Chapter 34

Adaline's POV

After a rough night of sleep and an emotional morning at Sebs' parents' house while picking up a box of items they had put aside for me, we were on our way to the Lotus pack. James was going through the box in the back seat with Beck. "What's this thing momma?" He was holding up a little plastic medal on a red and white string. I started to laugh "I forgot about that!" He handed it to me "this was our prize. We were at a work event for your dad and there were these silly games to play to win gift cards. Your dad roped me into the three-legged race. Which mind you, he's almost a full foot taller than me, so it was not very easy. He basically cheated at the end to win by lifting me up slightly so that it was just him running and I was just hanging on laughing wildly." It was like I was watching a movie as that memory flashed in my mind. "We won and they handed us this and the gift card. Your dad hung it in his truck for a while but then I guess he placed it in his room."

I handed it back to James, "we can hang it up somewhere in your room if you would like?" He nodded, squealed and continued to look through the box. I leaned my head on Barrett for a bit of comfort as I remembered that cookout event he had. Sebastian was so proud to have won that little plastic medal. Luckily, the drive wasn't too long as the pack was actually only about an hour and half from my papas house. He was also tagging along and riding with Oliver, Emily, David and the girls. We were really far in the woods, though it seemed as we were on the longest dirt road. We came up on a large gold gate and the guard bowed to Oliver's car and waved us all through. It was a cute little community, small cottages lined the roads. It was like a small town. Further down there were shops and in the center of the whole area was the largest house. We parked and all piled out of the car, "As you can all see, we have a little city in here with shopping for all your needs. We rarely leave to keep the thought that we have gone extinct." Oliver was explaining, "it will be completely safe to transform here, no one knows we are here and that is the way we like it. Let me show you all to your rooms and then we can get a meeting going before dinner to discuss the logistics of it all and I will invite the pack's head doctor along as well."

He had us all placed on the third floor, which Chloe explained would be her floor when she finds her mate. Our room was like a large apartment. We walked into a small kitchen and the living area. The three doors separated two bedrooms and a bathroom. We got all our things unpacked and Heather came by to drop off Sawyer and Lilly and was accompanied by two older ladies. "Luna, Alpha" they bowed. "We will be watching the little ones while you eat and have a meeting. I am Sophia and this is Lydia." They smiled "thank you very much. I really appreciate it." I shook their hands and kissed James on the head. "You behave, James, you and Lilly help out Sophia and Lydia with Sawyer okay?" He smiled "yes momma". We headed out. Rachel met us on the stairs. "We will be eating in a separate dining room. That way, it is just us and you don't have to worry about meeting the others just yet." The dining room was like a mini ball room, this place is super fancy. We ate and had good conversations. It felt normal for the first time in several days.

After dinner, we headed to Rachel's office. That office was exactly what I would have thought. Elegant and screamed girl boss, light pinks, blues and greens. There were two large blue velvet couches that sat on either side of the door and three light pink velvet chairs in front of her large white desk. We all sat down. "I know this is very short notice. We think you should mark Adaline tonight. We are prepared at the hospital in case of any small or large side effects. We don't know exactly what will happen when your marked or how long it will take to take effect." David was saying as lightly as he could make it sound. "This is Dr. Sandra, she is the best of the best and will be taking care of you." He pointed to an older, maybe 70 or so woman. She was very put together though and seemed to be very kept in her appearance. Her hair was a chocolaty brown and was very lean. She smiled softly at me "it is so good to have you here and I do have some theories as to what will happen. I don't want to scare you, but from my research, since you have not had your wolf for 8 years now, this shift will be extremely painful. Your wolf has been dormit and I believe it will take a lot out of her and you may be out for a few days." Well, that didn't make me feel any better. "Also, I know this is a more intimate thing, but since she cant mark you back until her wolf is here, we think it best you mark her here, now." She was looking at us apologetically. "Wait here, with all of you and right now? I don't think that is a good idea. I don't think she is ready." Barrett was a rambling mess for once it wasn't me.

"Barrett, listen, it's okay. I appreciate the concern, but if the doctor thinks this is what is best, then I think we should do as she says." He was looking at me like I had grown two heads, "I just need to have everyone and I mean EVERYONE, promise me nothing happens to James when I am out. Not one hair would be moved from his head. Not a single scratch or mark." They all smiled and nodded. "We promise Adaline, plus you know, I will destroy anyone who hurts me boy." Beck was staring daggers at everyone, that's my girl. "Okay, so how does this happen?" I was looking at the doctor, "Barrett will mark you and we will make our way out to the field because your wolf will want to shift, then we essentailly go from there." Barrett was standing in front of me "are you sure Adaline are you absolulty sure, this will be painful and what if it doesnt work what if." He trailed off looking sad, "listen this is what I was born to do apparently and I know you wont let anything bad happen. I trust you all and, honestly, the faster I get this over with, the better I will feel."

"Could everyone at least turn around. I would prefer some privacy at least." Barrett was struggling with Shaw as I saw his eyes changing between his bright blue eyes and the deep blue of Shaws. I heard a lot of shuffling behind me, assuming it was everyone giving us privacy. "This is going to hurt a but Adaline, but it will be over quickly." I nodded, Barrett kissed me softly and then lightly kissed my neck, which made me tilt my head to give him more access, then I felt a peircing burning pain in my neck. I let out a scream that I tried to keep in but failed. Then it was gone. I was surrounded by everyone. It was hard to hear, though the doctors screamed "get her outside now", but it was faint. "Hello Adaline" I looked around. What, what was that? "I heard a chuckle in my head, I am so glad to finally get to talk to you like I was always meant to." Selena I thought "Yes, it is me and yes, before you ask, I do know what you are thinking as we share a mind and body." That is going to need some getting used to. Barrett set me down "It is working. Her eyes are bright purple." I smiled at him "Adaline, do you hear Selena?" I nodded, "let her take over. The faster you let her shift, the faster you can stop the pain." Everyone was around me. "How do I let her do that though?"

"Adaline think of me, think of shifting into a wolf, try to let me take control." Yeah easy peasy Selena, I thought she giggled "I know it sounds tough but you can do it, and dont stop and try to take control back. It will only make it hurt worse." Sure visualize that sounds great. "Adaline, I am going to shift as you do so Shaw and Selena can meet, but I am right here the whole time." Okay Selena let's do this, "Yes girl, we got this!" Then I felt my whole body on fire the pain was unimaginable. I realized that what I thought was others screaming was in fact me. I felt my bones break and heard awful cracks. "Keep focusing, Adaline we are almost done. You are doing great. It was easy for her to say she wasn't basically on fire. Then it was done. "Look through my eyes Adaline you did it." I heard gasps all around me, "am I a wolf?" I tried saying but couldnt hear my voice say it. What the heck. Then I heard Shaw's growly voice in my head. "Mate, you are so beautiful". I was looking at Shaw eye to eye, then I looked down I saw pure white paws. Shaw let out a loud howl and then I heard another and noticed it was Selena. "Okay Adaline, it's time to shift back. We need the strength so I need you to picture yourself, you hair, your face, your body. That is how you shift back." I did as she said and much quicker this time I was standing on two feet again I smiled at Barrett as he pulled on shorts then I saw his shocked face before her screamed "Adaline" and everything went black.
