CHAPTER 38 CASSIAN'S POV Let this slide. Let this slide. Everything in me is screaming the same thing, but I can't bring myself to do that. I am already hurting myself, and the only thing I want to do is ensure that blood is flowing through Killian's nose. But at the same time, I just want to step away. Why the f**k can't I be the bigger person now? Nova is talking, but I am not even listening to her. My arms are already in the air as Killian speaks. He still has the stupid smirk on his face. I feel a tiny hand on my back, and that manages to make me stop. I am breathing hard, as I try to control everything in me. Nova's hand is still on my back, like she is scared that I am going to throw her off. Even in my next life, I know that I can't do any of that. Her hand is finally steady on my back, and I pull away from Killian. He is still smirking. “She has control over you. Isn't that nice?” With that, he walks away, and I don't even say a word. Maybe. Just maybe allowing him to stay in the pack is going to be a big mistake. Either way, I know that he isn't going to leave. It doesn't matter what I am going to tell him. Nova isn't being attacked, and I haven't gotten any messages from the Broker. Killian is something that I can handle any time. “Let's leave,” Nova is already saying, like this is something that she is used to. “He doesn't have any right to touch you like that,” I say, and she closes her eyes. I watch as she seems to shiver. She opens her eyes again, and they shine in gold. She is angry. She is shaken. It doesn't matter how much she tries to hide it. “And you managed to handle things. He won't try it again.” She plasters a fake smile on her lips. “Now, if you'll let me, I would like to take a few books with me. Now, come let's get your wound bandaged up.” That is when I look down at my hands. At the way it is bleeding. I watch her as she takes the books that she wants. I never let anybody touch my books. But she is Nova. So why the f**k not? She turns back as she heads out of the library, like she wants to make sure that I am following her. I am right behind her. By the time we get to the room, she sets the books down carefully on the chair. “You haven't been to my room,” I say, and she looks over at me, as she fetches the first aid box from her bathroom. “I haven't,” she agrees, kneeling in front of me, as she opens the box, rummaging through the first aid materials. “You'll be moving there soon, won't you?” I ask. There is a smirk threatening to slip from her lips. “How about tonight?” she asks in a whisper. “Perfect,” I whisper back. By the time I look down at her, my hands are fully bandaged. I tip her chin, making her look at me. “I’ll ask the maids to pack your things to my room. I hope I see you there tonight.” “You're going out?” she asks, and I give her a small nod. “I'll be right back. I just have to settle a few things.” She narrows her eyes at me, and she looks like she is about to argue. Either way, she doesn't. I try hard not to ball my hands into fists again. The last thing I want is to soil her pretty handiwork. I walk across the pack, and I can hear the whispers again. Are they ever going to stop? I have my knuckles in the air, ready to knock when the door is pulled open from inside. Killian is the first person that I see. Just the person that I am here to see. He moves to the side, gesturing for me to walk in. “I can smell the anger. I just knew it had to be you.” I walk into his apartment, and I am more than thankful that Beatrice isn't there. “You know exactly why I'm here,” I say as soon as I get to the living room. “I don't,” he says, folding his hands across his chest. “What's the actual reason for you and Beatrice coming?” I ask, and he smirks. “Well, I already told you, didn't I? I heard that my brother has a new mate, and I just came to check.” I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. “You know that's a lie. You have another reason.” He shakes his head. “Come on, little brother.” I feel my body stiffen. “Don't. Don't call me that.” “You know,” Killian says. “I'm shocked that you would even take the time out to get mated to someone else. Considering the fact that your end is near.” “And you're glad for some reason.” “You know I've been looking forward to it my whole life. You don't have to act shocked.” I want to ask him what more he wants to take. But the words don't find their way out of my throat. “Keeping Nova here is a waste. She has a lot more potential somewhere else.” “What do you mean?” I ask, taking a step towards him. He doesn't move. “I mean, when you're gone, you're going to leave me with no choice—” I don't even know what I am doing as I push his chest, slamming him against the wall. My fingers grab his collar, as I pull him so close to me that I can feel his breath on my face. “Don’t you dare look at her again.” “Or what?” he asks, leaning in even further. Rage floods my veins. He isn't scared. This is fun for him. He leans in even further. “You don't even own her,” Killian says, his voice low. “Even if the bond says you do.” I feel myself going weak. Because it feels like he is telling the truth. I can't push away the thought that he is spitting facts. Killian slowly takes my hands off his collar, and he gently pushes me away from him. “You're not the only one that the council has plans for.”
