An Agreement

My phone had been ringing nonstop. After I left the barbecue, I ran straight home. Sighing, I looked at the phone and seen it was Rain. I felt terrible I had been ignoring her, but I just couldn’t think straight. I answered her. “I’m sorry, Rain; I just need to be alone,” It was the truth,  I just felt drained and confused. I had seen Sean’s eyes, and they were all black. At first, I thought maybe his pupils had enlarged, but I saw that was not the case when I looked closer. They were black and filled with rage.  My eyes had always changed colors a bit. But dad always said it was because they were hazel. I used to get freaked out when people would one day say they loved my green eyes, then another day someone would tell me they were brown. Most commented on the flecks of yellow in them, but Dad said it really depended on lighting and what I was wearing since technically, my eyes were a mix of different colors. Sean’s eyes, though, were an emerald green usually. “Laney, did you hear what I said?” Rain said, bringing me out of my thought. “Sorry, Rain, I was just thinking,” I answered her back “Well, you better think fast because, as I said, they are all on their way there.” Rain said. What did she just say? Who was on their way? “Who did you say is coming, Rain?” I asked nervously. “Your parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice, Sean and Josh left here a few minutes ago. They are coming to talk to you. Listen, Laney, just hear them out. Can you try to do that?” she asked. “I got to go. I will call you back later,” I said to Rain and hung up the phone. I climbed in my bed, deciding to feign sleep. The door downstairs opened as voices immediately filled the living room. I closed my eyes and hoped they would believe I was asleep. My door opened, and the smell of my mother’s perfume filled my nose. I held still, being sure not to move. Did I snore when I slept? I don’t know. “Laney McLaughlin, I know you are awake,” My mother scolded as she approached my bed. I just kept laying there. I’m sure she did it just to trick me. “Laney, I cannot control two angry Alphas, and one soon to be Alpha get up now!” My mother exclaimed. I jumped up, “what do you mean, Alpha’s mother?” She got my attention with that word. “Shh, calm down. If you come downstairs, we will explain it all,” My mother said as she moved towards the door. “Mom, I can’t. They just fight, and it makes my head hurt. Sean wants to kill Josh, and I don’t know why and...” “Honey, just tell them you will go back upstairs if they fight,” She said, cutting me off.  I rolled my eyes. “Mom, you saw the fight. They wouldn’t listen to Philip or anyone. I doubt they would listen to me, “ “Actually, I think they will now come on down, and let’s just try,” She said as she walked out the door, closing the door behind her. I went to the bathroom and made myself presentable. Grabbing my phone off my bed, I headed downstairs. “Your engagement is off, pup,” Sean spat venomously at Josh. “You don’t get to decide that. I am announcing it tonight.” Josh spat back at him. “Are you trying to defy the order of your superior’s boy?” Sean yelled even louder now at Josh. I was tiring of this. I didn’t even understand why it was anyone’s damn business who I married. “That’s enough! Both of you just sit the f**k down!” I screamed at them. “Watch your language,” My mother said. I looked over at her, but she was smiling.  As I looked around the room, I noticed Josh’s parents and my father looking nervous. My mother was still smiling like the Cheshire cat. Josh and Sean sat down but glared at one another. I took a deep breath. Maybe this was a bad idea. I could feel a warmth spread through me. “I am giving you strength, you’re going to need it,” I heard in my head. “Who are you,” I asked back. “I am your wolf. We have a lot to catch up on, so don’t lose it now,” She said to me. I began laughing hysterically. I must really be going crazy. Call the psych ward now, I thought to myself. “Are you ok?” My dad asked me as he wrapped his hands around me. Sean and Josh both stood by him, but he pushed them back. “You aren’t crazy. They are wolves as well,” I heard again in my head. I looked at my father and whispered, “Are you a wolf?” I expected him to call me crazy and deny it, but he only nodded his head. Maybe I got the wild gene from him. Perhaps he was mad too, I thought. “I think her wolf really is back,” I heard my father say. “Your wolf is back?” Josh asked me, suddenly excited. “Yes, I could see her wolf at the barbecue. This all the more confirms what we already know to be true. Laney is mine,” Sean stated. “You didn’t bring back s**t. We were about to mate, and her wolf must have sensed that,” Josh stated matter-of-factly. Wow, they must have all been crazy. Maybe this was all dream. I pinched myself to see ouch, nope not a dream. Perhaps I just needed to lie down. “Oh no, you don’t. If you go lay down, then Josh may end up dead. Our mate will kill him. Josh is not our mate, but you care for him. So do I in some way. He helped you when I was not there. I know you’re confused, but I gave you the strength to get through this. I left you before, but I won’t leave you again,” That voice said again in my head. I walked towards the living room and sat down. Everyone followed behind. I decided to at least hear what they had to say. Then I would decide who was crazier, them, or me. “So, who wants to start first?” I asked them. My mother sat down next to me then said, “Well, when you were four, there was a... an accident. See, I guess the first thing is we are all werewolves. We have been a part of this pack since Philip’s father was the Alpha,” “What is an Alpha?” I blurted out, feeling bad for interrupting her. She seemed to struggle with her story. “An Alpha is the leader of the pack. Philip here is our Alpha, and Josh is the next Alpha in line,” She said. “What about Sean?” I asked her. “Well, Sean is the head Alpha of our State.” She answered. I think I now understood why Philip is the Mayor of this town. I nodded my head for her to continue. “Well, one day, another pack attacked our pack. They... they...” she stopped and suddenly started crying. Dad pulled her to him and comforted her. It was Philip who continued where she left off. “Your father killed their Alpha. He was always strong, but their beta in a rage took you. That is where you get the scar you most likely still have on your leg. We believe he was trying to... cut your leg off. However, he failed. Sean’s father found you and saved you,” I gasped in disbelief at the horror. I could not believe anyone would be so cruel as to try to cut off my leg. It explained the scar on my left thigh. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and it was comforting. I knew it was Sean because he was no longer seated on the sofa. I wanted to tell him to remove it, but somehow I felt better with it there. “You were so young. Though your wolf was technically always there, you can’t change into one until you are sixteen years old. But your wolf disappeared that day. We tried to mind link you and couldn’t,” my father said. “What do you mean mind link me?” I interrupted my father. “Well, since you are our daughter, we are capable of mind linking you. Once you were older, you would generally take the ceremony and oath to link you and your mind to our whole pack. Through mind link, you can communicate without the use of sound, like through your mind. There are other mind links like those with a mate, but we will get to that later,” My father said. I again nodded for him to continue. “Well, after a few years passed with no signs of your wolf’s return, we kept all this from you. Your mind was already fragile, and without the strength of your wolf, we thought it best you not know they existed until you were older. Then your sixteenth birthday came and went, and your wolf still had not returned. We worried you may never get her back. We researched whatever we could on it, we learned that your wolf could return if you found your mate,” My father stopped there as if waiting for me to ask any questions.  I had so many really, I thought back to all he said, “What is beta?” “A Beta is like the second in command behind the Alpha and Luna. I am beta to our pack,” My father said. “We are a Luna. I will explain to you later why I left,” The voice which I now learned is my wolf said to me. “I am a Luna. What is that?” I asked. “Yes, love you are,” Sean said from behind me. “You are a Luna, but who’s Luna are you is the question. See, both Sean and Josh are claiming to be your mate,” My father stated, somewhat proudly. Being Luna must be a big deal. “I keep hearing the word mate. What does that mean?” I asked. “A mate is your other half like a soul mate. The Moon Goddess Selene herself links you to your soulmate. The human side is drawn to your mate, but your wolf will stake it claims pretty quickly. It is usually our wolf that points that out. There are other ways to know, as well. You will feel tingling like shocks when you touch. The wolf will carry markings to represent your mate as well. Once mated, you can always mind linking with your mate, no matter where you are. Since your wolf was absent so long, Josh’s wolf could not completely verify if you were his mate. I believe his human side is in love with you,” My father said as he looked at Josh. “As is my wolf. My wolf has accepted my love for you and loves you as well,” Josh said to me. “Pup, I don’t care what you and your damn wolf have accepted, Laney is my true mate. Her wolf and mine have already verified that,” Sean said, coming around from behind the couch. “Well, I have done some research,” Josh’s mom said, interrupting the stare-down between the guys. “Go ahead, dear, tell them,” Philip said. “Well, it is possible since his wolf has also accepted her as a mate that Laney could be with him if she chose to. Her wolf’s long absence means that Laney may not feel obliged to listen and mate with Sean. She has not properly bonded with her mate, I assume,” “Are you suggesting my daughter mate with your son, even after he broke the rules? We had decided already that Josh would wait until she was eighteen. We made this decision because we suspected he may not be her true mate. Had he had been, her wolf would have returned to be with her mate,” My father practically yelled at her. “Joe,” Philip said with a warning in his tone, But Sean moved next to my father, making Philip bow his head down. Whatever it was that almost happened didn’t. “You would stand here and think it was ok to let a man kill your next Alpha?” Clara, Josh’s mother, said defiantly. “If I wanted your son dead, he would be dead. He has tried to mate with Laney even after he knew she was mine. Do not sit here and act like he is innocent. Had this had been any other Alpha, he would have been dead already. I can control my wolf, in that matter, mostly. This is why I am the Head Alpha here. You will never try to use Laney as some damn bargaining chip for your son’s life. In fact, you owe to her the fact that he still lives. Your son tried to trick her when she didn’t have all the facts. If you so much as try this s**t one more time, I will not hesitate to...” Sean said to her before I cut him off. “Sean, can I speak to you outside, please?” I had to give it to her the whole time he stood over her yelling, she maintained eye contact, even if she cowered back into Philip’s arms. “Of course, Laney,” Sean said as he stood up and composed himself. He was visibly shaking. We took a short walk. We walked in silence for a moment before I asked, “So what makes you so sure I am your mate?” He stopped walking for a moment, and I turned towards him. “Laney, the moment I met you, I knew you were my mate, even if you didn’t have your wolf. But I felt the sparks, and so did you. You will never feel the pleasure I could give you with anyone else,” With that, he pulled me to him and kissed me. It sent shivers down my spine. His lips were soft, but he kissed me with an urgency and a passion I have never felt before. As he deepened the kiss, I moaned. I had never felt this good. “Laney,” he said as he pulled away, “You are mine, don’t you feel it?” I couldn’t speak; I had to catch my breath. “Laney, I want you to choose me. I don’t want you to come to me because your wolf wants to. I want all of you, heart, body, soul, and wolf. So I propose we get to know each other, and whatever decision you decide in the end, I will accept it,” It surprised me he would agree to that, so I accepted, “I promise you nothing but want to get to know you,” “I want you to know that I could have you either way. You may not be familiar yet with our laws, but you are my mate, not to mention I pull rank around here. Josh would have to let you go, technically he should already be dead,” He said. I gasped. “You can’t kill him,” I said. “I won’t as long as he plays by the rules. The first one is to take off that Damn ring,” I don’t know why, but I laughed. I knew he was not trying to act all high and mighty with what he said.  Honestly, from what I could understand, he was very fair. I allowed him to hold my hand as we walked back. It was comforting. I was not choosing him right now, but I will get to know him. I just hope he really would accept my decision if it was not him.
