Chapter 1: The Chase
The forest was alive with danger.
Lena’s heart pounded in her chest like a drum. Branches scraped her arms and legs, thorns tearing through her thin jacket, but she didn’t stop. Not for a second.
Behind her, the low growl of wolves echoed through the darkness, sharp and threatening. Their eyes glowed like burning coals. Lena stumbled, nearly falling, and one of the wolves yipped in satisfaction.
“Run! Just… keep… running!” she gasped, gasping for air as her lungs burned.
She had no idea why they were after her. She had never harmed a wolf in her life. Yet somehow, she had crossed their territory, and now she was the prey.
The forest seemed endless. Every step she took felt heavier than the last, her boots slipping on damp leaves. She heard the wolves closing in, the snap of twigs and low growls like a drumbeat of fear.
Then, just as despair threatened to crush her, a voice boomed through the night.
“STOP!”
It wasn’t a human voice. It wasn’t harsh. It was deep, commanding, and impossibly strong.
The wolves froze mid-step, ears flattening, growls dying on their throats. Lena froze too, unsure if she should be more terrified or relieved.
A figure stepped out from between the trees. Tall. Broad-shouldered. With eyes that seemed to glow even in the moonlight, he exuded power so absolute that Lena felt like her heart had skipped several beats.
“You… you’re human,” she whispered, staring at him. Her voice shook, not with fear—but with awe.
He didn’t answer. Instead, his gaze locked onto her, and something inside her chest stirred, a strange warmth that made her knees wobble.
The wolves started to back away, their growls low, almost reverent. “What are you?” Lena asked in a trembling voice.
“I am the Alpha King,” he said simply, his voice smooth and cold. Then, his eyes narrowed, and his gaze softened just slightly as he added, “And you… are mine.”
Lena froze. Her mind struggled to process the words. The Alpha King—this terrifying, powerful figure—was claiming her as his mate? It sounded like a fairy tale. A nightmare. She swallowed hard.
“M-Mine?” she stammered. “I… I’m not—”
“You are,” he interrupted, his voice like steel wrapped in velvet. “Your wolf has been calling to me long before I even knew you existed.”
Her pulse jumped. Wolf? Calling? She had no idea what he meant. She had never heard of a wolf inside herself. She had never even known she wasn’t entirely ordinary.
The Alpha King took a step toward her, and Lena instinctively took a step back, her back pressing against a tree trunk. The forest seemed smaller now, the trees closing in, and yet, she felt something magnetic pulling her toward him.
“You don’t understand,” she whispered, shaking her head. “I’m… I’m just a girl. I’ve never—never been anything special.”
He tilted his head, a slow, dangerous motion. “You are more than you think.”
Lena’s stomach turned. There was something in his gaze, something raw and intense, that made her feel both terrified and alive. She wanted to run, and yet she couldn’t.
“Why… why are the wolves chasing me?” she asked. Her voice was small, almost fragile.
“They sense you,” he said simply. “They sense the bond between us. They will protect you—or they will attack. But I am here now. No harm will come to you while I am near.”
“I don’t… I don’t understand any of this,” she whispered. Her voice broke. “I just… I just want to go home.”
“You have no home yet,” he said, his voice softening just slightly. “Not until you accept what you are—and what you are meant to be.”
Lena swallowed hard. Every instinct in her screamed that she was in over her head. But even as fear gripped her, a strange feeling of belonging stirred in her chest. She didn’t understand why, but being near him felt… right. Terrifyingly right.
The Alpha King moved closer, and the forest seemed to hold its breath. “Come with me,” he said. “I will keep you safe. No one will harm you.”
“I… I can’t,” Lena said, her voice shaking. “I don’t belong in your world.”
“You already do,” he replied simply. “Whether you believe it or not.”
For a moment, silence fell. Only the soft rustling of the forest filled the air. The wolves remained at a respectful distance, their eyes fixed on her. Lena’s mind raced. She didn’t know this man. She didn’t even know what a wolf was in her body—or if she even had one.
And yet… something deep inside whispered that he was telling the truth. That she was not ordinary. That her life had been leading to this moment.
“Please…” she whispered, voice trembling. “I don’t know if I can do this.”
He tilted his head again, studying her, and for a brief moment, he smiled—a small, rare smile that made her stomach twist with confusion.
“You don’t have to understand now,” he said. “You only have to trust me. I will not let you fall.”
Lena’s legs shook. She had spent years surviving alone, hiding from everything, believing she had no power. And yet now, standing before the most powerful creature she had ever seen, she felt something shift inside her—a spark, a flicker of courage.
“I… I’ll try,” she said finally.
He nodded once. “Good. Then let us leave this place before anyone decides to challenge our bond.”
As he turned, Lena followed, her steps hesitant but determined. Every muscle in her body ached, every fear screamed at her to run away—but something in his presence anchored her.
The forest seemed to grow darker as they moved, shadows stretching like hands reaching for them. But for the first time in her life, Lena did not feel entirely alone. She felt… chosen.
“You will need to eat,” he said suddenly, his voice cutting through her thoughts. “And sleep. You have been running for hours. Tomorrow, I will explain everything.”
“I don’t even know what to eat,” she whispered, trying to hide the tremor in her voice.
“You will learn,” he replied, eyes glinting in the moonlight. “Everything you need to know… will come in time.”
The tension in the forest seemed to thrum with unspoken danger. Lena couldn’t help but glance over her shoulder. The wolves watched them, alert, but no longer threatening. It was as if they too had acknowledged her place beside him.
“What if the others don’t accept me?” she asked suddenly, voice small. “The other wolves… the leaders… the council?”
“They will try to stop us,” he admitted, voice low, almost a growl. “Some of them already are plotting. But it does not matter. You are mine. No one can change that.”
Lena’s chest tightened. She had never imagined a life where someone would claim her like that, not in a possessive way, but in a protective, binding way that made her feel… safe. And yet, the weight of responsibility crushed her. She was just a girl. How could she possibly belong in this dangerous world?
“You’re… you’re so strong,” she whispered, not meaning to, but the words slipped out.
“And you,” he said, his gaze softening in a way that made her cheeks flush, “are stronger than you know. You will survive this. You must. And one day… you will stand beside me, not behind me.”
Lena’s stomach twisted, both fear and hope clashing inside her. She wanted to believe him, to trust him, but the thought of all the danger awaiting her made her heart pound even faster.
They reached the edge of a clearing, where the faint outline of a large fortress appeared through the trees—Moonfang Palace. Towering walls, sharp spires, and an aura of absolute authority. Lena stared at it, feeling both awe and terror.
“This… this is where I belong?” she asked, voice trembling.
“Yes,” Kael said simply. “And whether you know it or not… it is where you have always been meant to be.”
Lena took a shaky breath and stepped forward. The wolves followed at a respectful distance. Kael’s presence was steady beside her, a constant she had never known. And as she crossed the threshold of the palace grounds, a strange certainty filled her heart.
No matter what challenges awaited her, no matter what enemies plotted against them… she was no longer alone.
And the Alpha King had claimed her as his mate.
The forest behind them was dark, but the future ahead burned with unknown, dangerous possibilities.
