Chapter 3: Awakening in the Shadows

The southern gates of Moonfang Palace shook under the assault. Lena’s heart raced, pounding like a drum in her chest. She could hear the snarls, the growls, the clash of claws on stone. Outside, the rogue wolves were relentless. They had come for her—and Kael. “Stay behind me!” Kael ordered, his voice a growl that made every soldier freeze in obedience. His golden eyes glinted dangerously in the torchlight. “Do not step forward unless I tell you. Do you understand?” Lena nodded, clutching her jacket to her chest. She had never seen such power. The Alpha King moved like a predator among prey, his every step calculated, every movement precise. His presence alone seemed to push back the shadows, but the rogue wolves pressed forward, undeterred. The cloaked woman, standing close beside Lena, whispered, “Tonight, you will see who you are. But you must stay alive long enough to understand it.” Lena’s stomach twisted. “I… I don’t know if I can,” she admitted, her voice small. “You can,” the woman said firmly. “You are stronger than you think. You just don’t know it yet.” The first wave of rogue wolves smashed against the palace gates, claws scraping metal and stone. Kael’s roar echoed across the yard, sharp and terrifying. The wolves froze mid-attack, their instincts screaming that this Alpha was no ordinary king. Kael swung forward, moving faster than Lena could track. Claws tore through the attackers with precision, bodies thrown aside like rag dolls. He was terrifying, magnificent, and impossible to ignore. Lena’s breath caught. She had never seen anyone so strong. She wanted to look away, but she couldn’t. Every instinct screamed that her fate was tied to him—and now, danger pressed so close she could feel it like a physical weight. “Lena!” Kael shouted suddenly. “Stay back!” A rogue wolf had broken through the front lines, claws aimed at her. Lena froze. Panic consumed her. She had no weapon. No training. No experience. Something inside her screamed. The faint glow on her wrist—the crescent mark the cloaked woman had pointed out—pulsed violently. A strange warmth spread through her body, starting at her chest and radiating outward. She gasped, clutching her hands to her heart. “No… this can’t be happening!” she whispered. The rogue wolf lunged. Instinct took over. Lena didn’t think. Her body moved before her mind could catch up. She ducked instinctively, feeling her own energy surge, strange and powerful. A howl ripped from her throat, high and piercing. The air around her seemed to shimmer. The rogue wolf stopped mid-leap, confusion in its eyes. Then, in a blur of white, a wolf emerged from Lena’s shadow. A wolf taller and stronger than any she had ever seen. Pure white, glowing faintly in the torchlight. “Lena!” Kael shouted, eyes widening. The white wolf—hers—moved with lethal precision, knocking the rogue wolves aside. Claws and teeth flashed. Every strike was perfect, every movement controlled. The rogue wolves scattered, yelping in terror, unable to comprehend the sudden eruption of power. Lena’s body shook as her mind caught up. “I… I did that?” she whispered, voice trembling. The power thrummed through her veins, terrifying and intoxicating. “Yes,” the cloaked woman said softly. “That is who you truly are. The last Royal Luna. Stronger than any Alpha. Stronger than even him… if you learn to control it.” Kael approached, his eyes blazing. “Lena… your wolf—” His voice faltered, something rare and vulnerable flashing in his gaze. “You are more than I imagined.” Lena felt a strange pull toward him. The bond she hadn’t understood suddenly made sense. Her heartbeat matched his, every instinct tuned to his presence. Fear, desire, confusion—everything collided inside her chest. “You’re… not human,” Kael said quietly, almost in awe. “Not entirely. How could I not have known?” “I don’t know!” Lena cried, panic and exhilaration battling in her chest. “I just… I never knew… I didn’t even know this could happen!” “You are a Royal Luna,” the cloaked woman said, voice calm and certain. “And your return changes everything.” “Everything?” Lena asked, voice shaking. “What do you mean?” “The kingdom,” the woman said. “The council. Every pack will see you now not just as Kael’s mate, but as a force that could shift the balance of power. You are the last of the bloodline that ruled before even Kael’s family came to power.” Lena’s knees buckled, and Kael caught her. “Stand,” he ordered. “Do not collapse now. You are mine—and I will not lose you.” The rogue wolves regrouped at the edge of the yard, growling, waiting for another chance. Kael’s jaw tightened. “They know. They know what you are. And they will come for you. They will try to kill you before you can claim your power.” “I… I don’t even know how to control it!” Lena shouted. “You will,” Kael said, his voice softening, almost comforting. “I will teach you. But first… survive tonight.” The cloaked woman stepped closer to Lena. “Your control is instinctive right now. But instinct alone won’t be enough. You must trust yourself—and trust him.” “I… I don’t know if I can,” Lena whispered, fear and awe twisting in her chest. “You can,” Kael said firmly. “Because you are mine. And I will not let anyone harm you. Not tonight. Not ever.” Lena swallowed. She had never believed anyone in her life would fight for her like this. And yet, here he was—the Alpha King himself—risking everything for her. Her chest tightened. Desire, fear, and a strange burgeoning strength coiled inside her. “Then… I’ll try,” she whispered. “Good,” Kael said, voice a low growl. “Then we fight together.” The rogue wolves lunged again. Lena’s white wolf emerged fully this time, faster, stronger. Every movement flowed naturally, instinctively. She could feel the power inside her, raw and dangerous. The first rogue wolf that attacked was thrown aside with a single swipe. Lena’s eyes glowed silver as her wolf roared, the sound cutting through the night like lightning. Kael fought beside her, a blur of golden fur and sharp teeth. Together, they moved as one. Every strike Lena made surprised even her. The bond pulsing between them—mate bond, wolf bond—made them stronger, faster, unstoppable. One rogue wolf tried to flank Lena from behind. She spun instinctively, knocking it aside and sending it crashing into the ground. She could hear her own heartbeat, but also Kael’s. She could feel the rhythm of the other wolves around them. “This… this is amazing!” Lena whispered breathlessly. “I… I can feel everything!” “Yes,” Kael said, his voice rough, almost pleased. “This is who you were always meant to be. And the moment has come for the kingdom to see it.” The cloaked woman stepped back into the shadows, watching silently. “And now… the council will learn that their attempts to destroy her were in vain. Because she is not just Kael’s mate. She is more than anyone ever imagined.” By the time the battle ended, the rogue wolves had fled, terrified and defeated. The yard was littered with their remnants—clawed and bloodied, a warning to anyone who dared challenge the palace. Kael turned to Lena, his golden eyes blazing. “Do you understand now?” he asked softly. “You are not weak. You are stronger than them all. And from this night forward… you will never be underestimated again.” Lena swallowed, trembling. Her legs were weak, her heart pounding—but a strange exhilaration ran through her veins. “I… I think I understand,” she whispered. “I… I really am… different.” Kael’s hand brushed her cheek gently. “You are mine,” he said simply. “And together, we will face whatever comes next.” The cloaked woman disappeared into the shadows, a faint smile on her lips. “Soon,” she whispered to herself, “the world will know her true name.” Lena looked at Kael, fear and desire and awe twisting inside her. The palace was still dangerous, the council plotting, enemies everywhere—but for the first time, she felt… ready. She was no longer just a girl. She was the last Royal Luna, and the Alpha King had claimed her.
