Chapter 11

Mila paused in front of the big door. She took a deep breath and raised her hand and knocked on the hard and cold wood. She heard his voice coming out from the other side of the door giving her permission to come in. That is what she did. When she opened the door, the strong scent of the whiskey hit her hard and her gaze immediately fell on the tall figure in the corner of the room. He was standing there and, since it was pretty dark in that corner, she couldn't see the expression on his face when he turned around and looked at her while holding a glass in his hand. She stopped and placed her shaky hand on her stomach, trying to calm herself a bit. "I can come later, if you are busy now." She knew that was stupid to say, but she was always quick on her tongue and those few seconds of silence appeared like eternity to her. And, when he took a few steps closer to her, close enough to see his face now, she swallowed the dumpling and squeezed the hand on her stomach. His gaze fell on her stomach and he smiled lazily, moving his eyes back to hers. "What made you think I was busy?" As if he didn't expect her to answer or didn't care about her answer, he turned around and went to his desk. He leaned on it and crossed his legs and looked at her as if he was studying her. "Maria told me that she needed help with the house, so we decided to hire someone, but I never had a chance to actually talk to you. Mila felt extremely lost, not uncomfortable, but lost. Hoping that he was going to tell her soon why he had called her here, she told him she had some more work to do. "I am sure that can wait some time longer. Besides, I am your boss." She nodded because she had nothing else to say about that. "Take a seat." He pointed to the small sofa across his desk, walking towards the armchair that was placed behind his desk. At least he was a gentleman, Mila noticed when he waited for her to take a seat on the sofa. When she finally took a seat, she raised her head and looked at him. Even though she was feeling nervous, she managed to calm herself and look cool. She waited for him to speak and he did so. "I like to know who is working for me, especially who is living in my house." He was silent for a few seconds, keeping his gaze locked with hers. "Maria gave me your CV and I have read it, but I want to hear a bit more from you." Mila's heart started beating faster. What if he starts to ask about her family? What is she going to say? The truth. But it hurts to speak about that. She took a deep breath and looked at him. "What would you like to know?" He looked at her thoughtfully, leaning back in his armchair. "Well, there are many things I would like to know, but let's start from the beginning." She nodded, still feeling terrified by what he could ask her, but she loved it here and she didn't want to get back to America. "Sure." He kept looking at her. "What made you come all the way from America to Italy?" Mila knew the answer to that question, but she decided to miss out on one part of it. "I always loved Italy and when I decided to move to a different place I knew I wanted to come here." She really meant what she just said but she noticed that he was a bit suspicious about her answer and he didn't even try to hide that. "What about your family?" Right after he asked her, someone knocked on the door. He seemed pissed when he gave permission to come in and Mila felt relief when she saw it was Maria who was coming in. "I am sorry if I am interrupting you but Luca, Costas are here." Maria said, looking directly at Luca and she seemed as if she wasn't really thrilled with the visitors and when Mila looked at Luca he seemed like that as well. He stood up and when Mila stood up as well, he looked at her. "Stay here with Maria, she is going to take you to your room later." She instantly felt like something was wrong about the visitors, but she nodded, but before she took a seat, someone opened the office door. Mila felt Maria's grip on her arm when a tall handsome man walked into the office and smiled devilishly, landing his gaze on her. "Luca, I knew you had a good reason to stay this long at home." The man was speaking to Luca but he kept staring at Mila. She found it strange and she felt uncomfortable under his gaze, but when Luca looked at Maria and spoke in Italian, Mila felt like something was wrong. After that, he walked to the other man and walked together with him from the office. When the door closed Maria looked at her with panic in her eyes. "Come on, you will be staying with me in my room for a few hours." Mila was so stunned by everything that had happened in the past ten minutes so she just nodded and followed Maria to her room unaware of her destiny and what was coming to her.
