Chapter 5

1960 Words
Jason didn't notice that the number of spectators joining his exclusive livestream was increasingly growing. When he shot the head off the nearest zombie and blood and flesh covered the screen, there had been over fifty spectators. The ones who'd just entered his livestream chatted with bullet comments as they usually did. [This newbie is no ordinary person.] [Yeah. He's level 0, and he doesn't have any points, which means he has no experience. He’s a total newbie. As soon as he arrived, he came up against a swarm of zombies in the terror theme, but he immediately killed them. He’s amazing.] [An ordinary person would've been scared to death.] [This guy has potential. I’ve followed him.] Some people praised Jason, but others did the opposite, as that was how the online world worked. There were always some objectors. [What is there to brag about? Wasn't the guy who entered the Alice in Wonderland task background and also caught our eyes also a newbie? The number of spectators watching his livestream peaked at 500 and we spoke very highly of him, but less than three hours later he died in the Mad Hatter. I think this newcomer is the same.] [The harder you work, the more distressing it is when you die. It’s a fixed rule.] Although it was Jason's livestream, Jason himself could not see the bullet comments. All he could see was the livestream popularity and bonus points that were constantly updated in the lower left corner of his vision. The bullet chat was limited to the app users who watched livestreams online. At that moment, Jason was fighting so energetically that he didn't even notice the number of spectators in the lower left corner of his vision. He could only see the zombies’ heads as he shot them off their shoulders. He had hardly been healthy since childhood, due to being weak inside his mother’s womb. No matter how hard he exercised like other people, he achieved less with more effort, while others achieved more with less effort. He often asked himself why others could grow tall and strong while he could not. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't make it. Why did he only have endless bad luck, and why was he always casually bullied by others? Jason had lost his parents, had lived alone in the world, and had suffered from a strange illness. For those reasons, his heart had long been dead. Unexpectedly, God had finally noticed him and shown him sympathy when his life had been drawing to a close. To be or not to be? This may be my last chance. One of the zombies nearby rushed over and tried to grip him by the neck. This was the most exciting moment of his life. Instead of ducking, he reached forward and grabbed the zombie by the wrist to halt its powerful lunge. The zombie he stopped tried to strangle him with its other hand, but Jason grabbed its other arm too. The zombie must have been over 6 feet tall before death, almost the same size as his uncle Andrew and Philip, the bully quarterback from the football team. Even its gray, bloodless face resembled theirs! The zombie opened its smelly mouth. Michael’s blood and torn flesh was still stuck to its teeth, as it had just finished gnawing at his body. He didn't know whether it was because it had just eaten human flesh and drank human blood, or whether it was because it had smelt a fresher human scent which had sent it berserk, but either way, the zombie was surprisingly strong. It produced a growling sound deep in its throat and appeared very agitated, like a hungry beast that had found some delicious food. But no matter how anxious and agitated it was, and even though it had shaken an eye out of its eye socket, it still failed to struggle away from Jason’s grip. For the first time in his life, Jason experienced the feeling of overpowering others. His blood boiled. Even though his face was red and the veins on his arm bulged due to his strong grip, he could not help but laugh. Suddenly, someone shouted behind him. “Look out!” Jason, who reveled in the feeling of dominating a fight, got a little carried away and forgot that he wasn't only fighting the zombie in front of him, and that he was in fact being surrounded by a swarm of zombies. Just then, two zombies sprang up from behind him, opened their mouths, and bit into his neck. He felt a shiver travel down his spine. He held onto the arms of the zombie in front of him with both hands. If he took one hand away, he would certainly be knocked to the ground with only one hand available! As a chill swept over his heart, a dagger flew through the air, piercing the neck of one of the zombies biting at him, and cutting its head clean off. The dagger then embedded itself in the other zombie’s temple. Rotten flesh and half-dried blood along with brain-like flesh dripped out of the b****y hole that the dagger had made. The zombie froze with its smelly mouth wide open. Jason looked back and found that it was Zoe! Zoe actually had weapons? Holding the dinosaur in one hand and Zoe’s left leg in the other, the little girl hid behind her in terror. A blue-and-white translucent light band ran down Zoe’s right leg, snugly clinging to her thigh. A leg bag that was just wide enough to hold daggers was hanging outside the light band. The leg bag was also translucent. The light bag was very familiar to Jason's, because it was identical to the g*n bag around his waist. Zoe had noticed Jason’s weapon before, but she didn’t know if hers would work as well as his. Desperate, she had no choice but to use it. Then, she witnessed the strange change the moment she'd thrown the dagger, which had only a translucent outline. The dagger changed from a virtual object with a single outline into a lethal object which continuously flashed. The moment that Jason and Zoe looked at each other, their eyes showed the same expression of disbelief and excitement. Although she had muddled through life with Michael and the others for several years, and had recently been cornered by the enemy, Zoe was more clear-headed than those fools, and had heeded the cues from the system. Michael, the bald man, had always been a moron with nothing but brute strength. He thought that with his physical strength he could ignore everything. He'd been in a lot of trouble in the past. If Zoe hadn't helped him and his partners as much as she had, they would've died ages ago. As soon as she entered this strange world, Zoe had sensed something was wrong and had been constantly observing her surroundings. Perhaps this wasn't a film set riddled with cheap tricks, but an incredibly weird and incomprehensible alternative reality. Fortunately, she had listened to the system and grabbed her toolbox. The toolbox with her name on it had assigned her a set of daggers which were strapped to her leg. Compared with Jason’s g*n, her daggers seemed a lot less lethal. Most of the time, various thermal weapons were used to effectively repel zombies in movies and TV shows. Her daggers were useless compared to them. However, it was still better to be armed than unarmed. She had subconsciously thrown the dagger in desperation when she had wanted to help Jason, and had been given no time to think about it. She couldn't believe it when an aiming cursor had appeared in her field of vision when her hand had touched the translucent blue-white light. Her breathing had quickened. She stared determinedly at the two zombies who were attacking Jason from behind, and made a decisive move in that critical moment, as if she'd been controlled by the dagger. As soon as the dagger was thrown, it was so powerful that it whistled through the air like a streak of black light. After killing the two zombies, Zoe was surprised to find another semi-translucent dagger automatically appear in her leg bag. After Zoe threw two more daggers to fend off another two zombies who were trying to attack Jason, two more daggers appeared in her leg bag, replenishing her ammo just in time. At the same time, Zoe noticed that there was a digital logo shaped like a dagger with the number “97” behind it just below her field of vision. Plus the three daggers she had just thrown, she had a hundred daggers in total. There was a limit on the number of daggers she could throw, which meant she couldn’t use them too casually. Zoe’s help gave Jason time to react. He shouted and tore off the zombie's two arms with all his strength. The upper body of the armless zombie fell toward Jason’s chest, biting right at it! Unfortunately, its mouth didn't end up on Jason’s chest, but something hard instead. Jason had jammed the stiff muzzle of his g*n into the zombie’s mouth, making it unable to close. Its mouth and teeth crunched against the muzzle. “Hasta la vista,” Jason said softly. “Even though you’re already dead.” With a loud bang, a bullet exploded in the zombie’s skull, nearly splitting its head in two in a b****y explosion. The zombie was completely defeated, lying limp on top of him. He pulled the g*n out of its mouth, and the zombies nearby rushed toward him again. He quickly got up off the ground. Even though he was covered in blood and his hair was soaked in sweat, his face remained excited. This was true power! This was the absolute overwhelming power he had longed for! “Madman. He’s actually laughing,” Zoe murmured with resignation. She shouted to Jason, “Come over here!” Zoe, who had run onto a slope not far away guarding the little girl, overlooked a distant block where zombies were filling the streets. More and more zombies were pouring in their direction. There were so many zombies that the two of them would not be able to destroy them with their g*n and daggers alone. Zoe couldn’t believe the boy was laughing under such circumstances! Hearing Zoe’s shout, Jason shot the zombie nearest to him in the head twice in a row, and then looked up at Zoe. As she looked at him, she saw him raise his g*n toward her. He pointed the muzzle at her. Zoe was shocked. “You...” A foul smell wafted from behind her and an inhuman and coarse breathing approached her ear! Zoe looked back in horror as the tip of her nose faced a zombie with only half of its face left. The zombie grabbed her shoulder and bit toward her neck! The little girl holding her thigh shrieked in fright. Zoe was so frightened that she froze for a moment. With a crisp sound of a gunshot, the other half of the zombie's head exploded right in front of Zoe. Zoe screamed, her eyes covered in blood! Before she could wipe away the blood with the back of her hand, Jason had already rushed over to her and tore open his shirt, the buttons popping off in all directions. She regained her sight after he wiped her eyes with the shirt. "Go!" Jason picked up the little girl with one hand and let her hug him as he shot and killed a zombie up ahead. Then, he held Zoe’s hand and ran quickly alongside her!
