Chapter 1
"And when she's walkin she's lookin so fineee, she says I'm not so tough. Just because, I'm in love with an up-town girl. She's my up-town girl. Dontcha know I'm in love with an up-town girl, my up-town girl" Jesse Katsoplis croons into the mic as he plays his guitar.
I shake the tambourine. Then croon in the mic as I was told to do. Then the band finishes. We had a gig here at the Smash Club the next night. So, we came up here to have a little jam session. Jesse was my band leader.
I was a back up singer. Along with my friend Barbie Joneson. Jesse's girlfriend Rebeca Donaldson was seated at the table nearby with her friend and mine Danny Tanner. I loved being on stage. Dancing. Singing. I felt so free. Carefree. And having fun.
"That is a wrap guys! We are ready to party tomorrow night!" Jesse informs the band. "You sound great" he promises us.
"How was I? Did I hit to high?" I worry. I valued his opinion. He was always helping me grow as a singer.
He nods. He slicks his dark thick black hair back with his hand and out of his face. "You were perfect" he tells me. "But Desiree you were a little flat tonight" he warns our third backup singer.
I did not know Desiree Craves well yet. They just hired her in the band.

"Sorry boss man. I have a bit of a sore throat today. My daughter got me sick" Desiree tells us.
"Alright. Do you still want to sing tomorrow?" he asks her.
"Of course," says Desiree. "I have been guzzling down tea and lemon water all week to get better"
"Alright" Jesse says. "We will see you here same time tomorrow night. Please meet us here early though. About six" Jesse orders us. "before the crowds come in"
"Got it boss" Barbie answers back.
We hop off the stage. Jesse goes over to tend to Becky. I feel someone tap me on the shoulder. I turn around to see band member Stephan Holden. He smiles at me.
Stephan was a good-looking guy. But he was not for me. I was hung up on someone I could not have. Jesse. Not that I should even be dating right now. My life was a huge mess. A mess no one but myself could clean up.

"Hey, I wanted to talk to you" Stephan begins to say.
"Oh, what about?" I ask.
"You sound amazing. Your voice is really something" he brags on me.
I blush. "Thanks" I say.
"Well I wanted to ask you, ask you if you would care to go get a cup of coffee. Go on a date with me?" he asks me. "I asked Jesse he told me you were single" he says. "I am single to"
"I know. But I am not ready to date. Or interested in being in a relationship right now. We can hang out sometime. But as friends. Sorry" I say to him.
He looks bummed. He runs his fingers in his long blond hair. A Nelson brother wanna be. "It is fine. I had to take a shot. You are a stunning creature Blair" he says to me sweetly.
"Thanks" I giggle.
He wanders away looking down in the dumps.
"What was that about? Did Stephan ask you on a date?" asks Barbie curiously.
"He is not what I am into" I tell her. "I am not wanting to date. I am focused on my music right now" I explain to her.
"I wish he would have asked me out. I would have said yes", she tells me.
"You have a thing for Stephan?" I ask.
She nods. "I have for a few weeks now. All the guys have eyes for you Blair" she reminds me.
I am really blushing now. "No, they do not. Not all the guys" I sigh.

I glance over at Jesse who was hanging on Becky's every word. And he was laughing and smiling at her. My heart aches. Wishing it was me his attention held. But I was not his. And he was not mine. He would never be mine. He belonged to Becky.
"I can talk to Stephan if you want. I think you both would make a cute couple" I say to Barbie.
"Really? You would do that for me? Think I have a shot?" she worries.
"You are beautiful. Of course, you do" I promise her.
"Thanks that means the world to me coming from you" Barbie gushes. She hugs me. "Thank you" She tells me.
"I would do anything for my friends" I remind her with a grin.
"Hey, Blair, come here please!" Jesse calls out to me. He waves me over.
I sigh. I jog over to their table. "What is going on boss man?" I ask him.
"Becky has some news she wants to tell you about" Jesse explains.
"What can I do for you Becky?" I ask.
Becky was nice. But I did not like her. I thought she was always trying to change Jesse. If you loved someone you would not always try to change them. You would love them for who they were.
Jesse was always bending over backwards to please Becky. Little miss perfect. Becky came from a well to do family out in Colorado. Little do they all know I was ten times richer than Becky would ever dream to be!
And if I was with Jesse there was nothing, I would change about him!

"I have some news. A friend of mine was on the show this morning. They are looking for a new lead girl singer in their band. Are you interested?" Becky asks me. "I can give you the information if you want" she offers.
"That is really sweet of you. But no, I am not interested" I tell her. "I like the band I am in now" I say.
Jesse takes me aside. "But Blair you have a gift. I am the lead singer in this band. You could be a lead in your own band! You are talented" he says to me.
I blush as his warm hand rest on my arm still. I remove my arm from his grasp. "Thanks Jesse but no" I say. "I am happy where I am. Okay?" I say. "Drop it okay?" I warn him.
"Sorry" he says softly.
"No worries. We are cool. See you tomorrow night" I tell him.
He nods then wanders back to Becky.
Becky heads over to me.
• ❤︎ •• ❤︎ •
"Hey, I did not mean to upset you" she tells me. "I am really sorry if I had"
"No problem Becky you did not know. Jesse thinks I could make it as a lead singer. I could if I wanted to. But the thing is I do not want to. And I told him that. I wish he would respect that and drop it" I explain to her. "I know he means well" I sigh.
"You are very talented. He just did not want your talent to go to waste" says Becky tells.
"I better get going. It has been a long night" I tell Becky as I glance over at the clock on the wall. I did not like talking to Becky. Not unless I had to.
"Oh sure. See you tomorrow night" she answers.
"You will be at the gig tomorrow?" I ask her.
She nods. "I am trying to be supportive of Jesse. Trying. Though I do not get why he is into these smelly dark smoking clubs" she mutters. "I would rather be anywhere else. I love Jesse's music. I know he has what it takes to make it. But it is the same thing every weekend" she grumbles.
I cross my arms. I did not like where this was going. "What would you like to do on the weekend besides the Smash Club?" I ask her. "This club is fun"
"It can be for the first time. But over and over again?" she huffs out. "Jesse could be playing at bigger and better places" she tells me.
"Maybe one day he will be. Things take time" I remind her. "Have faith in Jesse and the band"
"I will try" she says with a fake smile. Then she wanders away.
I grab my helmet for my Harley bike from the table I left it on. Then I head out to my bike. I place my helmet on my head. I hop on my bike. Start it up.
Then I am off. I was independent. And I would not change for anyone. I had to deal with so much to get where I was now. To have the freedom I always had been craving. No one was going to take that from me. Freedom was worth more than all the riches in the world.
