ELEANOR’s POV,
I didn’t bother to keep looking for Jorge again, I had another lesson this morning and I was hoping to see him there. I also wanted to know what just happened but I didn’t want to bug him—not ever.
By the time I showered and got ready, I had five minutes to get to class. I have heard about Miss Gwendolyn and I genuinely did not want to start off on the wrong foot with her. She was the transformation teacher whom I will be meeting for the first time. Part of me was a bit nervous because this class required my wolf which I did not have.
If I had my way, I would have skipped this. I didn’t have the energy to announce how wolfless I was in front of everyone again.
By the time I got there, everyone was already seated and I could find my spot beside Kathy who kept a seat for me—a huge smile on her face as soon as she saw me.
“Why so late?” She asked, leaning towards me, “I woke up and didn’t see you,”
“I went to train,” I whispered back.
That was when the door pushed open and Mrs Gwendolyn walked in.
“Good morning class,” her voice rang out as her gaze settled on me for a moment, I knew that look in her eyes, “you are new.”
“Yes, ma’am” I answered, pulling my body off the chair, “my name is Eleanor,”
“I did not know that accept new students in the middle of the semester,”
I didn’t say anything, I just kept staring back at her.
“You know what this class entails right?”
“Yes ma,”
“Good. On a scale of one to ten, how well do you know the abilities of your wolf,”
“Ma’am—
“Today we are having group training, that’s why I am asking. Some of the participants get to be preys for the session. That's why I want to know the strength of your wolf”
A lump settled in the pit of my stomach—not again.
“Mrs Gwendolyn?” A familiar voice called out behind me and I turned. I didn’t see Xena when I walked in. That was when I saw she was also with Jorge and the rest. I could see a smirk tugging at the side of her lips. My gaze rested on Jorge for a brief moment. Here he was, seated like nothing else mattered and I was losing my mind over the fact that I may have done something to hurt him earlier.
“How about Eleanor being the prey for her group?” The sarcasm in her voice did not go unnoticed by me
The teacher’s voice cut through my train of thought, “Why?,”
Her eyes settled on me again. I could swear she wanted to say something to me, maybe ask why Xena would suggest that. She clearly had no idea what was going on.
Somehow I felt like my heart was about to be ripped out and squeezed into a ball. I didn’t plan on telling anyone else but I didn’t want to embarrass myself.
“Elea—-
“I do not have a wolf, ma.” I blurted, cutting her off almost immediately before she could call my full name. Her forehead creased into a tiny frown.
Gasps and hushed voices echoed in the room but I didn’t give heed to any of them—their opinions didn’t matter to me in any way.
“Yes,” I continued, pulling my body off the chair, “I do not,”
“What is a wolf-less person doing in the academy?” She asked, her eyebrows raised in a questionable manner, “why are you here if you do not have a wolf,”
Mrs Gwendolyn didn’t need to say much, I could see the disappointment in her face. I let out a sigh but I didn’t say anything.
“You see why I said she should be prey for her group, Mrs Gwen,” Kathy suggested again
“No,” Kathy blurted, “she can not be the prey, ma’am” she turned and rolled her eyes at Kathy for a brief second before returning her attention to me again.
“It’s fine,” I spoke out, even though I was really grateful for the fact that she tried to stand up for me, “it’s not a big deal”
I didn’t know why I felt like another hunt was about to take place the moment she put Corey in charge of the grouping. I knew he was up to no good and he would not hesitate to humiliate me.
Like I already knew, I ended up on Corey’s team. The smirk on his face said it all—he couldn’t wait to end me.
“An hour,” Mrs Gwendolyn called out again before her gaze settled on me again, “each group has an hour for everything. Try not to get killed, Eleanor”
I didn’t know if she meant it or was just too disappointed at the reveal of things”
In no time, we started. Corey and I were in the same group, Jorge and Xena were in another. I could swear everyone was anticipating what would come next.
“We will take a few minutes to warm up,” Corey’s voice pierced into the silent air, “and after that, Eleanor is prey for our group”
With that, he turned and walked away, smiling and saying something to himself.
From across the hall, Jorge was leaning against the wall, half his attention on me. One of his teammates was saying something to him but I saw as he excused himself and made his way towards me.
“I can speak to Mrs Gwendolyn,” he announced as soon as he came to a halt in front of me, “she could let you switch groups,”he further added
“It’s fine,” I answered with a shrug, “I don’t need to change groups just because someone is dealing with mummy issues,”
“Mummy issues?” He c****d an eyebrow at me and I gestured to Corey with my eyes.
“He definitely has one,” I said in a low voice, “or he won’t be coming for me like that”
Jorge chuckled lightly, the side of his face crinkling. I found myself smiling too. Even though I was under tension right there, that was a way his presence gave me some kind of peace. Part of me wanted to talk about what happened last time but I decided against it, maybe now was not the right time.
“Do not forget to use the strategies I taught you,” he advised after a few seconds, “it will help,”
“Will do”
“Hmm,” he nodded and for a split second, his gaze remained on me until he shrugged, “good luck Eleanor. I will be watching”
I nodded and he turned around before walking away. Somehow my determination spiked and I let out another sigh.
Today? I am not losing. I am not letting Corey get me. Even if I would not be using my wolf, I will not let him have the last laugh.
As the thought settled in, I finally grabbed my gloves from the table and began to wear them but the voices behind me stopped me right in the middle of what I was doing.
“Do you remember the last time Corey transformed?” One of the girls asked, “his wolf almost lynched someone to death,”
The other girl squealed excitedly, “that was the highlight for me and I cannot wait to see a replay of that,”
Both their heads turned towards me, a mocking expression on their faces.
“That student didn’t come back by the way,” one of them said, louder this time, “I hope you can cope, Eleanor. You are both in the same group,”
Before I could say anything, they chuckled and walked away but their words remained with me—Corey’s wolf almost killed a person last time. Suddenly, my gloves didn’t feel like the only protective gear I needed anymore.
