Chapter one
Aria's POV
“You must be delusional. I only saw you as a sister. Selene is the one I love.” Damon, my boyfriend of three years, said, his voice echoing throughout the dining room, shattering my heart.
I was getting ready for dinner tonight. Damon was finally coming to my house. It's probably to tell my family about us.
My family… They weren't my biggest fan but I believed they loved me.
The housekeeper came to knock on my door. “Everyone is downstairs already, Aria. They're waiting for you.”
I nodded and told her I'd be downstairs in a minute.
As I climbed the stairs down, my heart jumped. I could hear his voice.
Damon.
My boyfriend. He is from Moonsbane pack and he is hoping to be Alpha one day. And we can achieve that with my father's help. We have been together for three years. Even though he hasn't marked me yet, he loved me despite my wolf being suppressed.
He has finally come to meet my family and I couldn't be more excited.
“Aria!” The advisor of the Moonsbane pack and my father called out to me
“It's about time you joined us. Can you not see we have an important guest?” He said to me with an annoyed tone, but I ignored it.
I smiled at Damon as our eyes met but he looked away. Weird, but I didn't dwell on it.
We all took our seats by the table and we were served.
Selene kept throwing glances at Damon and he was doing the same. It made me feel uncomfortable, but I looked away.
Damon was here for me tonight.
Time passed and Damon clicked his glass. Gaining everyone's attention.
It was time. It was finally time.
He cleared his throat and began.
“Alpha Hale, thank you for hosting me tonight. You have a lovely family by the way. But I'm here today for your daughter.”
“Oh, that's lovely.” I heard my mother say.
I couldn't contain my joy. He was really doing it.
Damon smiled and continued.“ I really want to commend you. You have raised a lovely daughter. She is kind, beautiful, gorgeous, she is one in a million and I have the honour to have fallen in love with her.”
I could barely contain my smile. I was trying really hard to control myself.
Damon then brought out a box and my heart beat skyrocketed. He is going to propose? Now? Wow!
I let out a harsh breath. Damon glanced at me but continued. “So, I want to ask this woman to be my wife. And hopefully my Luna someday.”
“Selene, would you do the honor?”
“Ye— wait Selene?” I said harshly but no one seemed to hear me.
I could see Selene, squealing and stretching out her fingers but none of the words registered. It felt like I was underwater but I eventually found my voice.
“Damon, what's going on?” Everyone paused and glanced at my direction.
“I…I don't understand. You aren't here for me? I'm your girlfriend. Is this some sort of prank?”
“What are you going on about?” my father interrupted.
I didn't say anything immediately. I just looked at Damon with questioning eyes. Selene clung to him while glaring at me.
“What happened?” I asked, finding my voice again.
“What are you talking about?” He said.
What happened? He had the audacity to ask me what happened.
“What happened? I don't know, maybe the fact that we have been together for the past three years.” I said my tone tinged with anger.
Damon let out a small laugh, as if I was embarrassing him
“Aria,” he said calmly, way too calmly for my liking. “I don't know what you're talking about or what you think it's going on, but you and I were never together.”
The words felt like a slap and my stomach dropped.
I looked around the room and I could see eyes on me. Even the kitchen staff was looking at me like I was crazy.
I swallowed and continued. “ Damon, stop this. It's not funny.”
He finally let Selene go and walked towards me. His eyes, once warm to me, were now cold.
“Aria, I treated you like a sister. Nothing else.”
My chest tightened and I felt tears starting to gather at the corner of my eyes. “That's…that's a lie. You told me you love me. You promised me th—”
“I was nice to you.” He cut me off. “You must be delusional. I only saw you as a sister. Selene is the one I love.” He yelled, his voice echoing throughout the dining room, shattering my heart.
I snapped back to reality.
“Really? After everything?” I asked, my voice small.
“If you misunderstood our relationship, that's not my fault.” He added.
Selene finally stepped forward and gave me a pitying look. “You should stop this, Aria. You are humiliating yourself.”
My legs felt weak. I glanced at my father and he gave me that irritated look. I decided to plead my case to him. “ Father, he is lying. We have —”
“Mind your tone.” He shunned me with a steel sharp voice. “Damon is our honoured guest and he will be treated as such. Stop disgracing yourself.”
Three years. Three years of my life. Just like that. Gone down the drain. I looked at Damon again but he was looking everywhere but me.
I let out a harsh laugh. I suddenly felt like a joke. He never even claimed me or marked me. He never wanted to sleep with me no matter how many times I initiated it.
I finally understood. I am Aria not Selene. Nothing good ever comes to me. I could feel my wolf stirring but as usual, nothing.
“Fine.” I croaked out. “It's totally fine.”
I then left the dining room, grabbed my coat with shaky hands, and stormed out of the house.
I finally let the tears fall.
How can he do that to me? I thought he loved me? He said he loved me.
I saw a bar and decided to go in.
The air smelled of stale beer and fried chicken. I took a seat and ordered the strongest alcohol.
Fuck everyone.
