[013]
The corridor wasn't very long.
Even though Jason and Zoe walked slowly with caution, they still reached the end of the corridor one minute later.
The closer they got to the corner of the corridor, the more distinct the music and conversation became.
At the corner, they tightened their grips on the weapons in their hands, took a deep breath, prepared themselves, and slowly poked their heads round the corner, looking inside.
What they saw after they turned the corner wasn't scary at all, but warm and quiet. It took them by surprise, as they'd just been hunted down by hordes of zombies and had almost died as a result.
This place however looked like a convenience store.
The convenience store was very spacious and bright, and resembled a small round square. All the products were hung on the walls. The cashier was in the middle of the circular square, and there was a hot blond wearing a red miniskirt and a white hat, wearing slightly old-fashioned makeup.
The blond wore a big smile and was extremely warm to every customer. No matter how trivial the customers’ questions were, she would patiently answer them.
Jason saw many doors entering the small circular square, all of which were connected to a corridor of their own. There weren't many customers here, perhaps only about twenty people as far as he could see. However, people kept coming and going.
Most of the customers were quite weird. Some of them were clean, but others were covered in blood. Some were dressed in suits and ties as if they'd just come from a party and achieved great success, while others carried heavy machine guns in their hands and were covered in the smell of gunpowder and sweat, panting as they walked.
Although they were all in the same space, it felt like they were completely out of sync. It looked as if these people had come from a different time and space, but had arrived here for the same purpose.
Perhaps because Jason’s gaze lingered for too long, but very soon, several people started casting unfriendly warning glances at him.
“Kid, just buy your stuff and get out of here. If you keep staring at me like that, I’ll gouge your eyes out!” said a man carrying a heavy machine g*n.
He threw his g*n to the ground with great force, making a harsh banging sound which disgusted a lot of people.
After dropping his weapon, the man walked straight towards the west of the square. Jason daringly continued to observe him.
There were many blue-white light bands on the wall in the west side, shaped like various weapons. Most of them were weapons of mass destruction that Jason couldn’t recognize.
It was a large wall of machine guns, shotguns, and even light explosive weapons. Beside each weapon was an electronic screen, which showed detailed descriptions of various weapons.
Jason was fascinated by the whole wall of weapons. When he looked at the g*n in his hand, he immediately felt it was quite pathetic, and was almost too embarrassed to show it.
Jason and Zoe followed the man quietly and saw him looking at the wall for a while before picking up a light band hanging up high on the wall, which looked like a sniper rifle. He grabbed it and pulled it hard from the wall. As soon as the light band came into his hand, it transformed into a heavy physical g*n.
The man walked over to the cashier with the rifle slung over his shoulder.
The salesperson smiled and said to him, “Hello, Mr. T, the price of this GX-600 sniper rifle is 150,000 points and the maximum number of bullets is 500. Once the bullets are used up, the sniper rifle will be useless. There is also no warranty. Are you sure you want to buy it?”
The man named Mr. T seemed to be tired of the sales pitch. Before the salesperson could finish talking, Mr. T positioned his eye over a scanner in front of the salesperson.
The circular, high-tech scanner quickly recognized his iris and confirmed the successful payment with a ‘ding.’
After paying, Mr. T quickly walked into a corridor with his new sniper rifle, looking like he had a vicious intent to kill everyone.
“150,000 points. That's... 150,000 dollars?” Jason said, calculating in his head. He was shocked. “That’s way too expensive!”
Jason and Zoe lingered in front of the armory. There could see weapons ranging from 2,000 points to 10 million points, almost dazzling in front their eyes.
“You... how many points do you have?” Zoe asked Jason.
“I only have 1,600 points,” Jason replied before laughing in embarrassment. 1,600 points wasn't even enough to afford the cheapest g*n on the wall.
Even so, Zoe looked surprised. “You have 1,600 points? Where do they come from? Didn’t you just log into this app for the first time like me?”
Jason explained, “It was my first time, but I saw people giving me tips and gifts, so I must've got the 1,600 points from someone else.”
Upon hearing Jason’s explanation, Zoe remembered some strange gift signs appearing below her field of vision as she blew the zombies to pieces, but she didn’t have time to notice them at the time. After thinking about this, she checked her livestream and found that she had over 500 points now.
Even so, neither her nor Jason could buy anything. Worse still, they couldn’t transfer any points to each other’s accounts, otherwise they might've been able to buy the cheapest g*n with all their points pooled together.
In addition to the armory, the other walls in the small circular square also had other items marked with prices hung on them.
Extremely delicious food, gorgeous and durable outfits, and even combat vehicles...
There were outlines made of portable light bands on the wall, but on the electronic screens next to them were the details of the physical weapons and their staggering prices.
This place was a huge supply station, but the supply wasn't free. Instead, it charged a huge number of points.
It turned out that points were the currency in this World of Terror.
Jason was like a country bumpkin entering a metropolis, looking around and shocked by the dazzling and dauntingly high prices.
As a newcomer, he hadn’t completed any tasks yet, and all his points had come from tips alone.
He could barely afford any of the cool weapons, but he didn’t gain nothing from walking around.
He found one thing that would be very useful for him, a robotic arm.
This robotic arm happened to perfectly fit his broken forearm. Although the electronic screen showed that this was just a “basic robotic arm”, which only offered a “strength” buff, this was a gift from heaven for Jason who had just lost his forearm and suffered from all the inconveniences that brought.
Most importantly, this basic robot arm cost just 999 points and he could afford it!
Jason was deeply attracted to it. The 999 points meant 999 dollars. He had never spent so much money on anything in one go, except for his college tuition!
However, if he could get an arm out of this transaction, his life would be much more convenient.
Besides, the robotic arm had a “strength” buff. What a great deal!
After thinking for a moment, Jason gritted his teeth and decided to buy it!
He pulled the robotic arm off the wall. The blue-white light faded and was replaced by an exquisite physical robotic arm.
Jason marveled at its heavy weight and subtlety, which completely blew his mind when he took a closer look at it.
He took the robotic arm over to the cashier. The sales lady smiled at him with the same smile she'd shown to Mr. T earlier, which made people wonder whether it was because of her super professional etiquette or because the woman was in fact an AI in a human skin.
“Hello, Master Jason,” the woman who inexplicably knew his name said. “This JT-01 basic robotic arm costs 999 points, and has a stamina of 30. It will be automatically scrapped when it's worn out. There is also no warranty. Are you sure you want to buy it?”
Jason didn’t know what stamina 30 meant, but he knew he needed the robotic arm now.
“Yes, I want to buy it!” answered Jason.
The salesperson replied, “Okay. Please stare into this electronic scanner for three seconds.”
Jason’s throat constricted slightly. He looked into the sensor of the electronic scanner as instructed. Soon after, a crisp sound rang out, indicating that he had completed the purchase. At the same time, he noticed that the points below his field of vision had been reduced from 1,600 to 601.
When he completed the purchase of the robotic arm, a small line of text appeared before his eyes.
[Will you bind the JT-01 basic robotic arm?]
Jason said “yes”, and the robotic arm instantly disappeared from his palm and automatically attached itself to his broken forearm.
Jason was startled that the robotic arm was so intelligent. In a second, he felt like his broken arm had grown back, and he regained a real connection from the palm of his hand to his fingertips.
Zoe was also amazed by the scene, watching Jason deftly control the five fingers in mid-air. Apart from the arm not being made of human bones and skin, its dexterity and smoothness made him feel like it was exactly the same as his own fingers.
Jason said, “This... is incredible.”
As he clenched his fist, the robotic arm closed tightly, letting out a mechanical noise. At the same time, he felt incredibly strong.
The sense of security that the strength gave him was incomparable!
Jason had spent a lot of money on the robotic arm, but felt rather good about it. However, he wouldn’t know if it was worth the money until it was tested in a true battle.
Jason looked at the robotic arm and smiled. “I hope it isn’t a bad purchase.”
Zoe didn’t have many points, but since she'd arrived at the supply station and this was a rare opportunity, she wanted to buy something regardless.
She looked at the area with food and water.
Originally, she hadn't felt hungry and didn't have time to feel thirsty when she was desperately fighting the zombies. But the moment she'd rested and seen the food and water, she immediately felt famished and her throat was dry. Physical discomfort began to stir in her.
Jason followed her gaze and looked at the area.
Food wasn’t a problem for him as he could resist hunger, but he had sweat too much and was now a little thirsty.
Licking his bitter cracked dry lips which had b****y wounds on them, he looked at the cost of the mineral water.
A 300-milliliter bottle of mineral water cost 100 points, which meant 100 dollars!
It this price it clearly wasn't water, but gold.
But...
Then Jason thought, someone else had rewarded him the points, so it was kind of like spending an unexpected fortune. If he used them to enjoy himself, it should be fine. For the time being, he was confident that he could still earn more points by completing tasks or getting tips!
Generously, Jason bought two bottles of water and handed one to Zoe.
He said, “If I’m right, everything here can be set to bound or unbound. I didn’t bind this bottle of water, so I should be able to give it to you.”
Zoe raised an eyebrow at him, feeling a bit surprised. “You're feeling that generous?”
“You are an important companion for me,” Jason said as he smiled at Zoe and unscrewed the bottle cap.
The robotic arm was quite slippery, and in his excitement, Jason didn't notice he was using the new arm with its strength buff to unscrew the bottle cap. He only gave it a gentle twist, but ended up breaking the whole water bottle. He hadn't even taken one sip of the 100-dollar golden water before it spilled all over the floor.
Jason screamed, “What the f**k?!”
The people watching this scene laughed out loud, and the quiet sound of laughter emanated around him.
Jason was at a loss for words.
While standing their angrily, he heard a beep sound of someone shopping.
He turned around to see that Zoe had paid 100 points for another bottle of water. She considerately unscrewed the cap and handed it to Jason.
“Don’t spill it this time. It’s very expensive,” she said.
Jason didn’t expect Zoe to be so generous. When he looked at her, he caught a seductive and meaningful gaze in return.
Thank... you...” said Jason.
He had rarely received help from others, and was now being helped by an incredibly beautiful woman. This made him quite tongue-tied when he thanked Zoe.
