Chapter 15 THERE WERE NO LIGHTS on in the house when Rex rode up, so Mrs. Gibson and Neumann were most likely asleep. The backyard light was on as he walked his bike down the narrow sidewalk between the houses to the back door. He tugged the doorknob, then pulled out his keys, tucked in a pocket in his messenger bag, and unlocked the door. He rolled his bike in the back hall, dark except for one light bulb hanging from the ceiling. Rex pulled the string, and the light flicked on. The string had broken more times than Rex could remember. It was a twenty-five-watt bulb and did not light up the hall let alone the stairs.
