Yvonne appeared on my door with her forehead sweating. She looks like she has just been chased.
“Farah." Yvonne breathed out my name while she's still trying to catch her breath. “Are you alone right now?"
“Yes, I—"
She shortly glanced to her right and then to her left before grabbing my wrist and closing the door.
“W-What? Why?" I asked, confused.
Yvonne dragged me to the living room and finally turned her feet to face me.
“Farah,"
She took a deep breath before looking at me intensely in the eye. “Don't trust anyone"
“What do you mean?" Still perplexed.
I look away as I hear a knock again but this time I'm sure who's behind it.
Zeke.
She squeezed both my arms to get my attention back to her. "
“Don't ever forget that, Farah. Promise me! "
It's the first time I've seen Yvonne act this way. Her face was full of fear and other emotions I cannot explain very well.
“Yvonne, are you okay-"
“Promise me, Farah!"
“Yv—"
"Please!"
“O-Okay, I promise. I promise..." I replied rashly.
Now, I was truly worried about her. Not once did I see her like this before. I was about to open my mouth again when I heard Zeke swinging the door open.
He always had a spare key with him since we both lived in the same house.
Yvonne removed her hands from me and acted like nothing had happened as she made her way out the front door.
I called out to her, but she did not turn back and just left. She didn't even greet Zeke when they passed each other.
“What does she need?" Zeke leisurely asked while removing his jacket and hanging it.
“I don't know...I have no idea."
Yvonne's words seem to stay in my head bugging me throughout my dinner with Zeke. He kept trying to have conversations with me but most of the time, I wasn't able to focus on his words.
I finally made up my mind to ask him about her. He might know something about it.
Putting down the spoon and fork, I start to speak to the person in front of me. “Zeke, Is there something going on with Yvonne?"
“What do you mean?"
“It's just that she said something weird about me not to trust anyone."
I heard the noise from his utensils. “She said that?" He paused for a while before continuing to speak. “Raul."
“What about him?" I put my plate aside.
“He was punished today for something..." He began to move his spoon again, resuming to eat.
“He—What? What did you do to him?" I asked distressingly.
He swallowed the food down his throat before speaking. “Raul...killed some werewolves that belonged to SilverSteel."
“Wha—That can't be. Raul is not that kin—"
“I don't believe—." “It's true" Zeke interrupted.
“He wouldn't do something like that for no reason!" I stood up and slammed the table hard.
Silver Steel is known to be the strongest and most prosperous pack in this country.
If we were the pack that was hated and despised by other packs, they were treated the opposite.
Silver Steel was admired and looked up to. Because of that, they have vast connections and a huge military base.
Only a huge fool would try to go against them.
Of course, I hadn't thought of Raul that way. Not Raul. Not from my pack.
“They might have done something! " I protest.
“They did." He then looked me straight in the eye
“They were planning on removing us from the face of the earth."
That last statement just made my knees go weak but I keep myself steady by holding on to the table.
“This is what I've been worrying about for so long, Zeke. Stealing and attacking other packs has been going on for far too long. It was never about surviving, we were just delaying our deaths. Now, even silver steel wants our heads." I clutched my hands so hard that I didn't even feel my nails piercing through my skin.
I walked towards the front door when Zeke got up and grabbed my hand. “Where are you going?"
“What else? I'm informing the pack. We'll have to run and find another place to settle. When the time comes that we have enough manpower then we'll fight. But for now, I will not allow any deaths from this pack. I will protect them." I argued.
We might harmed other werewolves, but I always made sure that they would only fight if they needed to defend themselves and never resort to killing them.
It didn't cross my mind that Raul would break that oath. He was not that short-tempered and reckless.
It is impossible to negotiate anymore. We have killed one of theirs and there is no going back to that.
If bloodshed is inevitable in the future and the members of the pack refuse to fight, then I will respect their wishes and help them flee. But if they choose to fight alongside their luna, I'll keep evading death a thousand times until I've exhausted all.
“Now's not the time. We'll try to resolve it through peace talks. We will negotiate the punishment they'll be giving us and we will comply with it if it's beyond our ability."
“What If they don't want to?" I turn to face him.
“Then we'll see. It's not like they'll attack tomorrow. We still have enough time to prepare." He then embraced me and held my head against his chest.
“You never know...maybe tomorrow morning, everything will go back to the way it was before." His warm touch always calms me down. If only time would stop, I would very much like to stay like this.
Suddenly, something stirs within me
No.
“Wha—" I pulled away from Zeke, puzzled by the sudden voice in my head.
Is it just my imagination? or is it...
Are you...there?
I waited for some kind of response or anything at all but it seems like I just assumed that it was my wolf.
Zeke suggested that having a movie marathon is the way to liven up the mood. He prepared the snacks and opened the bottle of wine that we hadn't opened during dinner.
The movie was not that long but somehow, my eyes started to get heavy. I did not fight off the sleepiness and dozed off beside Zeke.
Before I completely lost consciousness, I recall Yvonne's words.
Don't trust anyone.
