Lena barely had time to catch her breath before Kael led her inside Moonfang Palace. The halls were vast, lit by torches that cast long shadows across polished stone floors. The walls seemed to hum with power, as if the palace itself were alive.
“Stay close to me,” Kael ordered, his voice low but firm. “There are eyes everywhere. Some will welcome you, others… will try to destroy you.”
Lena nodded, her stomach twisting. She had no idea what she had stepped into. Wolves, politics, a King… a mate bond she barely understood. And yet, something deep inside her whispered that this was her fate.
They entered a large hall. At the far end, a group of wolves waited. Tall, imposing, their eyes sharp, filled with suspicion. The council. The pack leaders.
One of them stepped forward, a gray-furred wolf with a scar running across his cheek. “Alpha Kael,” he said formally. “I have heard… rumors. That you have brought a human into the palace. That you intend to make her… your Luna?”
Kael’s eyes narrowed, cold as steel. “She is my mate,” he said simply. “And no one here has the right to question my decision.”
A murmur ran through the council. Lena shrank back instinctively, feeling the weight of dozens of watchful eyes on her. Her hands trembled.
“I… I’m not…” she began, but Kael stepped closer, his presence shielding her.
“You are exactly who you are meant to be,” he interrupted softly, but there was steel under his words. “And anyone who cannot accept that… will answer to me.”
The gray-furred Alpha, clearly unsettled, glanced at the others. “It is not merely acceptance. The rules of our world—of all packs—do not allow a human to claim the position of Luna. If this is true, then you… risk the stability of the kingdom, Kael.”
Lena swallowed hard. Her voice barely came out. “I… I don’t know what to do. I’ve never—”
Kael’s gaze softened, just a fraction. “You do not need to know yet. You only need to survive the night.”
Before the council could respond, a sudden sound echoed through the hall: the clatter of boots on stone. Every wolf stiffened, ears twitching.
From the shadows, a figure stepped forward—a woman cloaked in black, her face partially hidden. Her presence alone seemed to command attention.
“Who is she?” Lena whispered, instinctively grabbing Kael’s sleeve.
Kael’s jaw tightened. “That,” he said slowly, his voice dangerous, “is someone you will not trust at first. But you must listen.”
The woman bowed slightly to Kael, then turned her eyes to Lena. For a heartbeat, Lena thought she saw… recognition.
“You… you know me?” Lena asked, her voice trembling.
The woman’s lips curled into a faint, almost cruel smile. “In time, you will remember,” she said cryptically. “But for now… your life depends on listening to me.”
Kael’s wolf growled low in his throat. “Do not speak unless I permit it,” he warned, but there was something in his eyes—a hint of unease.
The woman bowed again and then moved closer. “Alpha King, the council’s suspicions are growing. They may act tonight. I’ve come to ensure she survives.”
Lena’s head spun. “She… she’s supposed to protect me?”
“Yes,” Kael said, his voice clipped. “But there is more. This woman knows truths about your past… truths even you do not know.”
Lena froze. Her heart thudded painfully. “My… past? I don’t understand…”
“You will,” the woman said. “But first, you must prove that you can survive in a world you do not yet belong to.”
The council members exchanged uneasy glances. Some seemed relieved by the stranger’s presence; others stiffened, suspicion burning in their eyes.
Kael turned to Lena, his hand brushing lightly over hers. “You will stay close to her. Learn what you can. And remember—your life is no longer just yours. You are tied to me, and to the fate of every pack in this kingdom.”
Lena swallowed. “I… I’ll try.”
The woman’s eyes gleamed as she nodded. “Good. Now, it begins.”
No one said another word. The tension in the room was suffocating. Lena felt it pressing down on her chest. Her mind raced: enemies in the council, mysterious protector, Kael claiming her as his mate… and now a stranger who seemed to know things about her she had never told anyone.
The first test came almost immediately.
One of the council leaders, a silver-gray wolf with sharp amber eyes, moved toward Lena. “Human,” he said, his voice dripping with contempt, “you are out of place. You do not belong here. Leave now, or you will regret it.”
Kael’s hand shot out, grabbing the wolf by the shoulder. “Step back,” he warned, his voice a dangerous growl. “She is mine.”
The wolf faltered under Kael’s gaze. “Y-Yes, Alpha,” he muttered, stepping back.
Lena’s knees nearly gave out. The fear, the tension, the knowledge that she had somehow fallen into a world of wolves and power struggles—it was overwhelming.
The cloaked woman moved beside her, whispering, “They underestimate you… all of them. But one day, they will learn.”
Lena looked at her. “I… I don’t even know how to fight. I… I’m weak.”
The woman’s smile was faint, almost sad. “Weak… perhaps. But not for long.”
Before Lena could ask what she meant, the hall doors burst open, and a young wolf guard rushed in, panting. “Alpha! The southern gates are under attack! Rogue wolves—coming to kill the human!”
Kael’s eyes flared, sharp as knives. “Rogue wolves?” he demanded. “They know about her?”
“They do,” the guard said, trembling. “They must have sensed her…”
Kael’s jaw tightened. He turned to Lena. “Stay behind me,” he ordered. “Do not let anyone touch you. Not one of them. Do you understand?”
“I… I understand,” Lena whispered, fear coiling in her stomach.
As Kael moved toward the doors, his cloak whipping behind him, Lena felt a strange pull in her chest. A warmth, a vibration she couldn’t explain.
The cloaked woman caught her gaze. “Do you feel that?” she asked quietly.
Lena nodded. “It… it’s like something inside me is… calling.”
“That is your wolf,” the woman said. “You are not who you think you are.”
Lena blinked. “Not… who I think I am?”
“You are more than human,” the woman said. “And soon, the world will know it. But first… you must survive tonight.”
The hall erupted into chaos as Kael and the palace guards rushed toward the southern gates. Lena stayed behind, shaking, her mind spinning. She didn’t understand her wolf, her mate bond, or the strange protector who seemed to know more than Kael himself.
But one thing was certain: her life had changed forever.
And deep inside, Lena felt a flicker of something she had never felt before: power. Hidden, waiting. Dangerous.
And when she looked down at her hands, she saw a faint glow beneath her skin—a crescent mark that pulsed like a heartbeat.
She gasped.
The cloaked woman bent down slightly, eyes scanning the mark. “So it begins,” she whispered. “The last Royal Luna awakens.”
Lena stared at her own wrist, trembling. “Royal… Luna?”
“Yes,” the woman said. “You are not human. You were never human. And soon, every secret of your past will come to light. Including the one no one—not even the Alpha King—suspected.”
Fear and excitement churned in Lena’s chest. Her life, which had been small and quiet, was gone forever. And the forest of shadows and power that surrounded her… was just the beginning.
Because someone, somewhere, knew the truth about her identity.
