CHAPTER 52
NOVA'S POV
My knees buckle slightly, with my eyes still fixed on Killian. There is no way I am looking away. My hands are balled into fists at my side. Anything to make me look grounded.
Anything to hide the tears that are threatening to spill. I am not scared of Killian. I am just there, watching every single thing that he is doing at that point.
He c***s his head to the side, taking a step towards me. I don't take one back.
“You're adapting faster than I thought you would,” he says, and I try as much as I can, not to react or ask any questions. Hell, I can't even tell if he is complimenting me or not. I just want to be far away from him.
Killian isn't even down talking. This time he has a smirk on his face. “You know, this whole attack wasn't just to make Cassian struggle.”
At that statement, my eyes go wide. He couldn't possibly mean that he is behind the whole thing, could he?
No, no.
“It was to push you,” he continues saying. “It was for you to have some kind of force driving you. To show you what you can actually achieve. And you haven't even achieved your full potential.”
He smiles, and my head starts hurting immediately. My eyesight goes blurry, and that only makes him smile even more.
The noise from the battleground has died down. Does that mean that things have come to an end already? Does that mean that Cassian is going to come and find me?
“It worked, didn't it?” Killian asks. Before I know what is even happening, he is right in front of me, and he wraps his fingers around one of my arms. I can't bring myself to move away.
What is he doing to me?
“I can help you, Nova,” he says. I struggle to open my mouth. To tell him anything. To tell him to go back to his pack. But another part of me wants his help. All my life, I don't even know who I am. I am tired of asking myself that question.
“I can give you everything you need, Nova. I know everything you've wanted since you got to this place. The answers. The training. The control.”
I feel myself go weaker by the second.
“Please,” I find myself saying, as he smiles, tipping my chin with his index finger, making me look at him.
“It's not for free,” he says, and just for a second, I can see the deviousness flash in his eyes.
“What do you want?” I ask.
“You'll have to come with me,” he says, and before I can even argue, he speaks up again. “You don't have to worry. You won't stay in my pack forever. Just long enough for you to learn everything that I'll be teaching you. Long enough for you to understand what you are.”
I open my mouth to speak, and the mate bond suddenly flickers.
Cassian is coming. Relief washes over me. At the same time, I am panicking.
Killian knows that Cassian is coming. I can tell through the way his demeanour changes.
He leans in. “If you stay here much longer, you'll become something they will always fear.” His smile widens. “But if you come with me, you'll become something they follow.”
I swallow hard.
I don't respond. But at the same time, I don't say no.
I feel Cassian's footsteps before he even gets to where we are. He takes in the sight of the both of us, and he immediately pulls me behind him.
He looks like he is more than willing to crush his brother's bones within seconds.
“What did you tell her?” He snarls.
Killian doesn't even react. He still has his eyes on me, like he is waiting for me to give him the answer to his offer at that point.
He shrugs, in response to Cassian's question. “The truth.”
I step away from Cassian. I am no longer behind him. This time I am standing right beside him.
Cassian turns to look at me, like he is waiting for me to tell him exactly what Killian told me.
“He's not wrong,” I say in a whisper, but I am sure that Cassian hears me. The change in his expression shows everything.
He is more than hurt. But at that point, I don't even know how I am supposed to react. The other part of me that wants answers is winning.
Cassian wraps his fingers around my wrist. “You're not going anywhere with him.”
I yank my hand away from his. “You don't get to decide that.”
The bond reacts immediately, and I can feel the push and pull. I don't know how I am not on the floor from the pain.
Cassian grabs me again, and this time, I can tell that he is desperate.
“Please, don't do this,” he says, and I feel myself shatter from the inside.
My voice is less than a whisper as I speak again.
“Then stop treating me like something that might break.”
He goes silent immediately, and I can tell that he is worried. For me and himself. All the gears in his head are turning. He is trying so hard not to react. But whatever decision that he makes at that point, is going to decide if I am going to go with Killian, or trust myself with him.
He looks more than torn, and I want to take my words back more than anything in the world. But I don't.
Killian suddenly comes to stand beside me, like he is about to take me away. Like whatever is happening at that point doesn't matter. He knows I am going to go with him either way.
Cassian looks up at the both of us, and his eyes are red.
Killian clicks his tongue against the roof of his mouth.
“Clock's ticking, Cassian.”
For the first time, Cassian looks like he doesn't know what he is supposed to say.
