Chapter three

Chapter three In Miguel’s hands was a pistol. Without thinking twice, he pulled the trigger, and a bullet pierced through Kelvin’s heart. Splash! Blood. It was her fiancé’s blood. Kelvin's body crumbled to the floor, and Ellie frozen on the spot. There was no regret or remorse in Miguel’s eyes. He let out a grin as if he had just added another car to his collection. Ellie nearly wet her pants as the man smirked dangerously and strode to her side. She knew her life had come to an end after witnessing the brutal killing of a mafia boss. But to survive, Ellie knew there was only one way: she had to put her acting skills to use. Ellie dragged her feet closer to the wall, her fingers lightly brushing the textured surface beside her. Her posture was upright, her head held high, her hands dangling in mid-air as she made her way to one of the bathroom stalls. Her hand found the cool metal door. With a gentle push, she stepped in, sat on the toilet, and started to pee without bothering about the man and her fiancé's corpse in front of her. “She is blind?” Miguel muttered. “Who is there?!” She screamed and immediately shut the door. Behind the closed door, Ellie took a deep breath. Her hands trembled, and fresh tears began to fall down her cheeks as she remembered how Kelvin was killed. She got up from the toilet. She opened the door, hoping Miguel was gone, but the moment she did, the man was standing straight in the middle of the room. Miguel moved closer to her with very light footsteps. Just a breath away, he questioned, “Are you really blind, or are you pretending?” Hearing that, cold chills ran through her spine. Could he see through her? However, Ellie knew she couldn’t be caught, so she flinched back into action. “Who are you? What are you still doing here?” Ellie screamed, trying hard not to let her voice tremble. “I think you are the one who trespassed. This is the male restroom,” Miguel smirked devilishly. Ellie turned pale. She knew that. She had only come because of Kelvin’s scream. Ellie suddenly gasped, looking apologetic. “I’m sorry, I was going to the female restroom. I made a mistake since I am BLIND.” *** It had been two weeks since Kelvin's death. Ellie couldn’t get herself together. She was still in shock. Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks at the thought of everything. How she lost her peace in a single day. She had to continue pretending to be blind, even with a fake doctor’s report. When the cops arrived at the scene, Ellie was the only witness. To avoid getting caught up in the whole situation with both Miguel and the cops, she had to continue faking being blind. The only person who knew she wasn’t blind was Matte. “You have to stay quiet.” Ellie could clearly remember Ryan’s warning before he vanished into thin air. More tears rolled down her cheeks even at the thought of it. A knock came on her door at that moment, interrupting her thoughts. The door was pushed open, and Matte walked in, looking so worried. “I’m so sorry I came back late, Ellie. There were a lot of issues.” Matte told her locking the door. “What’s it? Is anything wrong again?” She raised a brow filled with worries. Ellie couldn’t confess to the police. She had to wait for the cops to investigate on their own after giving them little cues, but it was as if they weren’t planning to catch Miguel on purpose. “It’s not about the killer. It’s about the house. The cops said they will be seizing all his properties, including the house you stay in.” Matte told her. “But Kelvin is the victim. He was killed mercilessly by that bastard! How could that happen?” Ellie cried out in anger. “It’s the government order, and there is nothing we can do,” Matte told her. Ellie's face dropped completely, and a tear streamed down her cheek. “So where am I supposed to stay?” Ellie packed her clothes into her leather bags; she had to vacate the house since it had been seized by the government. Tears rolled down her cheek as she kept thinking of Kelvin, her first and only love. How is she supposed to live without him? More fresh tears streamed down her cheek at the thought of where she would be staying. She is penniless, and Matte’s boyfriend is around; she doesn’t want to inconvenience him any longer. She dragged her luggage out of the house. The chauffeur immediately came to assist her. “I heard that you are blind. You shouldn’t try to do this on your own.” The man said and helped her drop the luggage into the trunk before helping the woman, who wasn’t blind at all, into the car. Ellie looked out of the car, adjusting her black glasses, the one matte got for her, along with the walking stick to make it all look perfect. A message popped in on her phone. She took a peek at Matte’s message, apologising for not being able to help her with the packing. She dropped her phone and gazed out of the window. The car finally stopped in front of the familiar house. Ellie could clearly remember how she had vowed never to step her feet in there again when she packed out, but she couldn’t believe she was back there again, penniless. The chauffeur Matte hired helped her out of the car along with her luggage. He helped her to the door before leaving. “Take good care of yourself, ma’am.” He bowed and left. Ellie's fingers wandered around the door, and she eventually pressed the doorbell after some moment. “Haha, see who we have here, the blind woman!” Elle was welcomed by Vivian's voice the moment the door was opened. “Please move out of my way,” Ellie said coldly before she struggled in. Around the Anderson house, a black car was packed there, and the haired, hefty man was watching Ellie as she arrived. After some minutes, he took out his cell phone and placed a call to his boss. “Sir, I think she is really blind.” He reported. “Good. You can return to the warehouse.” A voice replied coldly and hung up from the other end. After two days. Ellie sat at the foot of her bed in her crumpled room. When Vivian arrived at their home with her mother, she told her father she wanted Ellie’s doom, and her father John didn’t hesitate to chase Ellie out of her room. Even though there were other rooms, Ellie chose to move into the smallest crumbled room in the house, hoping her father would see her pain and get back her room for her, but the man didn’t care. Ellie also never bothered to move out ever since then. Ellie was lost in her thoughts and didn’t know when the door of her room pushed open and Vivian barged in with a smirk on her face. “Hey rascal. Is it true that you lost your sight or you are just trying to get Father’s favour?" Vivian had a mockery expression. Ellie ignored her like a pesky bug. “Are you ignoring your jinx? You should be grateful I told Mom to let you in! Do you think she would want you to jinx us with your bad luck?” She scorned her face. Ellie kept on ignoring her, managing to annoy her stepsister completely. Vivian hated being ignored. “Are you dumb too? Are you going to keep ignoring me, huh?” She yelled. Her eyes sparkled with anger. “Just get out of my room,” Ellie told her. “Well, I’m not going anywhere until you tell me if you are really blind or not!” She stomped her feet. Vivian went over to her little desk, and she grabbed her diary on her table, flipping through the papers. Hearing the loud sound of the paper, Ellie flinched from where she was. “What are you doing!” She screamed. “What does it look like I’m doing jinx?” Vivian smirked at her face. A thought suddenly came to her. She moved his eyes towards her eyeball, trying to see if Ellie was really blind, but she didn’t expect Ellie to bite her fingers instead. “Argh!” She cried out in pain. “You aren’t blind, right? You are just pretending!” She screamed, blowing some air on her fingers. Ellie ignored her and returned to the bed, but she didn’t expect Vivian to pull her hair from behind. “Let go of me!” Ellie winced out in pain at her tight grip. “I won’t you jinx!” She spun in anger and pulled Vivian’s hair as well, leaving her in pain. “Stop calling me that!” She screamed. Vivian was fond of calling her that, and she hated it. “That’s exactly what you are! You killed the innocent man just like you killed your mother!” Vivian screamed at Ellie's face. “Let go right now!” They continued fighting and screaming. Just then Ellie’s door was pushed open with full force. “What are you both doing?" A figure stormed in with anger. Ellie looked at the door and watched the woman in her early 50s storm in, Leah, Vivian’s mother. Vivian immediately let go of Ellie, and she burst into tears. “Mom, Ellie started it; she pulled my hair just because I was looking out for her.” She cried to her mother’s ears. Leah's stern gaze immediately fell on Ellie. Ellie knew that was trouble. “I-it’s a lie. She started it.” She mumbled, but Leah failed to listen to her. “This is why I didn’t want you to come back!” She paused and took a deep breath. It looked like she was trying to control her anger, surprising Ellie a little. After taking a pause, she continued. “Just get dressed and come outside. Someone is here to see you.” Ellie’s brows snapped together. Someone? No one knows there except for Matte, and he would be busy at work. Matte would even call before going there to find her. Who could it be? “Who is it?” Her brows raised vividly. “Your husband-to-be, you jinx!” Vivian fired at her face. Leah immediately frowned, and she turned to Vivian, scolding her. “Vivian, I told you not to say that to her face.” Ellie was left in more darkness. Husband to be? “W-what are you both talking about?” She stuttered. “Look, daughter..” Leah moved closer to Ellie, grabbing her hands. Ellie immediately realised something was wrong. Leah had never called her daughter. “Someone offered to marry you despite your condition. He is here to fetch.” Ellie was left in shock. Did they plan her marriage behind her back? “I never told you I wanted to get married! I’m not getting married.” Ellie took her hands away from her. “You have to, Ellie. Your father's company is at stake. His business is crumbling, and this man offered to help us. He offered to invest in his company.” Leah added. Ellie’s face dropped completely. It was all about them. It was never about her. Leah inhaled sharply and continued. “You have to marry him. You can’t even secure any job in this state. Do you think you will be living here forever?” “I will figure my life out by myself, but I’m not going to get married to any man I have no idea about!” Ellie’s refused strongly. Leah turned to Vivian, and she signalled to her. The two didn’t know Ellie was seeing everything perfectly well, but before she could react, they started grabbing her. “Let me go, you fucker!” She screamed, slapping their hands, which held her tightly. They didn’t let go of her until they dragged her to the living room. In the living room, Ellie found her father on his feet, speaking with a man who looked rather familiar. He sat on the chair like a king seated on his throne, and right behind him were a bunch of hefty bodyguards. Ellie flinched back, and a cold sweat immediately broke out of her the moment she realised who the man was. Miguel Yates! It was him, the same man who killed her fiancé. “Ellie, meet your husband,” her father turned to her with a wide smile. “Husband?” She squinted her eyes. Leah put in. “Don’t forget that she is blind; she can’t see him.” She said it with mockery. Ellie watched the man get on his feet, and he walked up to her side. She found her breath sagging. “Our daughter is pretty, right?” Leah smiled more. “Yeah, she is indeed pretty.” Miguel's eyes scanned through her from head to toe. “Ellie, make sure to treat your husband right,” Leah added with a wide smile plastered on her face. Miguel leaned closer to her ears and whispered with a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. “Husband isn't the best word, honey.”
