Prologue
" Uncle? Where are we going?" I asked as my Uncle Rhamon carried me through a dark long stairwell. My name is Aurelia Rose, I was around five when my uncle awoke me in the middle of the night and told me it was dangerous. It was dangerous and I had to hide to protect myself. When I asked for how long, he did not respond. I had only known Uncle Rhamon for about a week after my parents died. They were attacked. I knew because I had seen it but everyone just said it was an accident. Rhamon looked down at me, smiling softly, "Somewhere safe. How about you go back to sleep? You must be tired dear." After he said that, he pulled up the hood I was wearing and continued walking. I couldn't see very well with the hood on but I couldn't move my hands to remove it. It was a little chilly wherever we were, but I was only wearing a pair of pajama shorts, a shirt, a hood, and.... no socks. Rhamon walked up to a person mumbling something to him that I couldn't hear and then I heard a loud sound. I jumped a little but didn't try to look because I felt like I should be sleeping and didn't want to get in trouble. Whenever my mom was still alive she would always scold me whenever I didn't go to bed when she told me to. Speaking of my mom... I missed her. She was so beautiful with bright blue eyes and the same hair as me. She had waist-length platinum blonde hair that faded into a soft red at the tips. I was told, since I have the same kind of hair, that I was special, but I just thought it meant I was pretty like her. Rhamon's hold of me tightened a tiny bit when he felt me jolt, "It's okay Aurelia. It is just a door. I know you're awake." He said plainly, causing me to look up at him. He had short brown hair with brown eyes that were scrunched just slightly. He walked into a white room with a hospital-looking bed and other medical stuff. " Why are we here?" I asked, looking at him and then the bed when he placed me on it. "They have to... give you a little poke to make sure you're healthy." Rhamon said before a doctor came in. He turned and whispered something to the doctor. "But I thought we were going to hide? I thought I was already healthy..?" I said, confused. If we were in danger, why were we wasting time doing something like that? Something felt wrong, but Uncle Rhamon wouldn't put me in any danger. Rhamon sighed, "Don't be difficult Aurelia. You wont remember anything after this anyway...." He paused for a second before continuing, "We have to make sure you don't remember so that we can make sure you aren't.. In danger in the future Aurelia." All that did was confuse me more, that wouldn't make sure I was healthy. Why couldn't I have memories? "But I wan't to be able to remember.." After I said that, the doctor walked up to me beginning to wrap a cloth around my arm, tightening it slightly before flicking my arm. "Uncle I don't want it!" I yelled trying to get the doctor to stop. They both ignored me and the doctor pulled out a syringe, putting it into my arm. I watched with fear as the liquid was pushed out of the syringe and into my body. It was expected of a child to be afraid of needles, but this fear felt deeper. After a few seconds, my vision started to blur and I felt myself starting to sway. What was happening to me? What did they do? "I'm scared." I whispered before falling backwards onto the mattress. 2 YEARS LATER... I skipped down the steps and ran towards the door when I heard it open. "Uncle Rhamon!" I yelled happily and hugged him tightly. I only got to see him every once in a while since he was always busy. I always asked him what he was busy with but the only answer I ever got was that it was stuff that wasn't important to children. "Happy seventh birthday Aurelia." Rhamon said with a smile and handed me a doll. Last year he got me a doll as well. They were the only toys I had besides the ones I made myself with random things in the house. The house was big and I often shared it with myself unless Uncle Rhamon came. I was always given food by a maid. She never talked to me. In fact, she usually would ignore me. Uncle Rhamon would give me anything I needed to learn so that I wouldn't fall behind with my education. He wanted me to be very smart. It was often boring, so I hadn't much to do besides play and study. But I could only play so much with the little toys I had without it getting boring, so it was nice to have a new doll. "Thank you Uncle" I responded while taking the doll and setting it aside. "Will you be eating lunch with me today? I made cookies." Even though I was given food multiple times a day, cooking was one of the very few things I could do here. So I did it to occupy time. My uncle shook his head with a sigh, "Unfortunately there is a lot of work to be done, my dear. I have to go but I wanted to make sure I wished you well on your day." I sighed before nodding, "I understand Uncle is very busy... Maybe you can eat with me soon?" I asked with hope and he smiled back. "I would love to Aurelia. I will try to make some time for you within the week." He said before turning away to leave. When he did that, I turned around. That was what was expected of me. It was against the rules to look out the door... 6 YEARS LATER... I yawned softly, opening my eyes and stretching. Today I was thirteen. Two years ago, Uncle stopped giving me dolls and began to ask what I wanted for my birthday as he noticed I stopped playing with them as much. Last year I received paint and canvas. This year I told him I'd have a book. Sure, there were books in the house, however they mainly consisted of cook books, arts and crafts, etc. There weren't actual stories. I stood up and walked into the bathroom, brushing my hair and teeth. I got dressed in a pretty flowy dress I had made myself for today before spraying a small bit of rose spray on myself. Uncle Rhamon liked to give me flowers, mainly roses, which I learned how to care for. I then learned how to make things with the flowers when they reach an end to their lives. Finally, I tied my hair up with a bow and admired my hair for a second. It had grown to be to my mid-back. It was blonde with the beautiful reddish pink color at the end, just like my mom's hair. I walked out of the bathroom before walking down the stairs. I looked at the door before frowning. Uncle Rhoman was usually always here on my birthday. Continuing to walk down the stairs, I stumbled to the stand by the door which had a brand new bouquet of roses and a note that said: "My dear Aurelia, Unfortunately I could not make it today as I am very busy. However, I hope you'll take these as an apology. Your gift will be delivered with your dinner. Do not forget to study for the day as I will be testing you at the end of the week. - My Apologies, Rhamon" My eyes started to tear up as I put down the card, picking up the roses and putting them in a vase I had painted earlier in the week. I muffled a sob as I sat down on the couch. Am I not important enough for him to visit me anymore...? It's been two months already... As I continued to think, tears began to spill, beginning to soak my dress. I sat there for a little while before getting up and whipping my face, clearing it of any dried tears. "I'll just make myself a cake, that will make me feel better." Hours later, my food was delivered along with a book. I squealed slightly before running over to take both. The food was spaghetti but more importantly, the book was beautiful. It had silver curled trim along the sides. I looked at the front and saw the title, 'The little creature'. There was a silhouette of some creature. "That must be what it is about." I smiled, holding the book close to me. I may have been upset earlier, but I felt better knowing he remembered what I wanted.
