Chapter 36 The plane landed with a thud and a screech of wheels on the wet tarmac at Melbourne Airport and began taxiing towards the gate. When the announcement we could switch our phones on came up, I immediately rang Josie. ‘Dem?’ ‘Josie. I’ve just got off the plane. It’ll be at least a half an hour before I make it through customs and get my bag. How’s Dad?’ ‘He’s still in intensive care. I’ll tell you more when I see you.’ I cleared customs and waited for my bag at the carousel, my head foggy from lack of sleep. Not only was my heart full of worry about Dad, but from London to Melbourne, I was seated next to an older Italian woman who was a more anxious flyer than me.
