Carolina seemed preoccupied lately. I reasoned that she was only studying extra hard. Dean Alcott had remembered that she owed the admissions office her GED result. Smart or not, Caro had to prove herself through a bunch of papers.
As an academic, I knew what it was like to prove myself through acing tests. My mother was not very strict, but I had insisted on distancing myself from my father as much as possible. He never liked school. Sadly, as I walked away from his footsteps, I did not realize that I was walking backward. I stumbled. Hard. I would like to believe that I had gotten up and dusted myself enough to be proud of myself again.
