Chapter 9

“Well then, so this is the famous Reno I have been hearing about.” She thrusted her blade upon my neck. “The Troll King Slayer.” This girl was dangerous. I pushed myself as far back to avoid the knife as it tasted my skin. “I heard you were strong, but you’re still a mage.” She looked over at my hand. “I would refrain from casting spells in this position if I were you.” What were her intentions, could I talk my way out of this? I looked at her, noticing a bag that sat by her foot before hearing a whistle in the distance. They were shouting, it was coming from the direction of the town. “It seems our time is up, she moved the dagger from by my neck until we met again.” She moved in closer as I tried to pull away, placing a kiss upon my check. “What!?” Caremila protested. “Come into the north side of the forest alone,” she whispered.  The Whistling Wolf leaped off me and disappeared in the distance I heard her steps until it was too far to gauge. The wolf howl before fading out and I tightened my fist as the guards drew near. Tsk, I didn’t take this girl serious enough. I thought she would be a piece of cake. My hand touched my neck as the guards untied those that were around us. “Where did she go?” “Is she still here?” “Stay on guard.” I looked in the distance at the trees. She was gone. Why weren’t we dead? Was she mocking us? * Seth and I sat at a table surrounding us were the town mayor, the guild master, an envoy for the empire and various other merchants and prominent people in the town. “Your telling me before the Whistling Wolf ran off that they defeated all the guards in the town without actually harming anyone?” “They were no casualties.” “How many of them were they?” “No one knows at the moment to confirm that.” Maracar slammed his fist on the table. “Damn it.” “Maracar calm down,” the guild master responded. “It was one,” I replied, causing everyone in the room to turn to me. “One? impossible we saw nothing of the sort.” “One person couldn’t cause so much damage.” “Who is that kid, anyway?” “Don’t you know that’s Reno, from the village.” “The Troll King Slayer.” Every person at the table was in deep discussion among themselves. “One you say,” the guild master said, stroking his beard. “Did you see this person?” “Yes.” “Was it a man or a woman?” “I am not sure, I only saw a faint outline, not enough to reveal the person.” “Magic?” the guild master muttered to himself. “It seems if what Reno says is correct that this person is a serious threat to the economy of the empire.” “A genuine threat? The county could not receive tax to the empire for several months after that and with the war with the other races on our very borders, the empire---.” “I will go.” “Alone?” the guildmaster said. My eyes turned to Seth for a moment as it lingered. “Yes, alone.” “I can beat the person if I am alone.” Maracar replied, “I have seen his ability the boy is indeed strong but we should tag along behind him just in case as safety.” “I see no problem.” My eye shifted to Seth once more as I whispered to him. “Do to me what I did to you by the river.” I noticed Maracar’s smile. There was something devious about it. What exactly was he thinking?
