CHAPTER TEN

1354 Words
ELEANOR’s POV. “The starting gun goes in two minutes.” Mrs Gwendolyn’s voice rang out, pulling me out of my train of thought and I hastened towards the starting line even if my insides were churning. . In no time, I was also standing at my spot. This was me about to compete with all these people and their wolves. The fields will be littered with wolves and I—I would be the only person myself without a wolf. The thought made chills settle over me but I quickly shoved it off. It wasn’t my fault, I was not going to allow that to get to me. You can do this,” I muttered to myself again. Looking forward, I set my gaze and positioned my body—not today. Finally the sound of the gun and I sprinted off without thinking twice. I made for the highland in the terrain. I couldn’t wolf out but I sure knew how to use my legs, something I was grateful I kept consistent. Most wolves would not run towards the highlands when they were trying to transform so I would be able to put enough distance between me and them. The thought pushed more adrenaline through my veins and I pressed further. I kept running, howls reaching my ear. Most had transformed and their howls joined together sounded like a nightmare—a bit scary. But I didn’t falter. Stopping meant I was giving Corey power over me. He didn’t get his revenge the last time and today I bet he would not allow anything to get in the way of what he wanted. I was still running when I began to hear howls behind me. A wolf was coming and that too at a very fast speed. My heart skipped as I increased my pace. I didn’t need anyone to tell me who that was. He was coming for me and he was coming fast. I tried to turn but at that moment, something slammed me into a tree and I crashed against it, letting out a loud scream. My arm immediately became bruised but I didn’t have time to think about it. I immediately turned around and there I saw the red eyes glaring back at me. For a few seconds, I drank in the sight of the creature in front of me. I have not seen a wolf before and this—Corey was terrifying. His eyes were bloodshot, his huge frame towered above me like a death sentence. The only thing still keeping me standing on my feet was the fact that he was not fully transformed yet—he was still half Corey and half wolf. Before I could make another move, he grabbed me by the neck and slammed me against the tree again, stars exploded in my head instantly as more pain coursed through my entire body. He didn’t wait, he lifted me again and slammed me to the ground, I landed with a painful whimper. I tried pushing him off, using my legs to shove him aside. That gave me a bit of an edge as Corey stumbled a few feet away from me. I quickly stood up and made to run but he was fast, he grabbed me by the neck and slammed my back against the tree again. I immediately tasted blood in my mouth. “Let me go,” I managed to whisper, trying hard to undo his hand from my neck. “So weak,” he muttered, sarcasm emanating from him, “why didn’t you run fast enough?” The more he asked, the more his grip on me tightened. I would not be able to do anything if I tried, he was too strong for me. So I stayed still, waiting for an opportunity to escape. It was the only thing I could think of at the moment, how to get away from this situation. “I am going to make you pay for this,” I mumbled again as I allowed my long nails to dig into the flesh of his skin. He didn’t even flinch, the smirk on his face only widened with each passing second. “No one is coming to save you now, Eleanor,” he continued as he leaned closer. Our faces were only inches apart, my breathing was becoming too loud. It felt like the whole world had stopped and I was trapped right in the middle of it. “Beg for me to let you,” he snickered, slicing his claw over my shoulder. I cried out in pain as blood spilled out of it, “beg for it,” he ordered, doing the same thing again to my other hand. The pain intensified and the cruel smile on his lips grew. He could do something to me here and no one would be able to find me. Corey had this all planned from the beginning. I could see the excitement in his eyes, the joy he was feeling from hurting me. If Corey had his way, he would kill me and bury me right in this place—no one would stop him. I couldn’t imagine how someone could derive so much joy in hurting someone. The only thing I did was mistakenly pour food on his shoes—how did I become his object of revenge just for that? It made no sense no matter how much I thought about it. “Look at you,” he continued, his eyes twitching with excitement. He was clearly enjoying what was happening—he couldn’t even hide the glee of it. “You are in my hands finally,” he continued, “the last time Branko was able to save you but what about now? Who will come to save you now?” I clenched my jaw in anger, my eyes turning bloodshot. The urge to snap his head off his body gripped me but I kept calm—something I have learnt to do all these years—keeping calm. “Eleanor,” he called my name again, this time in a more lethal and icy manner, “today, I will make you pay for humiliating me in that kind of way” Before I could say anything, he let go of my neck and took a step away from me. The smirk on his face intensified. “Run,” he advised and my forehead creased into a tiny frown. “What— “Run, Eleanor,” he said again, cutting me off. I didn’t think, I just did. I didn’t know if he was trying to mess with me but I was not going to waste any of the opportunities. My legs moved swiftly, adrenaline pumped through my entire body. I couldn’t stop, not when I didn’t know what he had planned. Then it reached me, his mocking chuckles and the swiftness of his legs against the ground. Before I could fully comprehend what was happening, he slammed me against another tree and his face came into view again—Satisfaction brimming from his very existence “Let me go,” I managed to voice out again, struggling a little. It was futile against him but I couldn’t allow him to kill me off like that. I tried pushing him off but that made him only lean closer but in that moment, something happened—the same feeling again. Just as Corey pressed forward, his eyes changed to a color of silver in almost a second and a bolt of electricity ran through my body and almost immediately, his expression changed immediately and he shoved me off with so much energy. For a few seconds, his eyes returned to normal and he looked like he had just realized something while my mind wandered far. This was exactly the same thing that happened with Jorge. But I didn’t wait for him to go back to the beast he was and even though I would have loved to stay and ask what was happening, I pulled my wounded body off the ground and bolted.
