Chapter Ten

We were already lying in a different room when I woke up the next morning. Long gone were the hard, grubby floor and the metal bars that kept us confined. We are in a peculiar grand bedroom that is covered by red ceramic tiles and smooth, crepe-colored walls. It seemed to be brighter and well-lit because there were small, rectangular windows present. It was not too big to let a person go through, but even if it was, soldiers were everywhere. While looking outside, my eyes keep on focusing on the big metallic gate that leads outside towards the town. Though I hadn’t seen that gateway before, it was strangely familiar. Even being high up here and staring at the view, I can tell that I have been in a similar place before. A rustling sound that was coming from the bed caught my attention. June, who had just woken up, was softly rubbing his eyes. Even though he was still half-asleep, he still wanted to observe around first, clearly looking around for me. I walked to him and sat on the bed. “Are you looking for me?” He nodded repeatedly. I rubbed the back of his head, “You know, I won’t go anywhere. Not without you…” He nodded and proceeded to lie on my lap. Caressing his hair softly, I started to recover some details from before we got here last night. I have this fuzzy memory of being carried by someone. During that time, I tried to talk or move, but I had lost all the strength in my body. I'd only realized just now that they might have drugged us while we were still sleeping. What are they trying to pull this time? Not even a few minutes later, June fell asleep again. I smiled every time he made that cute little snort of his. I'm relieved he's not having any nightmares yet, and I hope he doesn’t. I shouldn't wake him up. Slowly moving his body to the soft foam, I discreetly pulled my arm out and lay him down on the bed completely. "Looks like it's been healed." I muffled when I no longer felt any discomfort in my wrist. I then stood next to June to tuck him in and tiptoed close to the door listening to anyone or anything from behind it. Murmurs were then heard from the other side, who I'm expecting are soldiers guarding our room. There should be two of them there. As days went by, I noticed that the only one who could go in and out of the room was random personnel who were in charge of bringing us food. They're a fool if they think I wouldn't know the food they were serving is more than what meets the eye. Poison in the morning, then an antidote and sleeping pills in the evening. It is not something that can kill you, but it can cause muscle weakness. That is what they were after, so we won't have any strength to escape or hurt someone. They are stupid enough not to know that nomad rouges have plenty of ideas on what different herbs can do. What's worse is they're giving poison to someone already immune to it. I've handled many types of poison back in the day and tried it myself several times already. It was the only way to get to know the potency and how lethal it is. It was one of the things that grabbed my interest growing up, and it made me feel useful in the pack. I’ve pocketed a sufficient amount of poison and antidote by keeping them hidden inside my mouth every time she waited for us to chew and swallow the food. What they do not know is that a higher dosage of antidote mixed with the same amount of poison will become a new kind of poison. I used a splint of wood from the bed as needles to where it would be dipped into the new mixture. Other than that servant, I also have to give it to June. I can't let him be involved. This is the only thing I can do for Yvonne. Just as I planned, the moment she put the food down on the table. I pricked her with the needle, then did the same to June. They were frozen in place, seemingly awake, but unconscious inside. It'll wear off for some time, but it can also be triggered by any strong smell of smoke, a loud noise, or when they have been excessively moved by someone. As long as their senses are affected that much, they will wake up. Then, I carefully exchanged my clothes with hers and wore them, disguising myself as a servant. The guards didn't even notice when I passed through them. I don't match her height or her hair color, but because a different maid was assigned to deliver the food each time. They hardly notice any difference. I carefully roamed the halls looking for the alpha's office. If I want to go against them, then I need to know first who and what I'm dealing with. Before I could continue my excursion, I heard a few upcoming footsteps. It stopped me in my tracks and when I tried to go back, the same thing happened. I was trapped in the corridor with only a door behind me. "Ugh, screw it!" I immediately swung the door open and carefully made my way inside the room, shutting it closed. Worried that someone might’ve been inside, I immediately observed the room. I scanned the area from the pieces of furniture around to any sign of life that was breathing or hiding within those walls. The room was fancy but not as big as the room we were held captive before. Nonetheless, it was spotless and more obviously clean nook to nook. Stepping onto the polished, green marble surface, I wandered around. Satisfied with my observation, I turned my heel to go back. But before I could do so, I accidentally stumbled, not noticing the taller height of the floor from behind me, and accidentally landed on a bed. I could hear a painful growl when half of my body dove at something hard instead of the soft foam. When the blanket was shoved to the side, it revealed another person. My eyes widened at the sight of the guy who was still in dreamland. Before he could open his eyes completely, I covered them and his mouth, then pushed him back to the bed with me on top of him. He was very persistent, and I kept telling him to keep quiet and stay put while trying to listen to any kind of sounds coming out from behind the door. I continue to hope that no one heard any of that before. Once I knew the coast was clear, I went back to confront the man. That’s when I discovered that he was probably the one who got distracted when the beautiful doll-like woman introduced me to him and the other betas. “Listen, I just went out to get some air" —More like gathering info about this pack “I don't want to hurt you or anyone." If you're one of those responsible, then I might. “As long as you don't make any noise, I will be gone right away. Do you understand?" Although it took a few seconds, he still accepted my deal. Then, I felt his lips moving from under my palm, so I slowly uncovered his mouth to hear it properly. “I know who you are, you don’t need to cover your eyes. I heard that voice back at Jace’s office…” I slowly removed my other hand too. “Remember, our deal... Don’t make any sudden movement or sound.” After waiting for any actions he was going to take, I was surprised that he just burst out laughing. “I can't believe I was just pinned down by a girl." He kept making a loud noise and my eyes kept moving at the door and back to him. I was worried that someone might come and open it, alarmed by this beta's voice. What do I do if they see me? I can't back down now. It took me days to plan this. I won't allow this little mishap to stop it. I grabbed a needle from my pocket, ready to add another person paralyzed. He barely caught my hand before I could do anything. “What's this?" I tried to do it again but this time, he got a hold of it. “Give it back." “Explain." “That's nothing." “If it was, you shouldn't have attacked me with this." I ignored him, gathering my thoughts as to how I could escape this situation. “Then I have no choice but to let you try it." Creasing my forehead, I continue to be silent. Still, the sharp end of the needle was coming closer and closer to me. Gritting my teeth, I finally admitted what it was. “It’s poison…” It's better not to show him the effects. I wouldn't want to give such valuable information to the likes of them. I grabbed it back when I noticed he loosened his grip. “Now, that's not what you should do to people who keep secrets for you, people you try to kill, and people you can trust." “When did–What do you mea—” “—For example." He stands abruptly, making me wary and confused. But instead of coming towards me, he moved backward. He leaned his body against a wall. “This?" And just like that, an ulterior door opened, revealing a dark alley. “And also about the whole escaping thing." He smiled. I was dumbfounded for a while before wearing an uninterested look on my face. “No thanks. I don't need it." Like I would even trust anyone that belongs to this pack. “You sure?" I turned my back and walked towards the door. “You'll be found out. Better use the alley." Jackson hurriedly appeared in front of me. I shoved him to the side and reached out for the doorknob. “Have your way. Just so you know, there will be no more rooms up ahead for you to pin someone down." “I could go back then find another way." Slightly turning the handle, the door started to open. “Good luck starting at square one then…If they notice, you will be more heavily guarded than before." I took two deep breaths before I pushed the door back and removed my hand on the knob. I hate to admit it but he's right. I would be going in circles in this unfamiliar place. One way or another I would still get caught. I turned around to see if he was lying or if the passageway was a trap. “It's not a trap. " Seeing how the words in my mind were written all over my face “And why would I believe you?" “Well, the only ones who know this alley are only Silver Steel’s family of alphas. So if they are gonna pinpoint somebody, then it's going to be me. I'm the leader's brother and his only family. You go down, I go down." What do I do? If I decide to go outside, then there is no guarantee that I'll never run into soldiers or betas, but if I take this man's offer, then it will either be death or salvation waiting for me. I'm already running out of time. I have to get back as soon as possible to avoid suspicions. I made my way inside the passage door, watching my steps cautiously as I turned to face him. “Just so you know this is not a debt and I won’t bother owing you one.” He just shrugged. “Just so you know, I am not hurting anyone. Just yet.” “I think you’re the one who needs to watch out more.” I rolled my eyes at the same time I turned my back on him “Anyway, I still don't trust you, but I have to make use of anything I have right now. " Jackson murmured something under his breath when I was at the end of my sentence. I brushed it off since I didn't hear it completely and just went on my way.
