect time to fulfill a little dream, even if she was well man-sized. Roarke stifled a giggle as I inched closer to the giant bat. "What's her name?" I asked reaching out to touch her. She was so soft and she leaned into my hand and I don't know purred I guess if bats do that, I'm not sure, but she made cute noise as I ran my fingers through her fur.
"Lady." Roarke said stepping back to let me get closer to her. He untied a scroll from her leg and I fell in love.
"Can I have one?" I asked, completely bewitched by Lady. I want one of my own so bad.
Roarke smiled and shook his head. "I'm afraid there aren't many of her kind left. The Overlord either killed them off or enslaved them." That sucked, the idea of having a pet bigger than me was kind of cool, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. "Lady, come on let's get you to the tower so you can rest and be on your way. " Lady groused at him. "She wants to stay with you." Roarke said shaking his head.
"As much as I'd like that Lady," I say petting her behind the ears, "I don't think you'll be comfortable in here." She shook herself out and made a small noise that made my heart tighten. "Maybe I can see you before you go." She seemed to accept that and took off out the window again. Now that I look at the window, it was BIG. It could easily fit Lady with her only needing to fold her wings to get in. Now that she was outside she spread her massive wings and took off for the tower.
"I should go make sure she's settled in and doesn't try to come back." Roarke says, turning to leave with the scroll in hand. Rory only gives me a smile and closes the door behind them. I sigh and head back to bed. It was still before dawn and I was tired but I got to pet the bat and that was worth waking up. Now that I think about it Roarke's explanation made some sense, my power must be growing faster than I realize and that's what drew Lady to me, or she really did just want pets and came into the first window she saw. Not that it mattered. I crawled back into bed and pulled the covers to my chin. I settled back into the bed.
The dawn came too soon after getting back into bed. I groaned and pulled the covers over my head. "Five more minutes." I try to tell the sun, but it wasn't listening. With a massive sigh, I throw off the covers and haul my ass out of bed. I wasn't ready to be up and I didn't know what the rules were around here, so I thought I should get dressed. So I throw on my new clothes and open the door to find Marie about to knock. "Good morning." I smile at her.
"I came to get you up and ready, but I see you beat me to it." She smiled back softly. "Let me show you to breakfast." She turned and made sure I was following before taking off down the hall. Too many turns to count and a staircase later, we were in the Great Hall. I don't think I could learn the layout of this place, but I knew I would have to sooner or later.
Breakfast was bacon, eggs, sausage, and biscuits. Alright, I could get used to meals I didn't have to make myself. I might miss cooking sooner or later but for now, I was glad someone else got up before everyone else and made the meals. I sat in the same chair as last night and helped myself to food. Rory was there playing with his baby, while Maire made sure that the platters were full. Other people were scattered around starting their days. I smelled the coffee before I saw it and I claimed a cup as soon as I was able and still be polite.
I looked around and wished someone would talk to me, but I was new and well I might not be staying here after I save the world, maybe it would be good not to get attached. Roarke swept into the room, this time he had a s**t and black pants, with boots that shined in the pale sun. I wondered why it was that a vampire could be out in the sun, but then I remembered that Rory said Roarke was a special kind of vampire. I wanted to know more but I don't think now is the time to ask. Maybe it was something I didn't want to know. Roarke takes a seat next to me and grabs a goblet with what I assume is blood in it. I mean he is a vampire, that's kind of their thing. He takes note of me staring and smiles flashing me those fangs again.
"It's donated." He says taking a drink. Yup information I wasn't sure I wanted. "I only take from those willing to give." His voice was thick with promise and parts of me were taking that promise. Nope not today, lady parts, we are NOT baning the leader of the resistance, even if he was totally hot.
"I figured as much," I shrug and take another bite of bacon. " I didn't think you were the type to take without asking." He laughed and only nodded. "I mean if you did take without asking you'd be no better than the guy you need me to stop." He stopped laughing and his eyes grew dark.
"You are right there." He said "I'd never be so greedy,"
"What's the plan for today?" I ask between sips of coffee.
"We're going to see where you need to strengthen your skills and go from there." He takes another drink."Fighting, magic, and the basics. Once we know where you are naturally, we can make a plan to teach you the rest you'll need to know for the fights ahead." He finishes his drink. "Once you've finished breakfast, we'll head to the training field."
Great, now I get to perform like a monkey after stuffing my face. "Well," I say pushing the now empty plate away, and finishing my coffee," Let's go."
