The Contract's Shadow
Chapter one - The Contract's Shadow The sliding glass doors of St. Mercy's Hospital sighed shut behind me, trapping the sterile scent of bleach and grief inside. Outside, the night was restless. I stepped out and the thin drizzle felt like a thousand cold needles pricking my skin , a stark difference from the hospital's artificial warmth. The streetlights bled into holos of pale, sick gold through the mist. My coat felt heavier than it should have. Or maybe it wasn't the coat. Maybe it was the weight of what I had just done. The papers were hidden deep inside my pocket but I didn't need to look at them. My name was already carved into them in a way no human eye could see. My pulse skipped when I thought of the ink he used - it hadn't been black. It shimmered like somthing alive , as if the letters themself were breathing. Which I had signed anyway. For her. For Mom. I started walking towards the far corner of the lot where Dad's old hatchback waited. The rain washed it dull, the once - bright paint now chipped and tired, like everything in my life. I forced myself not to look back at the hospital, not to think about the machines keeping mom alive upstairs, not to think about dad buried 6 feet under, his grave still fresh. You did this for them. This is what love looks like when you have run out of prayers. I almost believed it. That's when I felt it _ quiet shift in the air like the world holding its breath. I wasn't alone. I stopped. My reflection starred back at me from a puddle near my feet, rippeling under the street lights. But behind me, in the warped shimmer of water, there was another shape, a man. Standing too still. When I turned, he was under the farthest streetlamp, umbrella in hand. Charcoal -gray suit. Black tie. Not a single drop of rain touched him. Lucien. Hello didn't walk towards me , he didn't walk so much as simple exist closer. The space between us seemed to fold, the pavement ripping like a disturbed sheet of water, until he suddenly was just there. The distant wail of the ambulance cut- off mid siren, leaving a silence so absolute it hurt my ears. A Predator didn't have to move to be felt, it simply had to be. " Leaving so soon ?" His voice was velvet streched over iron. Smooth, cold, threaded with amusement. It shouldn't have reached me from that far, but it slid into my ears as if it was whispered from just behind me. My stomach turned. " You got what you wanted, " I said, my voice shakind despite my best efforts. " Stay out of my life." He titled his head slightly, as if the words were a curious little joke. " Annie. Annie. You still think of your life as yours. " Something in his eyes flickered then, Like a shadow that didn't match the light. For a heartbeat his face shimmered - the faintest distortion, like reality around him wasn't entirely solid. I blinked and he was human again. Beautiful. Terrible. "What do you want?" I whispered., clutching the edges of my coat pocket where the contract turned against my palm. "I signed it. It's done." He took a step forward. Or maybe he didn't. It was hard to tell. One second he was next to the street lamp ; next moment he felt closer. The night bent around him in ways that made no sense. "You think signing end things?" He said softly. "It begins them." My throat tightened. I thought of mom upstairs, of the rasp of her breathing, "You said she'd live." "I said she'd have a chance," he corrected smoothly, his smile thin. " Life is a complicated arrangement, Annie, you surely know that by now." A car's headlight swept across the lot and in the fleeting flash, I saw his reflection in the puddle next my feet. But it wasn't him. The reflected shape was a silhouette of jagged edges, with eyes that were faintly burning, but growing with a fierce, molten heat , a pair of hungry embers watching me from the depths. I gasped and stumbled back, my heart slamming against my ribs. When I looked up his face was smooth and impassive, those same eyes now dark and placid. He chuckled low, the sound too warm to belong in this world. " Fear suits you." Anger broke through my fear like glass shattering, "don't follow me." I snapped, fumbling for my car keys. "Whatever this is, you don't get to haunt me every second." Lucien's smile widened slowly and sharply. "Annie.... Haunting is what you purchased. You just haven't read the fine print yet." For a moment streeth light above him flickered violently and his shadow streched unnaturally long across the pavement - long enough to reach me. My pulse hammered so loud it drowned out the drizzle. Then the light steadied. He was standing exactly where he'd been, adjusting his cufflinks like any other man on any other night. " You'll see me when you need to," he said and with a blink - he was gone. No footsteps, no sound. Just gone. The night felt heavier without him there. I scrambled into my car, heart beating like a drum in my throat. My hands shook on the steering wheel. For a moment I thought I saw something in my rearview mirror- a flicker of a figure, sitting in the backseat, smiling with that impossible calm. I blinked. The seat was empty. I drove into the night anyway, praying to a God I wasn't sure listened anymore. And behind my prayers was a cold truth: the devil doesn't make deals without collecting his due.
