Chapter 10

2101 Words
Jason found a stone and handed it to Lily, asking her to draw a map in the dusty ground showing the way from the warehouse to the underground waterway. After Lily finished drawing, Jason could see they would have to walk about half a block from the warehouse to the entrance of the waterway. Having got the route, he went to the window and looked out with his half his face. It wouldn't be easy to walk half a block. It looked like the zombies had a habit of gathering together and acting in groups, but occasionally they would walk in twos and threes, scattering and wandering around the entire block. The street they needed to walk down was always filled with zombies, who were walking nonstop. They could kill all the zombies on the road and fight their way out with violence, but that would definitely make a lot of commotion. The streets in this block were narrow and short. If there was any movement, other zombies nearby would hear it and they'd likely be quickly surrounded. Lily had only drawn a simple map from here to the underground waterway. Jason and the others had no knowledge of the layout of the other places in the block. Lily didn’t know much about it either, because it wasn't a block where she'd previously lived. If they went the wrong way and got surrounded by zombies, they would be dead meat. After analyzing the current situation, everyone fell silent. Dylan was the first to speak. He shrugged and smiled lightly, “Well, I don’t think we need to take the risk. Weapons are very important, but if we die along the way, it won't be worth it, will it?” Zoe looked askance at him as if she were looking at an incurable fool, “Do you think you can survive just by standing around here? First of all, there isn't a drop of water or a grain of rice in the storehouse. No one knows where the entrance to this unfortunate world is. I know you’re used to sitting around and waiting to die, but don’t take your stupidity for granted. Don’t make others do stupid things with you.” Her words hurt Dylan's pride, but because the b***h had a dagger and her brat partner had a dark g*n, Dylan didn't dare quarrel with Zoe. He could only smile obsequiously. “Alright then, Miss Zoe, I’d love to hear your plan. What do you think we should do to get around those damned zombies and get to the underground waterway?” Jason, who hadn't spoken yet, kept his eyes fixed on the corner of the room as Dylan and Zoe argued with each other. He seemed to have suddenly discovered something, and his eyes lit up. He quickly walked over and lifted a ragged cloth whose original color was unrecognizable. The dust that rose up made everyone cough, but when they saw what was underneath the cloth, none of them complained about what Jason had done. Instead, they let out a sound of awe. “A motorcycle! Wow!” “It’s really a motorcycle!” Jason said excitedly, flicking the dust off its seat cushion, “I can't believe I found such a wonderful treasure! Thank God!” Dylan walked over and kicked the front wheel of the motorcycle, then laughed, “You don’t think someone would leave an intact motorcycle here, do you? You’re so naive, boy! How could this awful place possibly have a drive-able motorcycle? It's probably been broken for ages!” Fortunately, Jason discovered there was a key in the ignition. He tried to start the motorcycle, but sure enough it didn’t work. It had indeed broken down and been abandoned by its owner. Dylan laughed, showing the look of a man who knew everything, “What did I say? This is just a lump of scrap iron.” “No...” said Jason. Jason didn’t give up. He rummaged around among all the clutter for a while before he finally found an overturned toolbox in which there was a rusty wrench and a bent screwdriver. They didn't look likely to work. Jason didn’t bother to argue with Dylan about anything. He grabbed the tools and went back to the motorcycle to try and fix it silently. Zoe was somewhat curious, and came over to squat beside him, watching him dismantle and repair the motorcycle with great familiarity. “Do you know how to repair motorcycles?" “I learned how to before.” Jason was busy with the motorcycle for a long time before he had time to elaborate, “I've done all kinds of work to pay off my loans for college. Fixing vehicles is just one example.” “Oh? You're that awesome?” Zoe said, looking at him with obvious admiration. Jason’s heart beat fast as she watched him, but he knew that now was the wrong time to think about that kind of thing. “Can you do me a favor? Help me put pressure on this opening. Yes, right there.” It was a bit difficult for Jason to do such delicate work with only one hand, but luckily, he had Zoe to help him. Zoe was very clever and quick to react. Working together, the two of them quickly finished the repairs. Jason didn’t have much hope before trying to start the bike again, but he wasn’t in a bad mood about it. He and Zoe look at each other while smiling, feeling sympathy and pity for each other as they both tried to survive in this apocalyptic world. They felt like with each other's friendship, there was nothing to be afraid of, even if they ended up dying here. Jason took a deep breath, prepared himself, and turned the key. The motorcycle engine roared into life! He had really fixed it! Lily was so happy that she started to cheer, but Zoe quickly covered her mouth. "Shh, honey, don’t lead the zombies over here." Dylan and his two followers looked at each other. They hadn't expected the stupid boy to succeed, even though he looked like a hothead. He really stole the show. Jason looked very excited, but he began to worry after checking the fuel tank. “There's only a little bit of gas in the tank. I don’t know how long it can last.” Dylan came over and held the handlebars. Glancing at the body of the motorcycle, he said, “Hold on, little brother. Even if it was full of gas and you could drive it around, what do you intend to do? It doesn’t look like it can carry all six of us, does it? Do you want us to pile on top of each other? Or are you planning to drive away on your own? Seriously? Are you that cowardly you'd abandon all of your companions?” The meaning of Dylan's words was very obvious. He was worried that Jason would run away alone with the motorcycle. Jason looked at him and smiled leisurely, “Don’t worry, I won’t leave my companions behind. That'd be counterproductive. I'm afraid I can't survive in this world full of zombies all by myself. However, I will have to drive this motorcycle on my own.” Dylan’s eyes went wide, “What on earth are you talking about? Don’t keep us guessing!” Zoe was also a little puzzled, and asked, “What are you going to do?” Jason said to Zoe, “I'll distract the zombies with the motorcycle so you guys can get to the underground waterway.” “No!” Zoe immediately disagreed, “It’s too dangerous!” “Don't worry. I have a gun.” “But you're missing one arm. How can you drive while shooting?” “If I tie my broken arm to the motorcycle, I can control its direction. Don’t sweat it. I might look weak, but I’m a motorcycle veteran. If I was rich, I might've been in a motorcycle league.” Zoe rolled her eyes at him, “Are you seriously joking around at a time like this.” Jason was innocent, and wasn't joking around when he said he might've been in a motorcycle league. Zoe stared at him and asked in a questioning tone, “You want to distract the zombies all by yourself? Do you know how many zombies are out there? Do you think you can get back alive?” After Zoe said this, the bullet comments in Jason’s livestream buzzed with excitement again. [The girl has actually started to care for him. I'm hopeful!] [She looks so seductive when she's angry!] Jason shrugged and said, “I’m not sure if I’ll make it back alive, but I’ll try my best.” Zoe narrowed her eyes, trying to see through the man in front of her. “Have you always been so fond of being a hero?” Jason laughed noncommittally and changed the subject. “Miss Zoe, could you please tie my broken arm to the handlebars? Just like you did when you bandaged my wounds earlier. Thank you.” Zoe didn’t move. She didn’t think Jason had a duty to be a sitting duck to save others’ lives. If she helped him at this point, then she would be the most unwilling accomplice. Seeing Zoe not move for a long time, Dylan impatiently walked over and swiftly tied Jason’s arm tightly to the handlebars, and patted him on the back. “Good lad. You're much braver than I thought! Go ahead! I'm sure you can do it!” After that, Dylan turned his head around and yelled at Lily, “Hey, kid. I hope you’re telling the truth about there not being any zombies in the underground waterway, or else… I'll make you suffer!” Lily hugged the little dinosaur doll behind Zoe. She was a little scared and whispered in response, “There really aren't any… I really didn't see any zombies when I came!” Zoe and Jason believed Lily. Even for a heavily-armed adult, it wouldn't be easy to survive alone in such a horrible environment, let alone a weak little girl without her parents’ protection. She must have a place that she could hide. Jason told Zoe and the others that once he opened the door, he would head towards the block in the north, while the entrance to the underground waterway was in the south. “Whatever you hear, don’t turn around. Just silently run towards the underground waterway!” Jason said. Zoe wanted to say something, but Dylan had already walked over to the back door and was getting ready to open it. “Miss Zoe,” Jason said to her, “can you pass me that thing? I can’t get off of the bike now. I’m sorry if this makes you feel uncomfortable.” Zoe followed his gaze and looked at a certain place. She was a little confused, but he was a man of ideas and he must've had his reasons. Zoe wasn't afraid as she took something and handed it to him. “Thank you,” Jason said. “Can I borrow your dagger again? I’ll give it back to you in a minute.” Zoe gave him the dagger and saw him do something that was very strange. She frowned and covered Lily’s eyes. Dylan was used to watching scary things, but his eyelids still twitched as he saw what was happening. His followers retched behind him. [WTF!!!! This lad is tough!] [What the hell is he doing? How does he... could it...] [I already know what he's thinking! Remarkable! I’m getting excited!] Jason had prepared himself. He lifted up his g*n and winked at Dylan, beckoning him to open the door. Jason had been emboldened by the buff from the toolbox and his strange disease. However, he still felt nervous in the face of this life-and-death situation. Zoe gazed at him with two beautiful yet hesitant eyes, and sincerely urged him word by word, “Jason, you must come back alive. You must come back alive.” Her words quickly warmed his heart as he started the motorcycle. He said, “Don’t worry! I'll come back alive!” Dylan and the others helped Jason open the door, and he quickly drove out without hesitation. Zoe didn’t dawdle or waste his distraction. Quickly, she picked up Lily and ran out of the building. Dylan and the others followed behind them and rapidly ran towards the entrance of the waterway!
