I confronted Jack that evening, while we were having a private (late) dinner in the kitchen. "What does the Major have on you?" I asked. He squirmed. That wasn't a very good sign. "Why do you think he has something on me?" Jack asked. "Call it intuition," I said. "Now, are you going to deny he has something on you?" He shifted uncomfortably, but then settled on a decision, straightened his shoulders, and looked me into the eye. "Remember my promise? The one I made you when we began dating again after our breakup?" he said. Well, that wasn't a promising start, that's for sure. "Yes," I said carefully, letting him do the explaining.
