I Hate Hospitals
“Hello?”
“Hello sir. You are in the emergency contacts of the owner of this phone. Can you tell us who the owner is? Also, we need you to come to the hospital.”
“Her name is Serina Vargas. I’m her father and yes I’m on my way.”
*********************************************
I was standing outside of work when I saw Jordan arguing with an officer. I sprinted over to him and wrapped my arms around him and started balling my eyes out. He pulled me closer to his body and was suffocating me but I didn’t care.
“It’s okay officer.”
“Alright.”
“Thank you.”
We walked to the front of the store and sat on the curb waiting for another officer to take my statement.
“What happened?”
“Serina. She showed up here and she was losing it Jordan. She brought a gun and was about to shoot me.”
He stared at me for a second then pulled me closer to him.
“Then?”
“She started talking about how she wanted everything I have and talking about how she wants you. But then when she was about to pull the trigger, Robbie walked out of his office and…”
I started balling my eyes out again. I've never been more scared in my life than that moment. There were a few officers that walked over to me and Jordan asking me about what happened, why it happened and just a lot of other questions.
“Do you want us to call your parents?”
“No, I moved out a few months ago.”
“Okay. But you are a minor so I legally have to call your parents.”
“My father has no legal rights over me and I have a restraining order on my mother.”
The officers stared at me for a moment.
“Calling my parents is not necessary. I have my boyfriend with me and we live together. The closest people I have to parents are the owner of this store and his parents.”
They nodded their heads. After talking with them for a little while longer, Jordan drove us over to his parents house. As soon as we pulled into the driveway, Jordan’s parents almost tackled me.
“Oh thank the Lord you’re okay.”
Rosa grabbed my face in her hands and stared at me for a moment.
“Why are you glowing?”
I looked at her confused.
“You have this, glow about you. Almost like you’re preg…”
My eyes got wide.
“f*****g Hell Jordan you got her pregnant!”
I looked at Jordan and he looked terrified. Rosa took her shoe off and started beating him with it while I stood there in shock. I looked at Jordan’s dad and he was standing there laughing.
“!eres tan idiota! !Ustedes son niños y están dejando embarazada a esta pobre niña! Ahora ella está pegada a ti de por vida tu-”
“Mi amor! I think he understands now.”
She stopped beating him and looked at us. She pointed the shoe at me and I put my hands up.
“You. You are going to get the same treatment after you have this baby.”
My eyes got wide but she turned around and cracked Jordan in the back of the head with the shoe one last time before putting it back on. I couldn’t help but to chuckle a little bit about that.
“Can we go inside now?”
“Yes.”
We walked inside and went to the kitchen. We sat down at the island and I waited to get grilled for this.
“Sophia, are you okay?”
I looked at them.
“I’m still in shock. I’m still processing what happened.”
“I understand that. Do you want something to eat or something to drink?”
“No I’m okay. I want to go to the hospital though. I want to see how she’s doing and to see if the baby is okay.”
Jordan looked at me in shock.
“You want to see how the girl who just pulled a gun out at you, is doing?”
“She’s going through something. There seems to be something going on in her head. I don’t know what it is but I can just tell.”
“Sophia I don’t-”
“Jordan, you do not control me. I want to see if she is okay so I’m going to go see how she’s doing.”
I started walking outside when I felt Jordan’s arms around my waist. He was holding me but wasn’t trying to stop me.
“I just got you back. I don’t think going there is a good idea.”
“I at least want to talk to her family and tell them that I don’t hate her. I just want to see if she’s okay.”
He sighed. I turned around and looked at him.
“I will be okay. You can come with me.”
I gave him a kiss then wrapped my arms around him.
“Fine. I am staying by your side the whole time and when I say we leave, we go.”
“Okay.”
We got in the car then went to the hospital. He held my hand the whole drive there and when we walked inside. I saw Serina’s sister and walked up to her.
“Hey Camila.”
She looked up at me and threw her arms around me.
“I am so sorry for what happened.”
I wrapped my arms around her.
“It’s okay. I don’t hate her for what happened. I’m more worried than anything.”
Camila pulled away and looked at me.
“She pulled a gun on you Sophia.”
“I know. I was there.”
“How could you not hate her?”
“I think there’s something wrong with her. Maybe a mental disorder? I don’t know but there is just something off and when someone has a mental disorder, they can't control it. So how can I hate someone for something that they can't control?”
Camilia stared at me for a moment.
“I didn’t think about that.”
A man walked over to Camilia and whispered something to her.
“I’m sorry, this is our father, Val. Dad this is Sophia Jones and her boyfriend Jordan Hernandaz. Sophia was the girl-”
“The girl that you sister wanted to kill.”
He looked at me for a second. Studying me and my body language.
“Sir, I didn’t wish this on her. I just wanted to see if she was okay and wanted to say that I don’t hate her or anything.”
“Call me Val. And why don’t you hate her?”
“I think there is something wrong mentally. I’m not making assumptions but there are times where there is something wrong and you cannot tell from looking at her but by her actions. So I can't hate her for something that she cannot control.”
He nodded his head. He stuck his hand out for me to shake it.
“Sophia, I think you are onto something. I’ll ask the doctors to do a scan on her brain.”
I nodded my head.
“Have you gotten any news from the doctors?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Okay. I’m going to stay if that’s okay with you.”
“That’s fine.”
He smiled then walked away. Camilia’s phone started going off so she walked away to take the phone call. I sat down then Jordan squatted in front of me and put his hands on my knees.
“Do you want me to get a doctor for you? We need to see if the baby is okay.”
I was about to answer but Camilia walked up and heard what he said.
“What?! Serina pulled a gun at a pregnant girl?!”
Their father, family, and friends walked over.
“Sophia, is this true?”
Her father looked at me with concern.
“Yes, I am pregnant. But it’s nothing to-”
“Don’t start. We live by a code and she broke that code.”
“It’s really okay-”
“Did she know that you are pregnant?”
“She tried to blackmail me with it but seriously-”
“Sophia, you do not have to explain anything to us. She broke the gang code. You do not attempt to kill someone that has a baby on the way or cause them harm or else you are out.”
I stared at them because I knew what that meant. She either has to die or her tattoo has to be cut off with a rusty knife.
“Val, it’s really okay. Like I said, there is something wrong with her so instead of lashing out at her you should be there for her and do anything you can to help her. Because showing her support right now is important for her mentally! You have no clue how it feels to a little girl when her whole family turns their back on her when she needs them the most Val!”
Jordan grabbed my face softly to calm me down.
Val said, “That wasn’t entirely about Serina, was it? That was a personal-”
“No it wasn’t. It is important to a girl that her family supports her when she needs it the most and right now, she needs you to help her instead of abandoning her, Val.”
“Did she just cut the boss off and call him by his name?”
“She has balls of steel for that.”
He clenched his jaw.
“Don’t you cut me off again.”
I stood up.
“Like you did me?”
“Watch your tone little girl.”
“Little girl? Who do you think gave Serina those bruises? Who kept sending her to the hospital? And her little boyfriend?”
He c****d his eyebrow.
“Is that a threat?”
“Take it how you want but you don’t want to be disrespected by me, don’t disrespect me.”
He chuckled.
“You have a mouth on you.”
“You have no clue.”
He looked at Jordan.
“How do you deal with this?”
“Honestly, I love it. It’s hysterical.”
I looked at him.
“I'm going to find it hysterical when you’re sleeping on the couch.”
Val started laughing.
“Damn, she has you under her thumb kid.”
“Yup, I love her.”
Val turned to me again.
“Have you ever considered being in a gang?”
“No.”
“Would you like to be in-”
“No, I know what that includes and I want nothing to deal with that life.”
“Again, don’t cut me off.”
“Again, I don’t care.”
One of his boys pulled back his blazer revealing a gun.
“Tell your little lap b***h to put his heat away before I shove it up his ass so far he tastes the gunpowder.”
He stepped at me and Jordan got in front of me. Val looked at his boy and he stepped off.
“Remember, she’s pregnant.”
“That doesn’t mean anything. I will still beat his-”
“Sophia you need to stop now before I personally fold your little ass up and take you home.”
“Fight me.”
Jordan slowly turned to face me.
“Don’t start with me.”
Val crossed his arms and shook his head at us.
“Teenagers.”
The guys behind him started chuckling.
“Sophia, if you ever change your mind, you are welcome. We need more people like you.”
“People like me?”
“Well you’re from the hood right?”
“Kankakee.”
“I could tell. You sound like it. We need more people that aren’t afraid of who’s in charge and is always challenging everyone.”
“Look, my older brother was forced to join a gang to take care of us. He sold his soul and I’m not doing that. There is no chance that I will do the same.”
“I understand. But we aren’t like that, we are a family. We take care of each other and we aren’t like these little kids round here that shoot anything that isn’t their gang’s colors.”
“I get that, but my answer is still no.”
“I respect that.”
They walked away and Camilia stared at me with pure shock on her face.
“What?”
“You seriously don’t know what you just did?”
“I turned down the offer to join a gang?”
“Sophia, you just turned down a gang leader.”
I stared at her to see if she were joking. I looked at Jordan.
“You’re kidding right?”
“No. My father is the leader of Les Lions Noirs.”
“The Black Lions?”
“Yes.”
I started feeling lightheaded. I sat down and I couldn’t process everything that had just happened.
“Jordan can you go find a doctor?”
“Yes, I’ll be right back.”
He took off running to find a doctor then Camilia sat next me.
“How far along are you?”
“A month.”
“So you’re early, early.”
“Yeah. I can't lose this baby.”
“You’re a kid.”
“I’ve wanted a kid so I can prove that I am a better parent than the people who raised me. I never want my baby to go through what I did.”
She nodded her head.
“That’s why you don’t want to be in a gang.”
“Yes.”
“We really are a family. All of those men.” She pointed at the men with Val. “They were all on the streets with nothing going for them. My father took them in and gave them somewhere to stay, food, clothes, and put them to work. They are loyal to him because he treats them like family.”
I nodded my head.
“I get that, I really do, but you can't convince me. I don’t want that life for my kid.”
Before she could talk Jordan walked over.
“I got a doctor. She’s waiting for us.”
I stood up then Camilia did so I gave her a hug.
“Text me if you get an update while im gone.”
“I will.”
Jordan and I walked away and to the room where the doctor was going to do the scan. I sat down while Jordan paced around the room.
“Babe, sit down. You’re going to cause my anxiety to spike.”
“I’m sorry. I’m just scared.”
“I know baby. Just please sit down.”
“Okay.”
He sat down and we waited for the doctor. She finally walked in and we talked about what’s been going on. She started the process so I reached my hand over to Jordan so he could hold my hand. The jell was really cold but when she put the scanner to my stomach it stopped.
“See here?”
“Yes.”
“That’s your baby. Everything looks normal and it looks like it’s growing at a normal rate.”
“So my baby is okay?”
“Yes, your baby is doing fine and is growing at a healthy rate.”
I took a deep breath and looked at Jordan.
“You are a month and a half along. Do you want to set an appointment for you to come in for another check up?”
“Yes.”
We set a date and walked back to the waiting room. I told Camilia that the baby is okay and she calmed down a little bit. We waited for the doctor to come back with the news telling us what’s going on with Serina. Jordan sat down then pulled me on his lap then he pulled me closer to him so my head was resting on his shoulder.
“I’m scared.”
“Me too Sophia.”
“Should I call Robbie and see how he’s doing?”
“Yeah.”
I got up and walked outside. I dialed Robbie’s number and waited for him to pick up.
“Hello?”
“Hey Robbie. How are you?”
“I’m still processing everything. She was going to kill you and your baby Sophia I didn’t know what else to do-”
“Slow down. Robbie, you did the right thing. I’m with her family at the hospital.”
“You’re what?”
“I know, but I feel like this is all my fault so I am going to do everything in my power to try to make things right.”
“It’s not your fault Sophia. She is having a psychotic breakdown and is taking it out on you because are a easy person for her to blame right now. This is years and years of anger that has been kept inside of her and she is finally letting it out but at the wrong person.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“Robbie, when did you get so wise on me?”
“I’ve always been an old wise man, I just never got to show it.”
I smiled.
“Well, I’m just glad that you’re okay and if you need anything just call me alright?”
“I will. Thank you.”
“Always.”
I hung up and walked back inside. I saw Jordan standing there talking with Val so I walked over to them.
“What’re you two chatting about?”
“Nothing really. Mainly what Serina was doing.”
“I know. If I could have just done something-”
“You don’t think this is your fault do you?”
“It is.”
Val looked at me.
“Sophia, none of this is your fault. You just so happen to be the person she is directing her anger towards.”
I was about to argue with him when a doctor walked over to us.
