Rose's POV:
"Please, Sweethearts, you have to help me choose my clothes. You know I'm going to work as a PA for the world's most handsome eligible bachelor. I have to look good when I meet him!“ My best friend, Catherine, blabbers about her new boss.
“Girl, you're already talking our ears off, and you haven't even started working for him yet. I shudder to think what you will be like once you do," I say, unable to tolerate her chatter for a minute longer.
“Catherine, I don't know why you even ask Rose. You know she's always like this. She doesn't care who our boss is. She'll probably stand right in front of him and tell him he is not even that handsome.“ This coming from my other best friend, Eva, as she walks into the room.
They are not only my best friends, but also the only people who consider me their true friend. They were the only friends who offered me a place to stay when I moved out of my orphanage eight years ago.
The three of us have been best friends for a long time. Both Eva and I are orphans. Catherine has her mother, father and elder sister, but they live in Canada. We visit them once every six months. Her parents consider me and Eva part of their family.
This small family is where I find my happiness. I do not want to burden them after they have been so good to me, which is why I haven't told them about my health problems.
A while ago I found out that my Hemoglobin levels are very low and this leaves me constantly feeling weak. The doctor has prescribed some medicine, but I know if I take it my friends will realize something is wrong and once they find out what it is, they will insist that I stop working to rest.
I can't do that as my salary helps pay our bills and we are already middle class. If I stopped working it would affect all our lives.
Let's get back to Catherine. She just got a new job as a PA for some wealthy businessman. I really don't know who he is, but she has literally been jumping around all day in her excitement to meet him. Her boyfriend is even coming down to New York so that he can meet this guy too.
I have often wondered whether Catherine's boyfriend is really straight or if he is actually gay. When I asked him about it, he just dreamily said, "This guy is the most handsome eligible bachelor in the world."
Eva is also very excited to meet Catherine's new boss. She has been pestering poor Catherine all day with questions about when exactly he will arrive and when she'll be able to meet him. I don't know what is the matter with them.
Despite my misgivings, I must admit that I feel happy too. I don't know the reason for this, but I'm positive that it has nothing to do with the so called “most handsome bachelor in the world."
“Don't flatter yourselves. He won't even give you a second glance. He is only interested in girls with class. Girls like us, for example." Zoe sneers as she sashays through the door followed by her closest friend Helen. Where Zoe goes, Helen follows.
I shrink back instinctively as they enter. Helen and Zoe are both bullies who enjoy nothing more than terrifying people. They have made me their target ever since I moved in. I suspect it's because they know I won't stand up to them since I have nowhere else to go.
When Catherine and Eva aren't home Zoe and Helen make me do all their work and if they aren't satisfied they beat me with belts. I do not tell Eva and Catherine, because I know they will demand that Helen and Zoe leave and we could never afford the apartment without their contributions to the rent.
My only escape from their torment is when I am at work. I work as a chef in a medium class restaurant. I also cook for all the members in the house as none of them know how to cook. Eva and Catherine will help me prepare the meals, but Helen and Zoe just sit and watch. They don't even help to clean up after the meal.
"Just shut up both of you! You can't intimidate us. Oh, by the way, I heard both of you tried to seduce my boyfriend, but it didn't work. Guess you're not as pretty as you thought after all," Catherine retorts smugly.
“The most handsome bachelor won't look twice at your plastic bodies," Eva states triumphantly.
“Well he definitely won't be interested in Rose, either. You can be sure of that." Helen shoots back.
“Leave Rose out of this," Catherine and Eva say at the same time. This is why they are best friends. They just can't tolerate anyone that insults me.
“And get the hell out of our room!" Eva yells.
“Fine, but you'll see I will get him to fall in love with me one day," Zoe challenges before leaving the room with Helen on her heels.
“They think they are celebrities," Catherine sneers, causing us all to laugh out loud.
We decide to go to bed as Catherine needs to be up early for her first day of work in the morning. As I get under the covers, I still have that same happy feeling mixed with excitement for Catherine's new job. I have to wake up early to make breakfast and also pack lunch for Catherine. Eva and I will eat at the restaurant as she'll join me for lunch since she works just a block away from the restaurant.
I just pray that if Catherine's boss is a good man, than Zoe shouldn't reach him. I don't know god what you'll do but please help that poor boss, Zoe is dangerous. She would hurt him. Ok…but what if he is dangerous…my subconscious mind questioned me and I thought for few seconds before replying…then he can protect himself, right.
