Chapter 1
~Kareen~ I had just woken up when I heard my father talking to the Lycan King. As usual, they were discussing a business agreement. My father was the respectable Alpha of our wolf pack in the countryside. While King Ramous was the famous Lycan leader in the City of North Carolina, I am the only daughter of my parents, and currently 23 years old. I'm Kareen, by the way. I had just finished college and taken a business course, yet I didn't work for another company. My father begged me to help him with his newly built community of wolves, survivors of the terrible calamity that killed almost half of our clan. I was afraid of losing my father's trust, so I didn't leave him, despite his strict rules in our clan. I love him so much. He cared for me when my mother died because of the killer storm. Our small pack had vanished. And I am also thankful that the Lycan King helped us to recover. "I think your favor was too much, King Ramous," Rodan, Kareen's father, said to the King. They were in the lobby of our average pack house. I'm hiding at the backdoor to hear their conversation secretly. The King laughed with irony. “This is not a favor, Rodan. It's part of our agreement." "But my daughter was innocent. She's not aware of the Lycan's rules." "That's not a problem. You're a good leader, and I knew that a good leader was also a good father. You appropriately raised your pups and were responsible, so your daughter was well-disciplined, too." I heaved a deep sigh as I realized that the king wanted me to be included in the agreement. It's surprising, though. I clenched my fist to control my emotions. Having a connection with the King was everyone's dream. And I am also aware that the King has never been married. He had an only son from a human he abducted to be his babymaker. The Lycans were hybrid wolves created by humans. They blended species to create a new wolf form, yet the experiment went wrong. Humans failed to control the quick spread of Lycans, which became the apocalypse. The incident happened twelve years ago, and it remains in history. "I need to ask my daughter first. She has the right to choose her fate," said Rodan. I took a deep breath. My father has always been witty when it comes to deciding. "Okay. I didn't ask my son about this agreement, but I am sure he didn't care. And I hope he will change his unpleasant behavior after meeting your daughter," the King said. My father nodded, smiling like a silly wolf. He knows how independent I am, naughty, yet also a fighter. Of course, my father won't let me deal with the agreement without his consent. I hadn't yet met the king's son nor seen his face, but I had heard some facts about him. He also went to college and mainly entertained humans, acting like humans. And the fact I hated the most about him was his being arrogant and ruthless, and he abused his previous mates, who ended up killing themselves. "Are you sure about that, Kareen?" my dad asked shockingly. We're having dinner together on the lanai. "Yes," I indeed replied. "But you don't know how cruel the king's son was." "I know, father. I studied many things, even those famous creatures' nature." I grinned. "But why do you need to pretend to be a slave of his? That's risky, my dear." I could see how worried my father was, but I just made up my mind. I wanted to pretend to be enslaved to meet the king's son before our official mating ceremony. I know I could defend myself if he were going to harm me. I made this idea for awareness and to learn more about my mate. "I want to challenge the king's son, to convince myself that I am going to marry him," I said. I sipped my red juice. "But your plan was dangerous, Kareen." Father was uneasy and couldn't stare at me calmly. "Hm, if you trust me, believe what I can do. Promise, no one can hurt me inside the King's pack," I confidently stated. My father sighed heavily, shaking his head. "Alright, your choice. But one more thing, Kareen." He pointed his index finger at me. "Don't ever disobey any single rule of the King's pack. You know how cruel he was. And I don't want to disappoint him. He hasn't seen your face yet, nor your name. If you are going to pretend to be enslaved, be careful that he won't figure it out. Once your mission succeeds, let me explain it to the King." I felt panic but didn't have a reason to quit. It's my choice, and I have to stand by my decision. It's also my way of helping my father earn those high-profile creatures' respect and sympathy. "Leave it to me, father. I can handle it," I said with complete confidence. "Great. I count you in." The dinner was the last and my previous conversation with my father before I left. The other day, I went to the city on my mission. I have already sent my application to the King's pack for the enslaved people they need. I don't have to hide, aside from the fact that I was the daughter of Alpha Rodan of Greenland Pack. I was excited when my application was accepted and invited for the final selection. It was my first time entering the King's pack's massive facility, also known as the Lycans' Palace. I was terrified as I approached the expansive lobby, where the Lycan's guard guided us. The place was beautiful, luxurious, and modern. It's far from the usual palace. And the ambiance was beyond my expectations because it's nature-friendly. There are vines attached to the rock walls and fine grass that is soft to the touch. I could smell the forest's fresh air, cold and clean. I am not alone in being who was invited for slave selection. There are humans among us, and we are all women. I was qualified because I also knew how to cook food for Lycans. They were also eating cooked food aside from the usual raw meats, the same as my clan. It's not necessary to wear a formal dress, but I prefer to wear a fluffy black dress, showing my shoulders and legs to ensure that the king's son would not stop staring at me. I'm still determining what girls he wants, but my beauty was passable to any guy. I assumed that. My shoulder-length black and wavy hair match my simple yet elegant attire. I'm not fond of formal dress because I grew up in the countryside forest. Wearing a dress was disturbing to my hunting hobbit. "Form your line, ladies!" the fat and tall woman yelled at us. I stood at the end line of seven applicants. I'm the tallest, five feet and eight inches. The fat lady wearing a black and white dress code gave each of us a superior gaze. And he stopped before me, staring at me from head to foot. "Are you sure you want to be a slave?" she asked me with a hint of sarcasm. I wanted to laugh, but I chose to act emotionless. "Yes, ma'am," I said sternly. The lady ran her gaze through my body as if measuring if I could do the enslaved person's task. "Good. I think the Alpha would notice you," she said, smirking. I swallowed hard. I wasn't informed that the King's son was already an Alpha. I thought he was the acting prince preparing to replace his father's throne. It's ridiculous to face the enemy without enough armor. When the fat lady left behind, the tall and masculine guy arrived and prepared us for the official selection. They need three ladies to be assigned to the Alpha's facilities. And one would be the Alpha's slave who would do the task he gave. It's exciting despite the tremendous ordinance of the pack. The bearded guy chose the three ladies. I was surprised! I thought the Alpha would choose them, too. Or I was wrong, and this guy was the Alpha, my mate. No! Although he was handsome, I could not sense the presence of a prince in him. He was just ordinary! I was about to be disappointed, but a baritone voice echoed in my ear. The bearded guy left with three chosen ladies. I was rejected, and the other three more. I gaze at the spiral ladder where the tall, stunning guy is stepping down. He's wearing a black suit, clean-cut hair, neat with aftershave, and a handsome face undeniably! He heaved a sigh as he approached the floor and scanned the area behind us. The way he stares, it feels like he has a magnet that everyone will tempt to set eyes on him. I wasn't expecting to see the familiar guy in the palace. I am trying to remember where I saw him first, but I'm sure it's not the first time I have met him. "Hello, ladies!" he greeted. He moves toward us. He started staring at the lady in the front line. We beings have different beauties, yet the taste of the Alpha can judge who would pass his standard. I inhaled heavily as the guy stepped toward me and faced me. I darted my gaze directly into his green eyes to give him respect. He has a perfectly shaped pointed nose and thin rosy heart-shaped lips. His face was enough to claim his title as an Alpha Lycan and soon-to-be King. "Do you belong with these girls?" he asked, giggling. "Yes," I responded. The guy tilted his head and laughed caustically. "Wow! Seriously?" "Yes, sir," I proclaimed. "Well, I don't have reasons to choose then. I want you," said the guy. I gulped in excitement. Of course, the Alpha has to choose me! I smiled and bowed my head. "Thank you, sir," I said. As I raised my head, I froze when the Alpha held my chin and pushed my head up enough to catch his eyes. I didn't move and waited for his action. He inhaled. "Hm, you're a wolf, aren't you?" he murmured. "You're right," I said huskily. "It would be interesting. Welcome to my house!" He released my chin and moved backward. He's grinning. "I'm Rage, by the way. And your name?" "Kareen," I replied. "Kareen, such a rare name. Anyway, prepare for your tasks. See you tomorrow," he said and left. I took a deep breath. It should be my first challenging life ever! Hello, mate!
