Epilogus There was a distant sound of gulls, shrill and windswept. Light crept in through a small stone window where, beyond in the grey light, rain drove hard and constant. Voices mumbled incoherently at the verges of Lucius’ mind, and then the pain started, like a wave conjured in the punishing depths of Neptune’s sea. The throbbing grew more intense, and he could feel the wave approaching, his head spinning and then… “Ahhh!” Lucius cried out in the bed where he had been laid beside a burning brazier. “Hold him still or he’ll rip his wounds open again!” a woman’s voice said.
